February Event: Social Media!AU Status: Open to the public :) See post here for details.

The letter from Percy is such a great piece of work—because it IS so obnoxious and deluded and you keep wincing because it’s embarrassing as anything.

But it’s also undoubtedly stemming from the fact that Percy loves Ron dearly, and there’s a consideration to why he does it. He didn’t set out to be obnoxious—for Percy it’s downright sensitive. He specifically writes and sends it so Ron will get it at a time when he can read it in private and without any pressures from anyone else, and the threats Percy speaks about are…real for the most part. He has hold of the wrong end of it, but the problem and threat to Ron’s life and future…exists. There’s a kind of softness—after what has happened that summer—to Percy writing a letter where he titles himself Ron’s brother and actually apologizes for not seeing him more.

Which, btw, the fact that he thinks that’s at all a priority for Ron in this whole affair is perhaps the only delusion in the letter where I can feel NOTHING but empathy for Percy. He feels this responsibility towards Ron, and as much as it is easy for us to think, “he should know Ron is ready to kick him in the teeth for being a jerk”…god, it’s SAD that he really thinks to himself, “I need to make sure Ron knows that I CARE that I haven’t seen him.”

He’s being an idiot, but he loves his brother.

There’s also the subtle backtracking of what had seemed like a simple stance before—that Percy was leaving and he wasn’t a part of the family anymore. You can already see him starting to reshuffle what was declared and decided in anger, because NOW…it’s all very situational and he very much hopes that it will be resolved eventually!!!

And I’m not sure he’s even conscious of that process, but it’s happening.

The conflict between his family and the government is still unnatural to him, and—probably because he needs to for his own emotional security—he assumes that it can be resolved. They’ll figure out and feel bad and he will be happy to reconcile with them! It’s arrogant and an asshole assertion, but it’s also…childish and naive. He hasn’t accepted reality—not just about Voldemort, but about what has happened and what is at stake with him and his family. What the Minister would DO to them given the chance—and there’s nothing Percy could do to stop him. The ignorance is astounding and frustrating, but reading it back knowing what happens…it’s also kind of devastating. Because the learning curve is coming, and it’s approaching at a high velocity.

I just…I love the way Rowling constructed Percy, I really do. It’s not in vogue to compliment her, but I have to give credit where it’s due: it’s some of my favorite character work in the series. And judging by her little Skeeter quip in that World Cup piece a few years ago, I think it’s very intentional and always was.

To some people in the Wizarding World, Percy Weasley is a nitpicking beaurocrat, and others will fervently assert that he’s “not that bad when you get to know him.” And WE get to know him—fans do it over and over and over again. And he warms, on a reread. He opens up. He becomes a person you can look at with a kind of fondness and understanding (accompanied by frustration and amusement, to be sure). It’s really…skillful and subtle what she manages. From a character who is himself about as subtle as a brick coming through a window. The writing and craft behind how she writes him is what carries the whole thing off. I love it.

@percyprotectionnet post war au: in which percy attempts to start a festival, and not accidentally get into a relationship with oliver wood

“I am going to shoot myself,” Percy declares. It’s one in the morning, he’s currently drowning under a mound of paperwork, his glasses really need cleaned, almost everyone has already abdicated, and yet almost nothing has been done. “In fact, no, that’s too clean. I’m going to break that stone off the wall there and bludgeon myself to death with it, slowly, while suffering.”

“Might I recommend going to sleep?” Audrey says lightly from across the table; Percy raises his hands to his temples and massages them, putting as much pressure on as possible without hurting himself (though, to be fair, hurting himself would simply be an externalisation of what he’s feeling on the inside).

“I have to finish this,” he insists.

“Look, even if all of us stay here until morning, we’re not going to get it finished tonight. Just go to sleep, because then you’ll feel better and we won’t make any mistakes, and the Daily Prophet won’t kill us,” Lee grumbles; he can’t believe he’s still here at all, and is still questioning why he turned up for this job in the first place. He’s being paid tuppence. “Rita Skeeter is having some kind of vengeful comeback, so we need to avoid the bad publicity, or we’re all going to be having apparent emotional breakdowns by next week. And I might be gay again. And you might start dating Oliver Wood again.”

Percy groans; he’s never going to forget moving in with Oliver immediately post-battle and the ensuing Daily Prophet insistence that they were dating, and just the thought of it makes him get up, pulling on his coat. “Right. Okay. I’m going to get some sleep. I’ll be back tomorrow morning.”

“You say that as if you think I’m going to be here all night,” Lee scoffs; Audrey elbows him under the table.

“Well, I was hoping I would’ve instilled a better work ethic in you by now, Lee,” Percy says softly, “but I suppose that was a vain hope.” He smiles, and with a loud crack, he’s gone.

Happy February !

At thirty-six - married, climbing the Ministry ladder slowly and honestly, and raising two seven year olds - Percy thought he knew how the next ten years of his life would play out.

That confidence is shaken in the best possible way one June evening when he’s woken in the middle of the night with Oliver’s fingers poking his ribs and his eyes wide and shining.

“Perce. Perce. Perce.”

“What?” Percy mumbles, reaching for his glasses.

“Do you wanna have another baby?” Oliver asks. And with his husband’s huge brown eyes looking at him that way, and with the way he’s felt about children since holding his brothers in his arms for the first time at the age of two, who is Percy to say no?

