Thinking about River affectionately calling the Doctor her “madman in a box” only after he's called her his “bespoke psychopath,” and vice versa. They each were called these words by the other before ever using them to describe the other.

Thinking about the way they defy reality for each other. How modern psychiatry elevates objective reality to gatekeep full participation in society, yet they shatter objective reality with love — “I can’t let you die without knowing that you are loved.” and “You are always here to me and I always listen and I can always see you.”

Thinking about “What's the mad fool talking about now?” and how Gallifrey ostracizes those labelled mad, going so far as to see it as failure in children. Thinking about “A child is not a weapon!” “Give us time.” and how Kovarian equates psychopath with weapon as a tool of dehumanization and control.

Thinking about the way the psychiatric-industrial complex inflicts violence upon those who deviate from psychosocial norms. How their relationship was born in violence, but of madness — not madness in a post-Enlightenment framework of opposition to Reason, but madness as radical compassion that doesn’t demand so-called rationality — “Every time you've asked, I have been there.”

Thinking about how neither of them chose “psychopath” or “madman,” but they both own those words as instruments in their own agency.

Having a Doctor who loves to get dressed up for different occasions is just making me think about him specifically getting dressed to match whatever energy River is giving.

the fact that duggan during the fall of x CONSISTENTLY has Orchis identify krakoa as an ethno-state as part of their scaremongering... well that feels bad lmao!

like its only the Evil Genocidal people that want to Kill All Mutants that (correctly, i might add) identify krakoa as an ethnostate. wonder why that is 🤔🤔🤔

krakoa is a country where citizenship is defined by belonging to a certain racial/ethnic in-group (mutants); anyone not belonging to that racial/ethnic in-group (non-mutants) must acquire a form of special dispensation to live in that country-- this dispensation (an appeal to the quiet council, the unelected governing body) can only be acquired if a relative, spouse, or other loved one DOES belong to the racial/ethnic in-group. furthermore, this appeals process is informal, and is only seen to be enacted by a further privileged in-group who already know members of the quiet council.

furthermore, non-mutants living on krakoa are not privy to the same rights as mutants-- non-mutants are not normally given access to resurrection, and they do not have the same freedom of travel as mutants, because they cannot use the Krakoan gates, and other forms of travel (boats) are tightly controlled.

krakoa is, by definition, an ethnostate.

additionally, as Duggan writes it, the only people that have a problem with Krakoa are

  1. non-mutants that want to kill all mutants
  2. mutants who reject their status as mutants and collaborate with the humans that want to kill all mutants

there are multiple people in each group who are actual Nazis as well.

so, in short, you have:

  • a country that is by definition an ethnostate
  • the only people identifying it as an ethnostate are literal Nazis and "self-hating" mutants hellbent on wiping out mutants
  • the identification of Krakoa as an ethnostate is framed as being anti-mutant propaganda meant to stir up anti-mutant sentiment
  • the narrative puts forth the idea that if Krakoa does not exist, then there is nowhere on earth that mutants are safe

taken altogether, there are certain concerning real-life parallels to be made here (namely to "Israel" -- this is made worse by the fact that 2/3s of the founders of Krakoa have been presented as at the very least Zionist sympathizers, seeing as Xavier and Magneto met when they were both living in "Israel" in the years following the Nakba).

im not the first person to make these connections-- i think @brw has some posts and an essay going around from a few weeks back pointing this out-- but also, Duggan himself draws parallels between Krakoa and "Israel", in this exchange between Kitty Pryde and her rabbi from X-Men #25

"[...] but if the mutants of the world wish to come together and form a state, it would be hypocritical of us to stand in the way of that."

i dont know i dont really have a conclusion here i just like . wanted to lay all that out.

Amy grew up going to four psychiatrists, biting each of them. Being the strange girl imagining the strange Doctor.

Imagine what the others in her little town must think:

She must have been seeing things. Why is she so obsessed? What is wrong with her, little Amelia Pond, that she went to 4 psychiatrists and couldn't come out normal the other side?

