Need y’all to know that in the 1970’s a letter to the editor was published in Daily Telegraph where the author offhandedly used the phrase “Tolkien-like gloom” to describe an area with barren trees and JRRT himself wrote back an incensed rebuttal at the use of his name in a context that suggested anything negative about trees.

“I feel that it is unfair to use my name as an adjective qualifying ‘gloom’, especially in a context dealing with trees. In all my works I take the part of trees as against all their enemies”

Because Tolkien is Tolkien, he actually directly defended the actions of all his forests and trees in this same letter I’m referencing

This is the best thing in the entire world. I love how much Tolkien loved trees and how fiercely he defended them. Here is a transcript:

Just fell down the rabbit hole of Aaron Taylor Johnson TikToks and fuckkkk someone needs to save this poor man. He’s a fucking victim and you cannot convince me otherwise. Whether or not he and his wife met when he was 7 or if they actually did meet when he was 18 she still groomed him!! He was 18!!! Barely fucking legal!! Still a fucking teenager!! I literally just turned 19 in August!! He was around my age and that blows my mind and breaks my heart because I still sometimes feel like I’m in high school!! 18!! He should’ve been out partying with friends or something not starting a family with a woman twice his age (a sick idea she probably put in his head)!! It’s sick!! He hadn’t even been born when she was 18!! He is a victim and he doesn’t know it. If he does know he’s a victim, he probably can’t escape and idk what’s worse. It’s sad to know that people were witnessing this taking place and didn’t do anything about it. It’s even worse knowing that there’s so many other people this happens/happened to. Even if he and his wife are happy or whatever it is still gross! He was a teenager!! She is a woman who has already lived half her life and trapped an innocent person starting theirs into her web. I just had to put this out there.

do we know that Tolkien wrote the elves to have alien gender norms to the real world? or that he just wrote them as having long hair because that loosely aligns with how people would have worn their hair in our version of technology period they’re living in? or just to make them seem ethereal, wise and give them an angelic quality akin to their heritage?

also, why do so many elves have short hair?? i get that that’s just a stylistic choice, so i’m not gonna add it to the list bc it’s just my opinion but really?

apart from those things, the show is…honestly just not that interesting to me. i love disa and nori, and the scenery is great, but honestly overall the show is pretty mid. i feel like it had a lot to live up to, and just didn’t really get there.

of course, i didn’t really have high expectations, and it’s amazon so i’m not really all that upset about it…
