kate drops in behind one of the perpetrators, just as they turn to look because of the girls words swinging her bat with force she connects with the first mans knee, spins and connects with the next guys stomach before finishing with a swift stab of the end of the bat into his temple, dropping him to the ground. kate gave the other woman a small smile, tipping her hat at her. “is that good enough? i could rough ‘em up a little more if you want. i’m here to please. you’re not hurt are you?”

hera watches with wide eyes as the woman drops them one by one in quick succession.  well, holy shit.  with the threat taken care of, hera can actually relax for a second, and she shrugs when kate asks her the first question.  “ i mean, you could rough ‘em up a little more.  i wouldn’t complain about it. ”  she does a quick survey of her own injuries.  “ nah, just a couple bruises. ”

    mara considers hera for a moment. with furrowed brows and narrowed eyes, it’s clear she’s confused by such a sentiment. failure of any sort has never been permitted. “ i cannot say i agree. disappointment where i’m from is a death sentence, most often – as it should be. ” or so says the league.

   now she’s distracted by the laughter that threatens to bubble up.  this is going to be a bad reading.  she takes his hands, peers at the lines for a few seconds.  “ tuesday.  you’re gonna get a pizza on tuesday. ”  she makes a note to drop a pizza in his lap on tuesday at some point.  because hera’s nothing if not committed to a bad joke.

    mara eyes hera with furrowed brow as the instinctual desire to reach for her swords is quelled through sheer willpower. casual touches are not something she is accustomed to; being raised by ra’s meant being blanketed by violence. she’s uncomfortable. “ good company?? ” she repeats, lips pursed as she considers her words, “ far from boring. even the best of company is sure to disappoint your expectations eventually. ”

   hera considers mara’s point for a few long seconds.  “ hm, yeah.  i guess that’s true.  but as long as it’s not a constant disappointment, right ??  like, i’m okay with the best of company disappointing me sometimes.  as long as they keep being the best most the time. ”

   there’s a surly pause where hera thinks about lying again.  but, honestly ??  what does she care ??  “ yeah, it happened.  i lost control in a fight.  could have brought down a building.  you know, i’m having one of those great superhero moments. ”  she puts a hand to her heart and starts a dramatic monologue, “ who do superheroes answer to if not the will of the people ??  i think that was the plot of the incredibles. ”

   magical energy depleted, hera has officially gotten in over her head.  hand to hand combat is far from her strong point.  and honestly, she still feels betrayed by the fact that punching things actually hurts her hands.  what’s the point of punching ??  this would-be mugging might turn into a real mugging since she’s exactly no use right now.  but it’s a city full of masks, so -- “ hey, miss !!  can i get a hand ?? ”