And then there's River, who introduces her new face to the Doctor as a "psychopath". A non-medical term. A demonization of an idea. Who called her that first? Herself? Her "mother"? Some other person seeing her in her many lives?

Amy isn't high in empathy as it is. River would inherit that. Of course her "mother" moulded that into a shape convenient for her. A weapon shouldn't feel. A weapon shouldn't care. Taught not to feel sympathy.

And the Doctor at the heart of it all. The Doctor, who Amelia Pond met and befriended. Who left her. Who she never got over, who she drew and carved and told her friends about.

Who she told Mels about.

And little Melody, who was born to kill him, born to be a weapon... and who was told about him. His wonderful adventures. His blue box. The wonderful man that she and her mother stare at the sky and wish would come and save them. Hold them in his arms.

Something about How the Doctor ruins lives.

Something about how River inherits him from Amy.

Otherwise there's: Eleven goes through a mental health crisis that results in River putting him in Space Therapy.

(The location had once treated another Time Lord, a long time ago. Very few places could claim that without also being... well, prison planets.)

(The Time Lord was Koschei. It didn't work out.)

#I see my dreams reflected in this post#eleven refusing to talk to river when she comes to nab him out. that lasts all of five minutes.#he's abandoned her in a hospital too after all! right after she gave her lives to him :)#assuming “nabbing” him out implies its involuntary psychiatric hold of some sort and not *just* space therapy.#which I do see River doing out of desperation- because eleven is allergic to any coping mechanism but avoidance#she would be conflicted- but she would do it. no one ever said they were a healthy couple 😭#would he say that she —of all people— should know the value of autonomy? (yeah I think he would stoop to it) (and feel guilty)#but- he was SCARED. he NEEDED her most. in the TARDIS! and she brought him to a HOSPITAL.#yeah. but SHE was scared too! for him! maybe- they should talk about it now. so she knows a better plan next time it gets so bad. maybe?#....and he thinks of Koschei. he thinks of when Koschei stopped talking to him. so he says okay. and he talks to river#mmkay I have a fic in my drafts that this makes me think of a lot- its not posted and its messy and it doesn't matter at all except#what matters omg this post makes me feel seen#(I’m sure it’s very different. mine is also post-tAtM so Amy doesn’t get a say. she WOULD be SO disappointed in River.)#(and its the sisters of the infinite schism hospital from LKH and the Koschei thing is only an implied throwaway- sadly)#(im not tryna be diverting mentioning my random draft just tryna say wow someone who sees them the same way as me ima CRY)#OP if you write this. I would read the shit out of it.#I would adore it so much. I adore your interpretations. Rory *would* give his daughter the thumbs up.#also that ending tag 😭 I personally headcanon koschei killed themself within a couple years of the untempered schism#I also headcanon incidentally that academy-era koschei was mostly a she. we have no evidence that she wasn’t#eleventh doctor#river song#Amy pond#Rory williams#koschei#the master#(eleventh) doctor is neurodivergent tag#psychiatric hospital

Sorry about grabbing your tags, but yes!! Yes you get it.

Involuntary psych hold because River knows the Doctor wouldn't stay, would spend a day or two to try and convince that he's fine, but... he needs to run. He needs to be in as many places as he can, and staying there would be so boring--

So she does what she has to do. Even if she hates it. Even if he hates it. Even if she couldn't stomach it happening to her. Because she will get him out, when he's ready. Of course she will. He won't leave him there for them to decide.

She can't trust them to know. She can barely trust them enough to leave him there. But she doesn't feel like she has any other choice.

I also headcanon Koschei killed himself at some point in the academy. In the au where this happens, its after he tries and fails to seek help. But in au's where he doesn't...

I like to think Koschei and Theta were roommates at the academy, evidence or not. So one day, Koschei goes missing, skips school without Theta. Strange, but it happens. Maybe Theta's jealous. The Doctor has quite the jealous streak.

