I think that there’s some kind of mindset in a lot of creative communities (authors, artists, musicians) that your work needs to be groundbreaking and thought-provoking for it to matter. That in order for it to be considered worthy of its medium, it must have a greater purpose.

And if you ask me, its bullshit.

God, it puts so much stress on a creator to have to be important to someone else. I have seen so many people give up because their work isn’t making a statement, that it’s ‘fluff but no substance.’ As though there’s only room for so many people in a community of creators that only people with a point can get in.

If it made someone laugh, it’s important.

If it made someone smile, it’s important.

If someone looks back on it fondly, even for a moment, it’s important.

If you enjoyed making it, even if you never shared it, it’s important.

Sing songs about your cat, draw pictures of lizards eating popsicles, and write a series of novels about time-traveling alpaca.

The world is already full of super-important stuff. Write fluff.

Something that warms my heart is thinking about how Danvas is both the goof and the softie in their relationship and about how they argue every time he throws an “i love you” at Athena because she can’t and won’t say it back for a few months into their relationship and he can’t accept not being loved in return. In her mind, his feelings sound so superficial she doesn’t bother reciprocating them.

I like thinking about how there’s this uncanny level of disconnection in every stage of their relationship until they *get* it. After a big fight, they slowly realize they have had the hardest time understanding each other and both go "oooooooh" under the realization that they made their lives miserable and invalidated each other for about four years. At times they made fun of how opposite they were, but mostly they were both spiraling into a crisis they couldn’t put into words because they felt misunderstood. Anyway, Danvas is a softie at first but he slowly goes back to his real, rougher self. I had never put this into words and it kind of hurts, tbh.

Do they break up after realizing? Do they continue to be together? Stay tuned! I don’t know what I should do yet!

People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought I’d get right to the heart of the matter

This is 1000% more motivating than every preachy “real writers write every day” post on all of Tumblr.

Always gotta reblog the Two Cake Theory

Also, have a sketch I liked. On Instagram I always make their interactions seem soft, but when their relationship is tumbling down, all their physical contact seems a bit harsher than it should be, a bit angry, even if it’s just holding hands or kissing or touching each other’s face. It shows very slightly, so much so that even they fail to notice there’s something quite off about the way they hold each other.

You need a rest. You need empty moments in which you tolerate your anxiety and circling thoughts until they slow down and stop circling. You need slow, quiet activities that ground you and remind you to accept yourself in spite of huge obstacles and bad thoughts. You need to put solutions out of your mind for now, and engage in activities that have nothing to do with your ego. You need habits that strengthen your patience and focus, but also feel real and not arbitrary. You need to abandon your glorious future and build your imperfect present instead.

First kid I’ve drawn in my life, and of course it had to be her

Second kid and it’s Martin because I can and I Have To

Her name is Athena and I’m thinking she should not be from the states. She should totally absolutely have Latino roots. A Latin American mom married to some guy from the Netherlands. They make a big company and establish themselves at the states when Athena is young. She was a lonely kid with an accent and is a lonely adult, albeit full of knowledge, when she realizes she’s spending every single day sleeping after work at 28 because there’s nothing more interesting she could do.

Athena can’t find the motivation to turn around her perfectly planned life— she doesn’t know how to.

His name is Martin Danvas. Martin, his mom chose for him. Danvas, he gave the wizard he played as in dungeons and dragons as a kid. He introduces himself as such at one point, completely ignoring the fact that it’s a made up name. All his friends call him that. He seems like he doesn’t care.

They wake up with cramped necks. He can’t feel his left arm. Her legs are long lost, they hurt too much to be considered alive and well. He can’t unfold his foot to save his life. It’s stuck in that position from the amount of hours he spent sitting like that. His toe is cold. Very cold. It’s okay.
