On the topic of post-Promised Day Al thoughts:

  • It takes him a long time to get out of the habit of ducking/walking sideways through doorways
  • Getting used to feeling pain again must of course have been rough (I have to imagine building up his pain tolerance again must’ve been excruciating), but personally I headcanon that the experience of coming to terms with the fact that stubbing his toes actually hurt again was a nightmare. Almost nothing makes him angrier. Winry will hear a thud followed furious, inarticulate, banshee-like yelling from the other room and assume it must be Ed, only to find a red-faced Al hopping around on one foot having stubbed his toe on a chair leg
  • Al got so used to being able to drag and/or pick up Ed and remove him from any given situation where he was being difficult that it became a habit he was completely unable to break, and what’s more hilarious is that even though he’s no longer a suit of armor twice Ed’s size, and in the time he was recovering they’ve grown to be about the same height, he can still do it. They’ll be visiting Central and Ed will be getting a little too riled-up at Mustang (now the Fuhrer himself) and Al will just sigh, shoot Hawkeye an exasperated look, and then throw his entire adult brother over his shoulder mid-sentence, deposit him (shrieking, of course) in another room, and return with a polite smile and a “sorry, you were saying?”

“If you have time to watch Netflix you have time for a side hustle” my side hustle is relaxing so that my body and brain can heal from by this nose-to-the-grindstone bullshit. I refuse to feel guilty for being a human with the need to relax sometimes. my side hustle is no.

whenever i hear about hustle culture i always think about this post on r/antiwork

Gonna be putting these screenshots here as a basic lesson on how NOT to be an ASSHOLE REVIEWER

Tip #1: This author ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT engage with anyone who goes around giving "DON'T READ THIS FIC" recommendations to others

Tip #2: That Hit-to-Kudos ratio is a BAD standard on which to judge any fic by and anyone using it (and proclaiming it as THE standard upon which) to read/recommend fics is an idiot

Tip #3: If you gonna be thinking this author thinks "everything I do in a good story is awesome and even the tiny stuff that means nothing to the story... and turns people off accidentally must be kept!" simply means you DO NOT HAVE A CLUE about why the author chose to use that scenario to bring the two lead characters closer. One's idiocy should not be passed off to the writer

Tip #4: All those backhanded compliments are NOT compliments at all

Tip #5: As a reviewer, you are judged by a set of standards as you would a writer. This is AO3, you don't know the author, your best bet is you DO NOT leave unsolicited criticism that exposes you for the over-privileged, self-entitled idiot that you are. That obvious need for attention and validation disguised as put-downs to make oneself seem bigger? Not a good look

Tip #6: Spare us the ESSAYS. They're just gonna be DELETED faster than you wrote them

Tip #7: Apparently, the reviewer is an author as well?? Dear oh dear. Always remember, what goes around comes around 😉 If I need writing advice from anyone who has only ever posted ONE fic in their AO3 profile, then I shall ask politely 😆

Holy shit. Yeah, no. This is an atrocious, entitled, pompous way to speak to someone providing free fic for entertainment.

Also that hit-to-kudos thing can die in a Fucking fire.

Oh, and? Fic writers talk to each other. We post shitty comments like this in our discords to gawp at in disbelief, and we ask recipients for the username of the commenter so we can pre-emptively block and mute the archive user.

If you're this much of an entitled tit in the comments of a fic, it's what you deserve, to be honest.

*SIGHS*

Another AO3 app that's pretending to be official when it's not (or at least isn't making it clear its unofficial.) They're using AO3's name and logo, and embedding ads.

There is no official AO3 app

Someone else is gathering your data, potentially your log in information etc and making use of it how they please. (They say they're not but their privacy policy says otherwise)

They are making money from the ads without the fic writer's consent.

They've also rated it Pegi 3 (which is ludicrous)

Please, even if you care about nothing else, for the safety of your data, please don't use this app. Certainly don't give it your AO3 log in details.

I've told AO3 that it's infringing on its copyright. I will be requesting they remove access of my work as I do not consent to my creative content being used to generate ad revenue for them.

I will be reporting it as incorrectly rated.

The only email address I can find is Narusta@gmail.com which is included in their privacy policy, and boboxway13@gmail.com as their developer.

There is a banner up on the site, too - so all readers know of the problem.

I have some invite codes left ifnpeople want to create an account!

Yesterday AO3 was inundated with spam comments accusing authors of using AI to write their fics, and today it's porn gifs. AO3 has had to turn off guest-commenting, which I have never seen before

If u want to write a story about a character that’s just you but hotter with a dark twisted backstory and magical powers and a pet falcon or something, I think u should just go ahead and do that. Who’s gonna stop you? The government?? Fuck the police.

There are currently ~2300 works in AO3 tagged with "Created Using Generative AI"

I'll be upfront with my opinion, which mirrors my opinion in regards to my field: using AI will only hasten your own obsolescence. The point of fanfiction is not to crank out fics, but rather to enjoy the hobby and communities of writing and fandom.

To quote Neil Gaiman: Why would I read something noone bothered to write?

What @megaraye said. AI is so anti fandom it's repulsive. It completely misses the idea of passion and lands squarely in the "doing it for the clicks" territory.

Miss me by a MILE with that shit.

Alright, to ao3's soon to be arriving Wattpad Refugees, a basic guide to general user culture:

1.) Unlike Wattpads vote system that let's you like each chapter, the ao3 equivalent kudos only allows one per work. Everyone is generally quietly annoyed about this. To engage with each chapter, you're heavily encouraged to comment. Trust me, it makes people's day.

2.) Ao3 has no algorithm. By default it's latest updated work first. You can find things to your taste through searches, filters and tags.

3.) 'No archive warnings apply' and 'user has chosen not to use archive warnings' mean two very different things. No archives warnings means the work is free from any content that could require a warning tag (character death, graphic depictions of violence, non-con, etc). User has chosen not to use archive warnings means it could contain any of the warning content, be it hasn't been explicitly tagged. Treat it like an allergen. No archive warnings apply is allergen free. User has chosen not to use archive warnings, may contain traces or whole chunks of the allergen. If you're likely to have a bad reaction, maybe don't take the risk.

4.) Speaking of warnings, ao3 has very few restrictions on the type of work that's allowed. Whatever your personal thoughts or feelings on that are, thats how the site is. You're likely to run across some dark subject matters and a lot of people are uncomfortable with reading that. You're well within your rights not like these works and have your opinion on whether they should be allowed, but harassing the authors of such works (or any works) is more likely to come back on you than them. Ao3 operates on a strong policy of 'don't like, don't read'. Use the tagging system to your full advantage to only engage with the kind of works you want to see.

We look forward to welcoming you all and seeing the fantastic works you create. Happy writing!

mfers will say "im against book banning in schools and libraries!" and then turn around and say ao3 needs to be censored

The people arguing to ban and/or remove content from Ao3 are completely and utterly convinced that censorship is different when they do it.

If you migrate from Wattpad to Ao3....

I'm fucking begging you to actually tag your works properly AND DO NOT CENSOR WHAT YOU WRITE OR TAG !!! Terms like "unalive" "sewer slide" and other censored terms are NOT welcome here, and you wont be punished by the algorithm for talking about death and blood and stuff BECAUSE THERES IS NO ALGORITHM ! Also making place holders IS NOT ALLOWED BY AO3 TOS. It just clogs up the archive for nothing, if you do this, thats a sure way to get your stuff reported. Please learn how Ao3 works, its nothing like Wattpad.