But when Koschei comes back...

He's changed, physically, and to some extent mentally, but he still has that same look in his eye. The same sort of crazed stare he's had since the day Theta met him.

Because the drums didn't leave. Nothing changed. He blew a regeneration and no one will help him.

(And Ten says the drums are all in his head, that they know they are. Which means he knew. Which means Koschei told him. Which means he didn't believe him, and he didn't help, and he didn't care to look, because Ten heard them. When they touched minds.)

(Maybe Koschei didn't want him in his head. Maybe he put up walls. But that isn't what it feels like to him. It feels like he was left behind.)

(And then he was.)

Don’t apologize :’) I love hearing more about this. Oh my god.

About her rationale that she isn’t giving his autonomy away — that she won't put him through that dread of helplessness deep inside her — her compromise to stay in control, because as he runs from place to place, she sees him running to death before her eyes.

Oh my heart.

My heart. Yes. Thank you for placing that painful moment in my mind </3

That after having tried everything, anything Koschei interprets as dismissiveness from Theta would be the last straw.

(but might I add)

(The mysterious character in DotD novelization who is definitely the Rani saying “we’ve been psychically linked all our lives,” makes me think the Deca all had some kind of psychic link — and the Drums couldn't be heard through it. Which leads to one of two conclusions: they really were louder after the Cult of Saxon botched resurrection, or the Tensimm mind link in that moment was more intimate than any they'd had before. The Master was so desperate.)

(With either conclusion — to Theta, what would looking deeper prove? Koschei has already hurt himself over this, what if humoring him makes it worse?)

(To Koschei, who is asking for help, how could this not be a rejection?)

The fact that the Master never spoke about the Drums until after the Time War — that the Doctor never talked about it either until Yana brought it up first — they knew it had become an off-limits topic.

Will it ever stop feeling raw…?

I spend a lotta brainspace on how the Eleventh Doctor's implied psychosis was later confirmed in The Day of the Doctor novelization, but much needed shoutout about Osgood's OCD in the same book! The throwaway mention in Death in Heaven deserved exploration and The Day of the Doctor novelization (the chapters from Human Osgood and Zygon Osgood's POVs) provides. Dearest Petronella.

#Petronella Osgood#Eleventh Doctor#(Eleventh) Doctor is neurodivergent tag#words by seaweed#zygon osgood upon complimenting human osgood during the negotiation:#“I love it! How do you cope though? Stop equipping every character with therapy speak and instead consider placing them somewhere on this chart

#eyyy how long I left this in drafts#them coping? try functional. river tries to talk. the doctor deflects w grand gesture. river responds by hiding damage. they make it work!#the not-rude psychopath and her madman in a box <3 (not that either of them relate to these words in an super healthy way)#anyway based on DotD novelization: eleven does not seem to have any interest in learning to cope with his ptsd OR psychosis OR depression#he doesn't want to acknowledge it! he wants to “move on”! fake it till he makes it!#consequentially river gets unloading onto a therapy bot :D and he doesn't realize that he did it :D they're a mess but they try#(eleventh) doctor is neurodivergent tag#I feel like River knows therapy speak because she clearly put in a lot of work since Berlin (Sisters of the Infinite Schism Hospital?)#young brainwashed river has no reaction to her beloved parents distress when she's killing the Doctor. she kind of legit forgets abt them#but older River is actively mindful and able to comfort Amy when the Doctor is “too busy” to hug Amy in Flesh and Stone#her empathy is cognitive - not emotional - but she's learned how to perform to make people she loves feel better.#and from what I can tell in the audios? shes worked on her happiness too. with how The Furies works out… as well as can be expected#at least she never went on a 200-year-long bender or spent lord knows how many years on a cloud. her husband sets a lowww bar for coping#river song#eleventh doctor#words by seaweed#art by seaweed#the twelfth doctor still hasn't learned what ptsd is by the way. Clara tried to explain it to him but he got distracted#“maybe Clara's right. she keeps saying I have attention deficit... something or other” <- it was during that conversation

Listen I need to hear about 11s PTSD pleaseeee like is it in the books, the audios??? I've not been able to get my hand at either but this feels like such an important detail to him😭

OKAY SO DAY OF THE DOCTOR NOVELIZATION, THE LOVE OF MY LIFE.

