Living on a planet where any government is allowed to go through with military action that they know will result in the death of civilians should be gut-wrenchingly painful for all of us. Over 10,000 children have died in Palestine since October 7th, and there is not a single child in Gaza who is not suffering. CHILDREN. INFANTS. I can't stop thinking about all the innocent children we are losing and leaving to suffer every day.

Please use whatever privilege you have to do whatever you can during the Global Strike for Palestine (January 21st - 28th). Contact your representatives. Call for an immediate ceasefire. Boycott, stimulate the economy as minimally as possible, participate in pro-Palestinian protests, educate yourself, and most importantly, amplify the voices of Palestinians.

A few ways you can donate to/support people in Palestine:

Ghada here has informed me that she will be attempting to travel to a safer area, away from Rafah. She won't have stable Internet and cannot regularly make posts to remind people of her fundraiser. Please do consider donating. The situation in Rafah is unbelievable.

The team describe how, while tracking a male Sumatran orangutan called Rakus, they noticed he had a fresh facial wound – probably the result of a scrap with another male. Three days later, Rakus was seen feeding on the stem and leaves of Fibraurea tinctoria – a type of liana climbing vine.

Then he did something unexpected.

“Thirteen minutes after Rakus had started feeding on the liana, he began chewing the leaves without swallowing them and using his fingers to apply the plant juice from his mouth directly on to his facial wound,” the researchers write.

Not only did Rakus repeat the actions, but shortly afterwards he smeared the entire wound with the chewed leaves until it was fully covered. Five days later the facial wound was closed, while within a few weeks it had healed, leaving only a small scar.

The team say the plant used by Rakus is known to contain substances with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antioxidant, pain-killing and anticarcinogenic properties, among other attributes, while this and related liana species are used in traditional medicine “to treat various diseases, such as dysentery, diabetes and malaria”.

It remains unclear whether Rakus figured the process out for himself or learned it from another orangutan, although it has not been seen in any other individual.

Schuppli added that Rakus appeared to have used the plant intentionally.

“It shows that he, to some extent, has the cognitive capacities that he needs to treat the wound with some medically active plants,” she said. “But we really don’t know how much he understands.”

If anyone is interested, please feel free to light a digital candle through Illuminate. I got a name a few years back, and it's a name I won't forget. May every name we have found be a blessing. May their names never be forgotten. May we never forget.

Never again means now.

I lit a candle for Ella Weiss Z”L . We don’t know where she was born or where she lived, only that she was about 70 when she died.

“Dogs don’t know what they look like. Dogs don’t even know what size they are. No doubt it’s our fault, for breeding them into such weird shapes and sizes. My brother’s dachshund, standing tall at eight inches, would attack a Great Dane in the full conviction that she could tear it apart. When a little dog is assaulting its ankles the big dog often stands there looking confused — “Should I eat it? Will it eat me? I am bigger than it, aren’t I?” But then the Great Dane will come and try to sit in your lap and mash you flat, under the impression that it is a Peke-a-poo… Cats know exactly where they begin and end. When they walk slowly out the door that you are holding open for them, and pause, leaving their tail just an inch or two inside the door, they know it. They know you have to keep holding the door open. That is why their tail is there. It is a cat’s way of maintaining a relationship. Housecats know that they are small, and that it matters. When a cat meets a threatening dog and can’t make either a horizontal or a vertical escape, it’ll suddenly triple its size, inflating itself into a sort of weird fur blowfish, and it may work, because the dog gets confused again — “I thought that was a cat. Aren’t I bigger than cats? Will it eat me?” … A lot of us humans are like dogs: we really don’t know what size we are, how we’re shaped, what we look like. The most extreme example of this ignorance must be the people who design the seats on airplanes. At the other extreme, the people who have the most accurate, vivid sense of their own appearance may be dancers. What dancers look like is, after all, what they do.”

Hala Consulting and Tourism Services, a firm owned by Sinai tribal leader and business tycoon Ibrahim al-Organi, has been charging Palestinians crossing from Gaza's Rafah to Egypt at least $5,000 per adult and $2,500 for children under 16.
It has a monopoly on providing transfer services at the Rafah crossing, the only Gaza exit not bordered with Israel and the single route out of the coastal enclave for Palestinians.
In the past three months alone, the company is estimated to have made a minimum of $118m, or 5.6 billion Egyptian pounds, from desperate Palestinians trying to leave war-torn Gaza.
Prior to the war, Hala charged everyone exiting Gaza via the Rafah crossing $350 per person, but the price has increased 14-fold for Palestinians.

We knew this all along but this surely puts things in perspective. But just how despicable do you have to be to profit off of people fleeing genocide? Absolutely disgusting and I hope this firm burns to the ground along with its owner.

free online james baldwin stories, essays, videos, and other resources

**edit

James baldwin online archive with his articles and photo archives.

