thts why i always get so uncomfortable whenever i see all those “mitski embodies my depression” posts because (a) they r incredibly stupid and (b) they perpetuate this idea that artists are not people, but merely extensions of ourselves. 

its frustrating to see most of the praise being thrown at artists be about the feelings of sadness they can create in you, because that kind of praise is ultimately empty and self serving. i feel like people are almost bragging about their emotional acuity or some bullshit, like i get it! i get it, you’re sad. listening to mitski makes you cry, but that doesn’t tell me anything about you, or about your relationship to her music, or about her music itself. it just tells me that you’re sensitive and want everyone to know about it.
