The song Harry added to the pre-show setlist tonight during his first night in Mexico City was “Querida” by Juan Gabriel. He was a Mexican singer and an icon who recently passed away. The thing about Juan Gabriel is that he had one of the most harrowing childhoods, but one of the most inspiring climbs to the stage as a result of his gift of songwriting throughout all his life adversities. As an impoverished child, a young adult constantly turned down by the music industry and artist finding his way he speaks to every dreamer out there. I really encourage anyone who is not familiar with him to look up his truly inspiring if at times heartbreaking story. He was a man that transcended rigid ideas of gender and sexuality in a country where you can make or break a career for not following it’s strict rules on masculinity. He embraced femininity on stage paving the way for artists everywhere to be themselves all while writing song after song that have been passed down from generation to generation. Almost from the start of his career speculation about his sexuality followed him everywhere. He refused to give into the media’s pressure to answer their invasive questions. He lived life true to himself while being generous and kind. He wrote more than 1,800 songs that will be sang long after his death. The fact that Harry chose his song for his playlist and the similarities in style for his outfit tonight speak volumes about his respect for Mexico. Two icons unapologetically themselves under the lights of Mexico City. Mexico lindo y querido canten con toda su alma! Que absoluto orgullo! 💞🇲🇽🕺🏻
