“When you think about the photographers, the cameramen, who, in the black and white days, the time they spent in creating shadows…The time they took creating shadows… Leave the black and white pictures the way they were made, and forget about it!” —James Stewart on the colorization of “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)

(From an interview with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show // December 27th, 1989)

I think when a lot of people see black and white films, they focus on them being before colour, therefore only seeing limitation, rather than appreciating the work achieved with the medium. They don't consider (like Jimmy brought up) how purposeful manipulation of shadows can add to the story, caring more about what they're "missing". Similarly, silent films often go without appreciation for how they worked around not being able to add audible dialogue, needing to put in extra effort through cues in facial expressions and body language. Attempting to add colour (or speech) just takes away from the dedication and thoughtfulness of those who originally made those films

Promo shot for Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead (1981) featuring Bruce Campbell and Bridget Hoffman.  Bridget Hoffman, a voice actor, was not in the film, hired only as a photographic model for the promotional materials including the poster, of which she is the only one featured. She would later appear as an extra in the third installment Army of Darkness (1992) as a sword fighter, and in the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead (2015) as the voice of Lil’ Lori, a possessed doll.
