being a crafter is so weird because it's like. here's a necklace that between materials and minimum wage labour cost me £1 to make. you will happilly pay me £6 for it because the same thing in claire's is £15. here's a blanket that between materials and half minimum wage labour cost me £700 to make. you will tell me to fuck off because you can buy a blanket in a shop for £100.

lmao yeah like babe i need you to understand that the materials to make that necklace you saw in claires would cost about 2% of what the necklace does. pennies. literal pennies.

...on the other hand enough yarn to knit that h&m cardigan costs twice as much as the cardigan

most of the notes on this post are still only latching on to the "fibre arts is undervalued and fast fasion is evil" part which like. yes and yes but what makes this a really WEIRD situation is that the flipside is also true and logically shouldn't be

you can get materials to make costume jewellery (at a much higher price than a big company like claire's would pay), undercut them by half on the final price and still be making "this feels like a scam" levels of profit on it

if claire's priced their jewellery the way h&m priced clothes nothing in that shop except like... bags maybe? would cost more than £5

if h&m priced clothing with as much markup as claire's put on jewellery they'd sell jumpers for £300

the other half of this is just as relevant

one thing being pretty universally hugely overpriced and the other being pretty universally hugely underpriced meant they ended up roughly equivalent (at least closer than they have any right being)

so now people not only think that a) making clothes is very easy and quick and cheap if you know how but also b) that making costume jewellery is some highly skilled arcane practice and not something anybody with a pair of pliers and funtional hand could learn in 5 minutes
