So I’m finally watching Rogue One for the first time. I’m not even done yet and I can already tell I want to write Baze, as if I haven’t been on a sci-fi kick for like six months already.

Headcanon that, as of now, community service is the most common sentence for lawbreakers on the Nexus whose crime doesn’t absolutely require imprisonment or exile - such as Nilken, being held for murder, and Keri, who was incarcerated as much to protect her from rioters as anything else. 

The Nexus doesn’t have the resources to support even a small prison population, and using exile liberally only increases the manpower of the Outcasts, so Kandros usually sentences thieves, rioters, and other non-lethal lawbreakers to put in time helping to repair the station, with the length, difficulty, and intensity of the work being determined by the severity of the offense, turning criminals back into a source of much-needed productivity. Misbehaving on the Nexus? You get handed over to Kesh, who is given leave to work you to the bone and to take no shit from you for it. So far it’s been a very effective technique - severe enough punishment to discourage repeat offenses, but not the type of punishment to breed widespread resentment for law enforcement at an unstable time when security can’t afford it. And having a Krogan taskmaster has a way of discouraging complaints

Rewatching the Star Wars saga entirely because of @skychose. Am now reminded of why I love C-3P0 so much; I too am polite to everyone but my best friends, whom I will drag constantly, extremely distressed when things don’t go according to plan and/or the rules, perpetually nervous, and feel like I was assembled from spare parts in a ten year old’s back yard.

      ———- ❛ hey, kandros. ❜ despite how much the pathfinder has done to help find the turian ark, sara doesn’t see it that way. it’s not any trouble to her, just something as part of the job. she wanted to see the turian ark return to the nexus as much as anyone else, there’s been too much misery going on ever since they hit the new galaxy. every bit of good news they can get — sara’s going to go searching for it. the only thing is that she wishes that she could’ve done more. her own hand extends in response to his, shaking the hand firmly.  ❛ you really don’t need to thank me. i’m sure you would’ve done the same. plus, i wouldn’t have been able to do it without avitus, he was a huge help. so make sure you thank the turian pathfinder, too. ❜ that brings a smile to her face, knowing that she’s not the only pathfinder out there now. but of course, there’s always going to want to thank her too, and sara will gladly visit the families that want to see her. already, it feels like it’s worth it, but it’s nice to put a face to the person you saved. ❛ of course! i’ve got some free time right now, if you want? ❜

     “Thanking a Turian for doing his job doesn’t really have the same impact; we’re not great at accepting praise.” A buzzing chuckle rose deep in his chest as he shook her hand, eyes creasing warmly at the corners. “He’s been coordinating with APEX to retrieve the pods the Natanus ejected; many didn’t survive the landing, but we’re finding people. We’re lucky somebody talked him into taking the job; turns out a Spectre was just what we needed.” Even wounded by loss the man was devastatingly cunning: the Kett were in for a series of very rude awakenings in their near future, now that there were enough Turians organized in the cluster and the right people leading them. There was a dark satisfaction pulsing in the center of his chest at the knowledge that, very soon, they’d be able to show the bastards a people who really knew how to make war.

     “Can’t leave my post now - but, actually-” He looked up over Sara’s shoulder, across militia HQ, and emitted a sharp chirp where a human might have whistled, catching the attention of another Turian sitting over a console. The man was very elderly - in his eighties, in fact - carapace long worn of its sheen and stooped a little with age, and his fringe had been snapped off halfway at some point in his long life, but his eyes were still sharp, and when he stood and approached at Tiran’s gesture his posture was proud, gnarled hands clasped neatly at the small of his back.

     “Ryder, this is General Acanus; his daughter and grandchildren were on the Natanus.” The old Turian’s mandibles flickered, and he lowered his head respectfully.

     “And all safely accounted for, now. Although it should be Allecto, to you; ‘General’ is more an unavoidable nickname these days than a rank.” The reverb in the old man’s voice sounded rusty and guttural, but the humor in his tone could still be picked out, and he briefly pressed one fist to his chest in a salute. “You do your people credit, Pathfinder. If anything on this voyage has given me hope, it’s been watching the young take their place on the front so readily, even in the absence of guidance from the old.”

I think it was established as fanon long ago that the reason Turian voices have that reverb is because they possess multiple sets of vocal cords - the vocal and sub-vocal sets, as most people describe them. Headcanon that the reason for this quirk of evolution is related to communication and language: Turian faces and mouths are much less mobile than human ones, and as a result are capable of forming significantly fewer phonemes, so what allows their language to reach the same level of complexity is the fact that one set of sounds pronounced in the vocals could mean something totally different when combined with different sets pronounced in the subvocals, which are generally used to indicate context or express emotional nuance.

This is at least part of why Turians are stereotyped as stoic and poker-faced: because they can’t move their faces for the most part, and other species miss the ways they do express themselves. Turians refer to this as being “tone-deaf” - a phrase which usually carries connotations of exasperation and frustration, although like any mild insult it can be used fondly.

So I probably idealize Turian culture a bit in headcanons with the things I wish human society could be - the lack of sexism is a good example - but the one idealization I’ll never be embarrassed about is the headcanon that Turian society actually takes care of its veterans.

Spirits know my people weren’t nearly as open-minded the last time we were in your situation.” He couldn’t blame any of them for being wary of new alien races appearing in their territory and almost immediately beginning to form a standing military, no matter their motivations for doing so. The fact that more than a few of them were still capable of looking and hoping for the good in outsiders after the Kett was more than admirable.
