On the left, we have an excerpt from the production draft of the 2x11 script, when Sam suggests Dean is over-compensating. In this version, Dean tells him to fuck off. (script source)
Now on the right we have what actually happened in the episode. DEAN LOOKS AWAY AND LAUGHS NERVOUSLY AND IS ALL “haha….right” (gif source)
So either the script was changed or Jensen decided to play it this way.

already miss the absolute sweat inducing, heart palpitating, hands shaking emotion that welled up in me when cas started speaking and his tone shifted and i just Knew he was going to declare his love for this man and i’m sitting there brain melting as i realise destiel is going canon before my very eyes in the year of our lord 2020 and i’m witnessing a 12 year love story come to fruition like. i don’t think i’ll ever feel that alive and vindicated again

Cas started off his confession with an apology and a disclaimer, telling Dean he expected nothing from him and that he knew that their love was impossible.
He confessed to Dean believing that that moment- the moment of finally telling Dean how he felt- was the happiest he could possibly be. Which means Cas doesn’t see any way it could possibly get better from there. He is completely certain that Dean is going to react to this confession with confusion and rejection and disgust and their friendship is going to be ruined forever.
Cas goes into the Empty happily because he believes that, having had his brief moment of happiness, there is nothing left for him on Earth.
Which means.
He’s not going to try to escape the Empty. Where would he go. He’s worthless and he’s alienated everyone who makes life worth living and he should just sit in the darkness and feel bad about himself.
Which means.
When Dean comes to rescue him we are all going to get a heaping helping of five-star NothernSparrow-level Dawning Realization and I am so here for it.
That’s worth him being dead a couple episodes.
If anyone needs me I’ll be re-reading Into the Fire and ugly sobbing into my cornflakes.
I’m just saying that Cas being trapped in a nether realm utterly hopess and beleiving he belonged there, only to be rescued by someone who beleived in him more than he beleived in himself, that would add a certain symmetry to their relationship imjussaying

Cas loves Dean, and the reciprocation is something he thought he’d never have, until he realised his own love was enough to make him happy, to carry him through. Just that knowledge. And this is romantic love - different from the love Cas has already confessed in the past.
Nothing or no one can ever take that scene away from us and although the tears are streaming down my face, I’m so, so happy.
