It’s been a good solid day since he left his flat – and her – as soon as the words escaped his lips. He was sure she called out to him, but it didn’t change the fact that he wanted to get away from whatever she was about to say or to see the look on her face upon hearing his confession.

John may have qualified his involvement with The Woman to romantic entanglement many times to the point that his avoidance of her reaction seemed unnecessary, but in all the years of their rendezvous and their acquaintanceship, this was the first time those three words actually made their appearance.

He doesn’t know why but it made him fearful. Fearful to the point that he could feel bile rising up his throat, cold sweat drenching the back of his collar. He could usually survive days on end without food but right now, he could feel his body trembling, physiology a victim of his neglect. 

He always turns revoltingly human when it comes to her. 

With his nails digging into his palms at the harshness of his own balled fists, he decided to resolve the issue by facing the matter at hand. It was between him, her, and his own heart that was on the line and sooner or later he had to go back and confront whatever her reply will be. As soon as he gets over this perilous emotional takeover his body and mind are overwhelmed with, the faster he is to go back to normal – whatever that is. 

But could he really? Could he go back to the way he was? It felt like now his world is divided into before those three words escaped his lips and after it. It’s an insane feeling and he is not liking it one bit. 

Heavy steps. He walked up 221B’s steps with every fibre of his being hardening, solidifying, tethering every logical and reasonable cell in his body to face the situation at hand not with his heart but his head. And then he saw her, sitting at his chair by the fireplace, the curve of her lips tilting at his entrance. 

And just like that, all realisation hits that even his head is taken over by the sight of her….and everything in him just comes undone.
