Poached-egg Pollinator Paradise

There is a patch of poached-egg flowers growing next to my pond. Pollinating insects love it, and I love to watch them. Here are a few of this weekend's visitors.

  1. ??
  2. Mint moth
  3. ??
  4. Honeybee
  5. Rose chafer beetle
  6. Ashy mining bee

If you are familiar with bugs 1 and 3, please let me know their names! And grow this plant if you can!

sad reality of the fanfic-to-published work economy is that the weirdest people are willing to do it. that's why there's now hundreds of shitty no plot cishet hate-to-love enemies-to-lovers books that are ex reylo fanfic. and it's not even good. that's because the people who wrote book-quality steve/bucky and kirk/spock fic are too normal to think to themselves "i should get this porn published". they're too busy working in local government offices

everyone I am happy to announce that the stevebucky fanfic author I had in mind while writing this post has officially reblogged it.

It *is* a problem that charismatic species are often focused on for conservation at the expense of less charismatic but important species, but threatened species that are the subject of a lot of public outreach and education are also typically strategically selected.

I suspect that monarch butterflies are an example of this. Milkweed is a highly valuable plant for pollinators and a host plant for like. 400+ insect species. Getting people to plant it to save monarchs is funny because you're essentially finessing people into saving a ton of other insects that they wouldn't ordinarily care about

"Save the bees" isn't misguided, it's just the version of the truth you would tell a 5 year old. If a small kid asks about the colors of the rainbow you don't start explaining that visible light has wavelengths of 400-700 nanometers

A lot of people don't even know that there are different types of bees. things like planting native flowers, stopping using insecticides, etc, benefit all bees and all insects generally

ALSO

it's actually a GOOD thing to have lots of conservation efforts focusing on "Charismatic megafauna," especially apex predators

Because big animals like tigers need a LOT of space

So creating a preserve to save tigers...saves thousands of other species, because the tigers need miles and miles of habitat to live on, and that habitat needs to be healthy to support the tigers

They're called "umbrella species" and they're a great thing.

What the everliving hell?

Your not friendly reminder that cops stole more monetary value then all burglaries in 2020, and that is only dwarfed by time theft by American businesses.

I was talking to my roommate about this just tonight. In 2002 I had $34 stolen out of my suitcase by TSA.

Not much compared to $100k, you might say, and you’re correct. But you know what made this so fucking low, and why I’m still mad about it?

Also in that suitcase was my Girl Scout vest. And my stuff for summer camp, like kids’ sunscreen and kid-sized wading shoes. And a stuffed animal.

It would have been blatantly obvious they were stealing FROM A CHILD. I’d done extra chores for a month to earn that money so I could buy stuff from the camp store. It’s not much in whole amounts, but it was a lot when I was twelve, and that was MY life savings.

They literally do not care who you are. They’ll steal the pennies off a dead man’s eyes.

You should always assume that cops are also criminals. It's why they need to be given body cams and other surveillance measures.

things that the united states could do to prevent the spread of rabies & other diseases in canines that is not resorting to restricting dog importation to dogs above 6 months of age:

  • fund more low cost vaccination clinics across the country. this alone would do more than anything else on this list.
  • require that all municipalities/states require dog registration where a rabies vaccine is required (this is already the case in a majority of the united states). Additionally require additional vaccinations like dog influenza, and distemper (diseases that have been confirmed brought to the united states by dogs imported by rescue organizations). In my State part of the cost of dog registration goes to funding low cost veterinary services for those in need. Increased registration would provide increased resources for those needing low cost vaccination.
  • Fund and provide more resources for municipalities to enforce dog registration. Currently this is entirely on the budget of municipalities and in small communities enforcement officers are untrained volunteers with a small stipend because that's what we can afford. this needs to change.
  • set up a pet passport program with land bordering countries like Canada and Mexico for easier land traveling for PERSONAL, PRIVATELY OWNED pets with a well documented history.
  • I would also accept an actual veterinary check at border crossings over the 6 month rule seeing as whenever I have imported dogs whoever checks my documentation has been very blaise about looking at the actual dog. A veterinary check could prevent (some, but likely not all) untruthful situations and try to ensure the dog's age and health match any passport documentation. Note that I don't feel this is ideal, but would 1.) create jobs at crossings and import points and 2.) may prevent some of falsified paperwork dogs from crossing if that truly is such a concern.
  • Forgive student loans of veterinary students and provide resources and funding for veterinary scholarships. Veterinarians in the United States are at high risk of suicide and the industry is at a breaking point with many vets not taking new clients due to lack of resources. This prevents vaccination for many people. Forgiving existing loans and providing increased scholarships will ensure an influx of people new to the industry are not struggling and will also be more likely to stay in the industry.
  • Have clearly laid out containment agreement and importation exceptions from rabies free countries and not rely on a chat bot to answer people's importation questions with any nuance.

Importing a dog under 6 months old from this route according to the CDC is a NO:

But Importing a dog under 6 months from THESE routes is okay:

please make it make sense.

That cdc ruling is legit keeping me up at night. The more I read on it the more I feel all my future plans slipping through my fingers.
