Sara, it’s not that we don’t think people like your husband (Shane Madej) and his friends/employees deserve to be paid fairly.
Here’s what it actually is to Watcher’s fanbase/audience:
A) The fact mostly nobody in this fanbase can afford another streaming subscription. Watcher’s audience is broke high school/college kids who can barely afford groceries
B) The fact that ALL future content is going behind a paywall. Look at GMM. GMM has tons of employees I’m sure they pay fairly. And they still have tons of free content on top of their paid stuff. I’m all for wanting Watcher and their employees to be paid fair or more!!
But: Watcher’s audience and (formerly) Buzzfeed Unsolved’s audience is on YouTube for a reason. It is free and accessible. Most of Watcher’s audience doesn’t get paid a fair, living wage, however. Not enough to afford this luxury of a streaming service.
C) the fact that nobody wanted this at all. Watcher could have ran a poll, live QNA, anything to gauge if their own audience wanted this or not. But no, they dropped it on our heads and expected us to be ok with it. (And as of now seem to be ignoring the backlash!)
We know Watcher wants to move on and get bigger and better, but this isn’t the move/kind of things people want/can afford. So many of us can’t afford necessities, let alone a $6 monthly subscription.
I’ll also be honest. Nobody wants to pay $6 a month for what might be the single thing they watch on Watcher’s channel. I’m not paying $6 monthly to watch Ghost Files alone. Nor is someone paying that amount monthly to watch Puppet History only.
I won’t even get much into how Ryan, Shane, and Steven’s family/loved ones have spoken out/posted before they have.
Or the comment that, Sara, your post feels guilty trippy. “It’s your fault for not watching the content!” When they could, instead, reflect on why people aren’t watching, and go from there instead.
