Protagonist-Centered Sexuality

I don't think there's any better way of starting this essay than the story behind this quote.

(Note: Some who were around at the time of this story mentioned that that the team was under pressure to say Hana was bi instead of gay, partly from discourse with "people who took offence at Hana being coded lesbian". Being in the fringes of this discussion at the time, I cannot completely confirm the veracity of this, but just for clarity I thought I'd add this context as well. For the purposes of this essay, though, I will be mostly referring to Hana as bi and focusing to a larger extent on depictions of bisexuality, but will attempt to discuss whether that is reflected at all in the writing).

Sometime in October of 2017 (a few weeks after TRR2 released), a player had posed a question to the Choices Support Team. Does Hana Lee have a canon sexuality? The response was... bizarre - if I were to put it in the kindest way possible - even if you were someone who barely paid attention to Hana's scenes:

There was plenty of backlash over this response, of course, because when the hell had Hana ever tried to "pursue the prince" and how the hell would that make her straight! Kara Loo, one of the book leads, almost immediately posted a response, apologizing and maintaining that "this doesn't reflect how we view bisexuality at Pixelberry". It was clear from her post that Hana wasn't out to herself yet, forget anyone else, and it seemed to hint at a journey of sorts.

It's 2021 now, and we're on the seventh and final book of the series. The word "bisexual" hasn't appeared in the story once.

I'm so glad you found this essay informative and accurate 💗💗 And absolutely, it does disturb me quite a bit when we're expected to be grateful for the barest minimum yet even a cursory reading should give you a fair idea of the disrespect many queer characters (esp female LIs who are WOC) get. If you are interested, this is part of an essay series on Hana over the course of the series, and the rest deal with different aspects such as her overall treatment, the way the narrative handles her relationships and how it talks about her origins and ethnicity.

I did!!! This was AMAZING! The disrespect all these characters get would be hilarious if it wasn’t so concerning lol. The way PB has avoided or misrepresented the topic of sexuality and have an open discussion about it with characters OUTSIDE of there being anything romantic about it is just sad and I have been hoping for a long time that that will change. This is so cool of you to write!! I’ll definitely check that out!!💕

I commissioned @/artbyainna on Instagram to create this scene from Human Contact where Leo tosses Riley in the tub for my Tumblrversary last week:

He walked into her room that morning, seeing her splayed on the bed, staring at nothing. "Hey Riles!How about a shower today?"

She glanced at him. "I'm fine."

Leo tried again. "It'll probably make you feel better."

Riley looked back at him. "No." She rolled over away from him.

Leo had enough. He got why she was upset but she couldn't spend her days in bed. He knew she didn't like being pushed and he did not care.

He stomped over to her bed and pulled the blanket off her. Before she had a chance to react, he picked her up; one arm under her thighs and the other supporting her back. Riley sputtered, too shocked to do anything else.

Leo walked into the en-suite and turned the shower on. He set Riley down in the tub and pulled the curtain.

"See you when you're clean!" he sang. "We'll talk after."

She captured them perfectly and I’m so in love with this ❤️❤️ Thank you so much!!!
