Found this while digging around for resources in future posts. Thought I'd share with you all. Have brand new drawing kit, new posts incoming!
i’d just like to say fuck you to every middle-aged straight doctor who viewer who’s going off about why do shows need to focus on characters being gay or straight or old who never focused on this stuff or i only believe in human rights why do we need to see sexualities okay fuck off and shut the hell up, my biggest hero as a child was rose tyler to the extent that my first counsellor used her to help me think about how i could confront my fears, young me was convinced the doctor was going to show up in my garden one day, i lived for this show and for so long it defined who i was as a person. do you think i would have tried to desperately to convince myself i was straight if i’d seen rose tyler, who in hindsight i was in love with in the most gay way possible, kiss a girl? if a woman had bought martha jones a drink just once and told her she looked pretty? if donna’s fiancé had been a woman? do you think i’d have insisted to myself and everyone i knew that i wasn’t gay even though i could barely hold a coherent conversation around the prettiest girl in my class? i don’t know!!! but it could have made a real difference to me. okay, sure, we had jack, but he a) wasn’t a series regular and b) wasn’t a woman. sure, there’s river and clara but their sexualities are only hinted at and often played for laughs. sure, there’s jenny and vastra, but they’re not regular companions and btw, one’s a lizard. just give me this. let me have this canonically openly gay companion without making it all about you because i GUARANTEE while you’re sitting there asking why it even matters, every gay little girl who grew up watching and loving doctor who could write you this same post, and so many gay little girls across the country are going to have a main character who’s like them and for us, for them, it matters. shut the fuck up.
Whenever I get worn out by how women are depicted in comics, I start scratching out ideas for my comic, Carrie and the Magnetism. I draw that, and I feel a lot better.
@napalmnacey Are you still writing this story? I would love to read about these women.
Yep. I have ADHD that's been untreated until recently so the going was super slow, but once I get a routine in place I can finally draw and ink the scripts I've written. Also, I changed the back story of the leading character, Carrie. She is now of Papua New Guinea descent, cause who needs another blonde, white superhero? I can share the new sketches with you if you like!
You know...
People come for the art posts. They stay for the random shit I accidentally post here because my iPad client for tumblr keeps flipping blogs without telling me.
Calling all Marvel fan-creators
You’ve heard the bullshit. Of course you have.
I am proposing that we make 1 June 2016 a DAY OF JEWISH COMICS. Jewish people created this industry and the beloved, nigh-immortal characters still so popular to this day. Let’s fight the antisemitism of the current moneyed creators and give back to the community that has given us so much by putting out fanart and fanfic that returns Jewish characters and influence to the (positive) spotlight.
DC fans are welcome too! Y’all want to put out some Superman celebrating Purim or Batman protecting a synagogue or Harley Quinn taking a giant hammer to the current Cap writers, GO FOR IT. We are here to show that Jewish people have, and have always had, a place in these comics and this giant unwieldy mega-fandom, whether their home of choice is Avengers Tower or the city of Gotham. (Massively Multiplayer Marvel/DC Jewish crossover? FRICK YEAH.)
Folks who may not have fanworks to contribute, but want to take part: as with any celebration of Judaism, we can expect the tag to garner jackasses who have nothing better to do with their time than hate on people they’ve never met. You can be a superhero in your own right by patrolling the celebration tag and doing a block/report on any usernames you see trying to spread antisemitism or make the tag unsafe for Jewish users.
To add fanworks, use the tag #jewishcomicsday. Please REBLOG and spread the word, and let’s take comics back from people who want to make them a bastion of hate!
Signal BOOOOST!
I feel very strongly about this issue. I am beyond angry at Marvel’s bullshit regarding Captain America and I am reblogging on CAC because I believe it is so vitally important that people speak out about this. Please join me in doing what you can to protest Marvel’s fuckery.
Apologies for the personal blog.

Why you shouldn't be afraid to alter your O.C.'s design if you want to
If anyone ever doubts that validity of changing their character design, think about this. It took roughly 2 or so years before Bugs Bunny even became close to how we know him nowadays, and a further 7 more years for him to have his current familiar body shape
It took from 1938 to 1948 until we had Bugs as we know him as he is today. In other words, changing your O.C.’s design (that is if you want to) is perfectly natural and you shouldn’t be worried about it!
For all those artists out there who want to know more about color picking, here’s a belated Christmas gift to y'all!
shading colour tips
hey yall its me the Art Mom™ to help you shade pretty
rule 1: DO NOT SHADE WITH BLACK. EVER. IT NEVER LOOKS GOOD.
- red- shade with a slightly darker shade of purple
- orange- slightly darker and more saturated shade of red
- yellow- i think like..a peach could work but make it a really light peach
- green- shade with darker and less saturated shade of blue or teal
- blue- shade with purple
- purple- a shade thats darker than the purple you’re using and maybe a little pink (MAYBE blue)
- pink- darker shade of red
- white- a really light lavender or blue..or i guess any really light colour??
- black- okay listen dont use pure black to colour anything unless you want to leave it with flat colours because you cant really shade black lol
- grey- a slightly darker shade of purple or blue (less saturated)
- brown- slightly darker and less saturated shade of purple or red
aaaaand thats all i got lol. let me know if there is anything i should add to this list!!
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ THIS!!!! ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Coincidentally, I already use these exact techniques. I think these shades really help make colors pop!
As a bonus, I always stray away from coloring with any pure blacks or greys. Heavily desaturated blues, teals, and browns do the job better, IMO.
Save the color black for outlines if you want a real “comic” look. Stay away from coloring with black or grey until you draw something that’s 100% absent of light (black) or 100% absent of color (grey). When you finally use those colors for their intended themes, they’ll have a greater effect.
I’m gonna chime in and say these rules are great, but another great way to know what colour to shade with is to know what colour your light is! Your shadow colour will be the complementary (opposite on the colour wheel) to your light colour.
It’s outside and it’s a sunny day? Your light is going to be warm, so your shadows are going to be cool! When you’re shading, make sure your highlights shift towards warm (yellow) and your shadows towards cool (purple).
If it’s indoors and you have cool, white light (remember that white light has a blue tint), your highlights should be cool and your shadows should be warm.
Just as you shouldn’t shade with black or grey, try to avoid creating highlights with white - in other words, instead of taking a red and then making a lighter, whiter version of that red for the highlights, think about what colour your light is!
Very good advice.
Congratulations!!!!!!
Thank you! You know what’s bigger congratulations?I GOTS ME A CINTIQ YO. It’s way old and second hand but it’s SO NICE and I shall draw like the WIND!
SO SORRY
So I installed the tumblr app on my iPad and didn’t realise that you had to reset where you posted things each time you posted, and accidentally personal blogged on this blog. I deleted it all, except the story about my Dad cause that’s awesome.
Also, I GOT A CINTIQ! I mean, it’s a model from the 00s and it’s second hand but I don’t care. If I can get results on a DS I can get a result on this. It’ll streamline my workflow like woah!
Cheers, N.
And I posted this to my personal blog. IRONY.
My Dad is weird.
Yesssss
Awesome studies!
Whoo, super long nose tutorial! I’m sure there’s heaps I didn’t mention in this but this is generally how I approach it - the main thing is to check out references and try and draw different noses, it’ll help you create more diverse characters and have fun with it without being afraid of drawing the nose (since it’s genuinely one of my favourite things to draw).

Very good tute!
