🚨 The FCC plans to kill net neutrality on December 14 🚨

It’s real simple: ISP lobbyists are pushing the FCC to kill net neutrality so phone and cable companies can block apps, slow down websites, and charge fees to control what you see and do online.

Our only chance is congressional pressure and legislative action. But we need grassroots support. Tell your representatives that you support “Title 2” rules and ask for their help protecting a free and open internet.

Go to Battle For The Net to be connected to your congresspeople.

Once more for old time’s sake

🔥 With your help, we passed Title II net neutrality protections. Now we need to defend it.🔥

On December 14 the FCC will vote on Commissioner Pai’s plan to repeal Title II rules. This week he tried to justify that decision with a “myth busting” explainer where he makes a lot of sweeping claims he doesn’t think you’ll fact check.

So let’s go through his big points:

❌ Mr. Pai claims ISPs won’t block access or throttle content

These are the real facts. Before Title II, the internet was so “free and open” that…

  • Comcast blocked P2P file sharing services (EFF).
  • AT&T blocked Skype from iPhones (Fortune) and, later, wanted FaceTime users to pay for a more expensive plan (Freepress).
  • MetroPCS blocked all streaming video except YouTube (Wired).

In today’s media market where the same huge companies make and deliver content, Commissioner Pai wants us to trust that corporations won’t use their dominance to bury competitive content or services.

❌ Mr. Pai claims Title II keeps ISPs from building new networks

Here’s another claim Commissioner Pai doesn’t want you to fact check, but:

  • AT&T’s own CEO told investors that the company would deploy more fiber optic networks in 2016 than 2015 when the FCC passed Title II protections (Investor call transcript).
  • Charter’s CEO said “Title II, it didn’t really hurt us; it hasn’t hurt us” (Ars Technica).
  • And Comcast actually increased investment in their network by 10% in Q1 of this year (Ars).

❌ Mr. Pai claims repealing Title II won’t hurt competition

As we mentioned above, ISPs tried to interfere with the services their customers could access and courts had to step in to stop them.

The FCC tried to craft net neutrality rules in 2010 called the Open Internet Order but the ISPs sued and won. The courts told the FCC that the only way to guarantee a free and open internet was using their Title II authority. Without those protections, any of these things would be legal:

  • Your ISP launches a streaming video service and starts throttling other streaming services until they’re unusable.
  • Your phone company cuts a deal with a popular music streaming service so it doesn’t count towards your data cap but lowers your overall data limit. If a better service comes along (or your favorite artist releases new tracks somewhere else) you can’t use it without incurring huge data fees.
  • A billionaire buys your ISP and blocks access to news sites that challenge their ideology.

Repealing Title II would be like letting a car company own the roads and banning a competitor from the highways.

❌ Mr. Pai claims there won’t be fast lanes and slow lanes

Let’s break this down: We won’t have fast lanes and slow lanes, we’ll have “priority access” and…non-priority access? Well gosh.

🚨 Please help us protect Title II one more time! 🚨

This week we co-signed a letter with more than 300 other companies—businesses Mr. Pai gleefully ignores—urging the FCC to retain the Title II internet protections. Now we need you.

Go to 👉 Battle For The Net 👈  to start a call with your representatives in Congress. Tell them to publicly support Title II protections.

The FCC votes on December 14.

We’re only powerful when we work together.

Oh, also: that post about automatically unfollowing the #net neutrality tag—it’s not true. It’s really not. That’s not who we are. Whatever happened, we haven’t been able to reproduce it. We tried. A lot.

But if it were true—which it’s not, we feel compelled to say again—THAT’S EXACTLY WHY YOU SHOULD CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES and demand a free, open, and neutral internet.

We can do this one more time, guys! ❤️

i don’t mean to get political but with the fear of net neutrality getting killed i really want to say a couple of things before i can’t:

in 2018, you HAVE to vote in the mid term elections. if you want any chance of stopping this decline of progression and if you want any hope for having a safe future for the next 30+ years, you NEED TO VOTE. it is your right, it is your duty, it is your message to those who want to hurt you financially, medically, mentally, etc. take a stand and say you will not vote for them, show them that you do not support them or their agenda, and essentially fire them from their jobs. that is something that you have a say in, since, with the tax plan that was just passed, the general american population did NOT get a say in it and most people do not get a say in things getting passed by congress.

an education is going to be your best friend. educate yourself on everything you can (community college is the best, cheapest way to do this if you don’t care about getting a degree and you can’t teach yourself. it’s about $75 pr credit hour (at least at my college)) research everything you vote for, there are usually hidden things in most bills (like the tax bill, in that it was declared that life began at conception, and with what that has to do with taxes, idk) read the constitution, and all political documents that you can, because knowledge is power. (also fafsa!!!!! fafsa is your bff)

the cost of tuition is going to rise. an education is going to get harder to get because the right-wing does NOT want you to be educated. why? because educated people across the boards have a trend of voting liberal. (and isn’t it funny that the mass that votes conservative is uneducated? lmao, the more u know) and here’s a handy poll:

money is the only thing congress cares about, because money is also power. they will pass bills that make the rich richer and keep the poor poor, either because they are the rich or the rich are funding them. they’re also letting money inspire fear, hence with the taxes on grad students. if you’re gonna have to pay more money, chances are you’re not gonna do it. the whole net neutrality thing is also (mainly) about service providers making more money.

another thing: we need to acknowledge that, while old white men are seemingly the only one’s making decisions in this country, that it is not exclusively THEIR country. we need to make that known. look at the polls from the last election showing the differences in voting via race, age, and gender:

and sure, some of these numbers are kind of close, but think about how different it would be if everyone ACTUALLY voted? about 100 MILLION people didn’t bother to vote in the past election.  what the actual fuck? 100 million out of the 232 million eligible voters did not vote. i repeat: 100/232 million people did not vote. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT!

also, if you want to know one of the main reasons why gaining a citizenship is so hard.. this is why. the right-wing doesn’t want you to vote, because chances are you’ll vote against them.

there is so much more stuff i want to cover and this got kinda off tangent but i have so much coursework to do right now. i’ll probably add more later when i’m Angry about the state of this country but i’ll leave it here with some parting words:

vote. vote. vote. if u cant get there yourself i’ll give u a ride. just please. vote.

save as much money as you can. put it in a savings account with compounding interest. here’s a video explaining why. idk if there’s any discourse around this guy but my business prof showed me this and i thought it was important so here u go

if you’re going into college and need money. fafsa. scholarships. i found a website my senior year for unique scholarships based off of funny little prompts. here u go. try to avoid loans if you can.

community college is ur bff. trust me. its so much cheaper, but for the same education. it’s not lame, it’s smart. also SAVE ALL YOUR COURSEWORK.

GET A CREDIT CARD, BUT DON’T USE IT. ok, use it a little. but only for small things you know you can pay in full. i’m only using mine when i put gas in my car. get a good credit score early.

follow politics and the news closely. i know it sucks and it’s scary but it’s better to be educated on the topic.

FIGHT FOR NET NEUTRALITY. FIGHT FOR IT. CALL UR REPS.

it’s okay to be scared about your future, but don’t let that fear hold you back. be proactive, and do what you can today to make tomorrow better. be motivated to make change, and be confident enough to inspire it in others. fight for what you want. let’s kick ass in 2018.