11 experiences, multiple times, auditory hallucinations regarding the end of the time war. one of the times shown he starts spiraling before being pulled back to reality by someone he was in the middle of talking to, and has to keep himself from spiraling again by reading extremely dense quantum physics books until clara shows up.

this one happens shortly after he regenerates into 11, while he's taking new-body inventory.

this one happens while he's calling clara's school to ask if she can get off work early to hang out with him

And on a related note, 11's PTSD about how many children died on Gallifrey got so bad at some point, that River started regularly checking if he knew the number, because she knows how bad he is when he does know it. it's literally so bad they had to remove the memory of how many. possibly multiple times. 10 knows the number, 11 doesn't. he doesn't remember he removed the memory. that's such a Thing.

Okay, so there's a lot of fourth wall breaking, references of the Doctor hearing non-diagetic music, a spontaneous musical number (after the big bad has been defeated no less) and so on already, both in the trailers and in episodes. Like so many fourth wall breaks, particularly in The Devil's Chord.

This is definitely a part of the bigger picture going on this series, yes?

Our current thought is it's almost like the Doctor is acting as himself (I can't quite think of the right way to word it)

#that is so interesting#and like. makes me think of the theory that’s The Legend of Ruby Sunday reveals that Ruby is in fact a legend that was-#summoned by invoking superstition at the edge of the universe and the Doctor is narrating her legend!#I think that theory started as being about why he seems to talk to (and wink at) the camera in the trailer?#which is an interesting idea. and he is lying to her (secretly scanning her etc) he COULD be up to something we don't know#it could be his long game against the toymaker and the legions. he panicked over maestro- it was too early- he wasn't ready.#I like the doctor acting as themself- the doctor is trapped in a show. like the Changing Channels episode of supernatural#the fictionalized version of doctor who as seen in that one seventh doctor episode. the doctor hasn't always been trapped but now he is#he gotta play along. ruby can't know she's not human (she's a construct like in the Extremis computer) or sumn#mrs flood is an executive producer. or a showrunner. the more specific I get the wronger I'll get. but I love your theory#I just looked up what non-diagetic means and ooooo. yeah. your right that is a LOT of fourth wall breaks#whatever they do they better not retroactively mess with twelve talking to the camera. let him monologue to the Listen creatures <3#if they pull a meta ‘the Doctor has always known they’re in a show! any viewer could be the Doctor! even you!’ ill be very upset#they wouldn't tho. would they? WOULD they? they wouldn't.#wonder if the doctorverse will come in. the memory tardis from that trailer shot feels tied into it somehow#alternate doctors alternate timelines alternate stories the tv show of doctor who#fifteenth doctor#ruby sunday

this is probably an unpopular opinion but I think interpreting the doctor as passively evil is an interesting character experiment. like, by human standards they’re pretty much an immortal, ancient, godlike entity. they travel all of time and space, saving or destroying entire civilizations on a whim. they travel with humans because they’re obsessed, almost addicted, to human mortality and naivety. sure, they claim to love their companions, but involvement in their lives almost always ends in misery, and then it’s onto the next. imagine the TARDIS filled with abandoned bedrooms, clothes on the floor, beds unmade, toothpaste in the sink. their things frozen in time, dust-covered and tomblike. and the doctor is drifting through space, surrounded by evidence of all the lives they’ve ruined. anyway, if anyone has evil doctor fic recommendations pls drop them below.

“time lords are friends with each other. anything else is cradle snatching.” she had a point.
