Mark Sheppard - Dutch Comic Con 2018

Someone who didn’t watch the show asked Mark what was it about, here’s his answer. I must remind you this is from 2018, long time after he left it, and still, he got over all those problems and gave that person a reason to watch, a nice one. So come here and tell me this man isn’t a sunshine, and I will have to fight you, cause I couldn’t be more in love with him.

There is no us. You’re here for one reason. That’s to hand me the Blade.

you can hear his heart breaking

And when we’re done talking about that scene, can we talk about this one? Because Dean didn’t have any reason to tell Crowley he’d lied to him. Cain was dead – how would Crowley ever find out Dean had lied to him? When Crowley said “you lied to me” about returning the Blade, Dean could have said “I don’t trust you with it” or “I don’t trust you to keep it from me” or even “if you’re not careful, one day you’re gonna find youself at the other end of it.” Dean could have said any of that.

Instead, he told Crowley he lied. He told him that because he knew it would hit the hardest, hurt the worst. Break the trust building between them, break the idea of that “us” that Crowley alone clung to. It would push Crowley away, keep him at an even greater distance – from the boys, from Dean himself.

And maybe Dean needed to push Crowley away because it was a rejection of Dean himself, of what he had been that summer, and Crowley embodied that. Maybe it was pushing away that moral ambiguity of demons in general, of the darkness, that in the grip of the Mark and after his fight with Cain, Dean felt acutely aware of and drawn towards. And maybe – maybe it had to do with Cain’s threat, his warning. That first, Dean would kill Crowley. That killing Crowley, however justified, would be the first step down that road to Dean killing his brother. And the best way to ensure that didn’t happen wasn’t for Dean to say “I need you to stay away” or “I’m scare of how easy this might be” or even “I don’t want to hurt you” – for Crowley’s own sake as much as Sam’s. It was to say “I don’t give a damn about you.” Better to break Crowley’s heart, than stab him in it with the Blade.

Cain’s back. He’s gone dark, and I need the Blade.

Can we talk about this series of scenes in the middle of season 10? We can talk about what a pivotal moment this is in Dean’s and Crowley’s relationship, and how it’s a tipping point away from rather than towards Crowley becoming an ally of the Winchesters?

Because Dean didn’t have to lie. He didn’t have to. He lied because he thought that Crowley would only respond to a threat against himself. Because that was how Dean, and the others, still perceived Crowley – as someone who was only out for himself. But Crowley was deep in it by this point. Deep into the cure and deep into changing Hell and himself so “that it might matter”, deep into that “us” that was him and Dean.

And if Dean hadn’t been so deep into the Mark himself, falling slowly into the darkness while Crowley was edging his way up out of it, he might have seen that, understood it. He might have known he could have asked Crowley, rather than manipulated him. Could have said “Cain’s got a kill list” and “there are innocent lives at stake, and I can’t let that happen,” or “Collette asked him to stop – like you said, she asked him to stop. But he’s started again. And if he won’t stop, I gotta make him stop,” which Crowley would have understood, because he was the one who knew what Cain’s love asked of him. Because Crowley knows Dean in the darkness of the Mark needs to be asked to stop, just like Crowley in his own damnation is waiting, waiting, for Dean ask to him to stop.

Dean could have said, “because I’m asking you to” and Crowley would have still brought him the Blade. Against Crowley’s own better judgement, against the warnings of Rowena, he would have done it. Because Dean asked. Because it was Dean asking. Just like he would have stopped if it was Dean doing the asking. But Dean didn’t asked. Dean lied. He chose to keep Crowley at arm’s length rather than pulling him further into the fold. He could have made Crowley an ally, but chose to treat him like an unreliable asset instead.
