There is an absolutely infuriating trend of city queers assuming that no queer person could possibly want to stay and live and establish a home in a rural community, and none of us could possibly have a vested interest in staying and improving the communities we already live in. They act like all of us dream of moving to Portland or Seattle or the Bay Area or some other gentrified-to-fuck, capitalist-nightmare-with-a-shitty-rainbow-facade city, and to hell with our icky redneck homes.

I'm tired of the kind of people who come on tumblr to reblog endless stuff about how much they want to live a cottagecore life, while also being aggressively classist toward poor, rural, working-class queer folks who genuinely love their homes and communities and are making the best of dangerous situations.

I'm so sorry my two-paragraph-long vent post about my personal frustrations failed to apply to every single other queer person on the entire planet.

people always get defensive when this point is brought up because it smarts to think of misogyny in media as an individual consumer’s responsibility. and in some cases it is; there are definitely people who openly do not care about female characters and relationships and have no qualms about it. But for most people, it’s a subconscious attitude that’s a direct result of misogyny and the thousands of years of teachings that women are shallower and less interesting and less complex than men. it’s DEEPLY ingrained into our society, and it DOES affect how you engage with female representation in media. (you are not immune to propaganda etc etc)

the point of statements like these is not to shame people for (unwittingly or not) subtly perpetuating patriarchal values by prioritizing male characters over female characters in their response to media. The point is to bring the phenomenon to attention so you can become aware of your own biases and work on unlearning them. Denying that it’s even a problem is entirely counterproductive.

Putting in the mental effort to prioritize female characters and relationships is beyond worth it, btw. Especially if ur wlw. I guarantee there is a plethora of fantastic female characters and ships out there that are criminally underappreciated because people aren’t willing to put in the mental work to give them the same attention that they are used to giving to male characters. It’s worth the effort!!

Train yourself to give more thought to female characters than you were taught to. Give them headcanons, imagine them in AUs, make memes about them. Support artists, writers, and other creators who make content for them by engaging with and promoting their work. Make your own content! It’s not too late to start!