---NOVELS---

Giovanni's room"When David meets the sensual Giovanni in a bohemian bar, he is swept into a passionate love affair. But his girlfriend's return to Paris destroys everything. Unable to admit to the truth, David pretends the liaison never happened - while Giovanni's life descends into tragedy. This book introduces love's fascinating possibilities and extremities."

Go Tell It On The Mountain"(...)Baldwin's first major work, a semi-autobiographical novel that has established itself as an American classic. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle of self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves."

+bonus: film adaptation on youtube. (if you’re a giancarlo esposito fan, you’ll be delighted to see him in an early preacher role)

Another Country and Going to Meet the Man Another country: "James Baldwin's masterly story of desire, hatred and violence opens with the unforgettable character of Rufus Scott, a scavenging Harlem jazz musician adrift in New York. Self-destructive, bad and brilliant, he draws us into a Bohemian underworld pulsing with heat, music and sex, where desperate and dangerous characters betray, love and test each other to the limit." Going to meet the Man: " collection of eight short stories by American writer James Baldwin. The book, dedicated "for Beauford Delaney", covers many topics related to anti-Black racism in American society, as well as African-American–Jewish relations, childhood, the creative process, criminal justice, drug addiction, family relationships, jazz, lynching, sexuality, and white supremacy."

Just Above My Head"Here, in a monumental saga of love and rage, Baldwin goes back to Harlem, to the church of his groundbreaking novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, to the homosexual passion of Giovanni's Room, and to the political fire that enflames his nonfiction work. Here, too, the story of gospel singer Arthur Hall and his family becomes both a journey into another country of the soul and senses--and a living contemporary history of black struggle in this land."

If Beale Street Could Talk"Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin's story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions-affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche."

also has a film adaptation by moonlight's barry jenkins

Tell Me How Long the Train's been gone At the height of his theatrical career, the actor Leo Proudhammer is nearly felled by a heart attack. As he hovers between life and death, Baldwin shows the choices that have made him enviably famous and terrifyingly vulnerable. For between Leo's childhood on the streets of Harlem and his arrival into the intoxicating world of the theater lies a wilderness of desire and loss, shame and rage. An adored older brother vanishes into prison. There are love affairs with a white woman and a younger black man, each of whom will make irresistible claims on Leo's loyalty.

---ESSAYS---

if you as a tme trans person are following a trans girl to slobber over her horny content but you start bitching at her any time she expresses even the most basic transfeminist beliefs or frustration with transmisogyny then like. how in your head are you separating yourself from the cishet guys who want women to shut up so they can beat off to them. do you genuinely think having a pussy absolves you of any potential proximity to misogyny

thinking about the gods of the silt verses and how you never really get a sense of benevolence, malice, or even recognisable intent from them. they straddle this liminal space between bestial and sentient, and simultaneously exist outside it completely. their relationship with humanity feels like this sort of mutual parasitism (if such a thing can even be said to be possible); "a god must feed" seems an immutable truth, but the answering insistence that "a god must be fed" is an extrapolation, a justification. an excuse. the gods are hungry because we keep shoveling more fuel into their gaping maws. they've grown swollen on sacrifices, habituated to easy meals. they reflect the sickness at the heart of society inasmuch as they embody it. the snake has begun to choke on its own tail, but it still keeps greedily swallowing. we keep excavating deeper even as the walls begin to collapse inwards upon our heads. the water recedes a little further with each tidal wave that crashes upon the shore. we plunge our hands further into the beast's maw and pull up less each time, but the risks of it closing those jaws around us remain the same. what a fantastic fucking metaphorical device.

every day Israel is committing atrocities I don't think it's reasonable to argue that these are being timed to coincide with US media events in order to distract people you can say they did this during the super bowl and that during the met gala but they have been doing the same thing every other day they don't need to time it with a distraction bc unfortunately the vast majority of americans are not paying any attention anyways

its so disturbing how many people get appendectomies when there's no evidence that it even helps with appendicitis :/ hm? oh? no i know about that but it wasn't double blind so it doesn't count. you know. one of those double blind appendectomy studies where we give people with appendicitis a placebo appendectomy and the doctors doing it also don't know if they've actually removed the appendix or not at the end of the procedure. yeah nobody's done one of those so the evidence doesn't count and if looks like there's just no evidence for appendectomies :/ and some of the people getting them might be autistic so idk if they can really consent to having their body permanently altered... but of course you can't talk about any of this because of Woke nowadays...

The Cass report is exactly why science education needs to focus way more on experimental design throughout science curriculums.

you know other people have probably articulated this better than i can, but honestly, on some level, transphobes don't actually see gender as something that is biological and innate, and they do have a concept of people who are outside of the gender binary - they just don't see that as a valid identity, but as a punishment. in their eyes, you can fail at being a man or a woman, and you can fail so badly that you are not seen as any gender at all, but you are not allowed to claim this as an actual identity, you are not allowed to intentionally express yourself that way, you are not allowed to enjoy it. gender is something that is given to you and taken from you, and you're not supposed to have any choice in the matter. your options are supposed to be to conform, or to be dehumanized. they don't want you to be able to choose anything else.
