Jack of None is far from your average experimental rock act.
The music created by this visionary band is not simply a deep dive into progressive rock that encompasses many different genres, but it is also a multidimensional artistic concept where music and storytelling blend in in truly unique ways. Jack Of None features siblings A.G. Syjuco and Maxine Syjuco, who make a really beautiful chemistry, respectively handling musical composition and lyrics. While A.G. showcases a very diverse and eclectic approach to songwriting, borrowing from different musical influences and moods, Maxine’s approach to lyricism and songwriting is aching to poetry, with words that are visually striking and deeply powerful, particularly when combined with the band’s tantalizing musical backdrop.
Last but not least, there’s another sibling contributing to this mix.
Julian Syluco performs daring guitar parts and awesome session work that adds an incredible depth to the music of the band. You could definitely say that Jack Of None is a family affair. talent runs deep within these musicians, as shown by the many accolades and acclaimed receive by the band overtime. Their recent release, Who’s listening to Van Gogh’s ear is a stunning debut album with a very enigmatic and eerie title. As some of you might know, the famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh famously lost his ear after he supposedly cut it off himself. It is very unclear whether the famous painter actually cut off his own ear or he lost it after a fight with fellow legendary painter Paul Gauguin, but it sure does make for a moving and interesting story with a mystic feel, which is exactly the atmosphere that you will find within Jack Of None’s stunning album release. The album is a collection of 12 songs that blur the lines between musical barriers and different genres in a whole new way. Opening number, Hotel Carcass is a brilliant opener that merges different musical worlds such as jazz, swing and indie rock in a whole new way. The second track, Pater, Ignosce Mihi features gravelly guitars and bone-crushing rhythm sections that reminds of genres such as thrash and death metal.
One of my favourite tracks on the entire album is Unravel Me, a song that almost makes me think of some of the most experimental moments of artists such as Tom Waits. Most of this album features a dark, deep and dense atmospheric that almost feels cinematic, as if the band were creating a very wide sonic landscape for the audience to get fully immersed into the songs, the sound and the themes of this innovative album that will not stop surprising you track by track.
Great review! Thank you!

(2016) Official Website: http://www.jackofnone.net Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/jackofnoneband Footage taken from a live performance by JACK OF NONE in Mag:Net Gallery High Street, and an unscripted performance by Maxine Syjuco at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Music by A.G. Syjuco | Lyrics and vocals by Maxine Syjuco ----------- Lyrics: MRS. STITCHER (Curse you, with devils at your feet, tap-dancing on my grounded heart) Once upon a time, there lived a girl with very big eyes. One day, her gigantic eyes popped out like buttons. Being all too apparent, Mama took her eyes, and used them to replace the missing buttons on Papa’s shirt. “I’m sorry, my daughter can’t come to the phone right now, I am busy stitching her eyes to my husband’s shirt. Could you call back later?” So, Papa walked around with his daughter’s eyes dangling from his shirt. He liked to play-- Papa liked to play with these gigantic eyes, like jackstones, or skiprope (ringed around like hulahoops) “Who is on the line, you ask? Well, my dear, my name is Mrs. Stitcher. Mrs. Stitcher. Would you like to come over for dinner?” That night, Papa’s eyes (not apparently big) popped out, too. Mama took them, and stuffed his eyes in the microwave to pop with popcorn. Wearing Papa’s shirt, she sat in front of the TV and put down the phone. (Curse you, with devils at your feet, tap-dancing on my grounded heart)