They whisper about it in the dark of that amber July night, and just over a year later, the adoption papers are signed for newborn Kenilworthy Ryan Weasley-Wood, Ken for short, who turns out to be the biggest adventure of Percy’s entire life.

Prompt: viktor+percy, first kiss

au where percy is a supervillain, and viktor is his feared second-in-command

  • to everybody else in the city, percy weasley is terrifying: he owns the police, his twin brothers own the media, and if anyone tries to stand in his way, they never last long
  • but to viktor, percy is a surprisingly gentle soul - just a soul with slight power issues and a desire to get things done his own way
  • in the time percy isn’t using to run his jazz club, crush his enemies, manage his finances, or meet his multitude of siblings, he spends either reading, playing double bass, or - peculiarly enough - baking
  • viktor’s been the guinea pig for many an experimental recipe, from cookies with spice to chocolate orange cake with actual bits of orange in it - or for the occasional unusual double bass solo
  • he knows that it’s perhaps unconventional to live with his boss, but percy’s not the most aware of people
  • hell, he’d probably forget to eat or drink - percy’s not stupid, he’s rigid and routined, but occasionally he forgets the simple things amongst his busy schedule
  • and, despite his wonderful baking skills due to his mildly anal measuring, percy can’t actually cook very well
  • he almost set the kitchen on fire once, so viktor insists on cooking for him instead, even though he’s scarcely much better - but he doesn’t forget meals, and makes sure that percy is eating a balanced diet
  • that is, of course, when he’s not beating up or killing people on percy’s behalf
  • it’s part of the job
  • but, really, it’s simple: viktor enjoys living with percy. percy doesn’t mind that viktor’s quiet and sure doesn’t mind having someone to do the housework for him, and viktor -
  • well, viktor’s in love with him
  • viktor wouldn’t take care of anyone else to this level, not even if they tripled his pay, but percy means the world to him
  • they’ve been a team since the start - viktor was the first person percy ever hired back at the tender age of seventeen, when he decided that the best way to forward his agenda in the corrupt city of hogsmeade was to simply become a larger corruption
  • viktor had been just a smidge younger and dealing for an underground casino - he’d only been involved at the time to help his mother with finances, and he was respected at the casino for his shuffling skills (courtesy of his late father, a stage magician) and for the brute strength that ensured patrons pay up
  • and who had walked in through the door but percy weasley, with his naive and curly ginger hair and his tweed suit, looking like an outsider and the world’s easiest target, but oh
  • oh how he had won game after game of poker and taken many a richer man’s riches
  • and oh how when no-one left would play him, he had turned to viktor and paid him to safely escort him home, and then on second thought had hired viktor on the spot
  • percy made his moves so wisely, a chess player at heart, and viktor could only watch with what became some sort of glee as he began to take over the city
  • and yet what viktor loves most of all is percy off-duty: percy under blankets on the sofa reading books and percy challenging viktor to games of darts and percy playing old jazz and soul records and percy wearing thick comfortable jumpers around the house
  • but percy is his boss over anything else, and he knows that: making any move is liable to get him stabbed with percy’s treasured sword-cane, and viktor values both his life and the cut of his paycheck that makes sure his mother eats
  • until the summer arrives where they’re in their early twenties and percy catches the flu
  • viktor has to do everything for him that summer - he delegates business dealings to penelope clearwater, who he knows will be just fine at executing percy’s will and will no doubt enjoy getting to scare old white men, and he spends his own time taking care of percy
  • it’s intimate in a way he’s never experienced before: he has to help percy drink sometimes, and help him eat, and keep an eye on his temperature and replace the cool cloths on his head before they get warm and useless, and he calls in a doctor every now and then for a checkup and follows the advice given to the letter
  • and he has to bath percy, eventually: he doesn’t trust that percy will manage without him, and washes his hair, a wild and tangled mullet that he keeps mentioning cutting but to which viktor is particularly prone
  • “you know,” percy says somewhat dreamily as viktor is trying to gently brush the knots out of his hair, “i knew when i first looked at you that you were someone special, and i’m rather glad that i hired you”
  • viktor’s heart, the steadiest one he knows, skips a beat
  • the summer is both long and short, but before viktor really knows what’s happening, percy is back on his feet, never one to be defeated - he accepts extra assistance, sure, but starts returning back to the field and to his club
  • viktor loves percy’s jazz club: it’s not the criminal den people think it is, and instead is just a place for everybody to come and drink anything from orange juice to vodka and enjoy some live jazz from the country’s finest
  • percy himself occasionally joins to perform, being fairly proficient himself, but mostly he prefers to observe and enjoy
  • much to viktor’s hearty protests, percy’s first return to the club is in a performance role: he plays with a group doing jazz renditions of the greatest hits of the troggs, and percy joins in for wild thing
  • when he’s done, he rejoins viktor at their booth and, with the kind of smile he usually saves for the privacy of his home, he says “viktor krum, you are a wild thing”
  • and kisses him right there
  • it’s everything viktor ever expected and yet so much more than he could ever dream of, and percy takes his hand and leads him back to the car that’s waiting for them, and back to the humble house that they live in
  • and viktor’s first kiss becomes his second, and his third, and his fourth, and then he stops counting
  • because percy loves him just as much, loves the time and care and dedication he puts it and loves that viktor always entertains him for games of darts or snooker or monopoly and listens to him play and eats his terrible experiments and always says good things about them
  • and viktor could never ask for more
