HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY? (A) POOR WAYFARING STRANGER (B) MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW
Avatar

23. would your muse be good at recognizing their partner's needs right away, or would it take some time?

Avatar

odysseus is perceptive, but he isn't a mind reader. odysseus is a hard person to get to know (and to love), and he likes partners who are hard to get to know; the challenge of learning what they'll respond to is a large part of what draws him in. part of his attentiveness as a partner is that he wants to spend the necessary time together. which is the tragedy of his having been separated from his wife for so long, but you can tell he put the work in from how intimately they handle one another when he returns.

he knows that it will take time, that a good and well-matched relationship is meant to take time, and he trusts the process.

Avatar

does your muse have an ideal “type”? (does it start with a j?)

Avatar

actually he is a sapiosexual, so to your second question no lol

physical type doesn't matter that much to him; he is fundamentally the kind of person who is going to be obnoxious about how it's what's on the inside (a keen mind) that counts. he values, and also gets turned on by, someone who can match wits with him. in short,

julie @glacierfront may not be conventionally "clever" but she is as stubborn as he is and will argue him into a state of frustration, which is much the same thing

The feeling never goes away, but it’s one of those rising tides that lifts all ships — if the ship, perhaps, is grief, and if lifting it atop the waves of consciousness is what brings it suddenly to mind. It can happen in the middle of a day. Middle of a word. Middle of a song. And Odysseus has to stop, releasing a long exhale.

His right hand falls slack from the guitar.

“Forgive me. I don’t think I can sing anymore.”

His scar is smooth. Bumpy. Her fingers are cold.

She stares at her fingers, and then at Argos' fur underneath her, as he talks. She listens — truly listens, instead of thinking of how best to make fun of him, as she often does — and slowly.

Slowly.

The cog finds its teeth.

Her ears feel very warm. Her arm is starting to tingle. She feels, in her index finger against his skin, the need to twitch. She channels all of her energy into not twitching. Because twitching would be — weird.

What's not weird, to her, is saying, slow: "Do. You mean." A long beat. "Like." Another. "Reincarnation?"

He can't tell yet if she believes him, but she is at least awake now. The adrenaline rushing through him now belongs on the battlefield, not in private conversation; he's sure she can feel his heartbeat in his palm. He lets go of her hand. He means to let go of her hand. He's still holding her hand there, against his scar, her slender fingers overlaid with his rough ones.

"We believed in rebirth. For the great heroes, at least. If you returned from the underworld three times, and in each life earned enough glory to find your way to Elysium, you would be given a place on the Isle of the Blessed — the most holy heaven, you might say. An eternity of tranquillity, instead of wandering the Fields of Asphodel among the other voiceless ghosts." He may have forgotten every face of every person he loved, but he will never forget what he saw in the underworld while he was alive. His own mother drinking from a sacrifice, unable to embrace him. The picture he paints is grim, he knows that. And yet it's bitter on his tongue to add, "But I was told that one had to ask for it. Ha."

The way her eyes dart to his, wide, isn't a betrayal of fear or anxiety or anything of a negative nature at all.

Rather, she is thinking: what the hell? Was her name supposed to sound that hot on purpose? Or? Is he supposed to be scary or not, right now?!?!?

A flicker of a glance away. And then back. And then: "It's not. Like. Something you have to convince me of. Like. If you —"

Right? Name changes aren't just for those questioning their gender identity, she thinks. (Not that she knows if Odysseus is questioning it or not. She thinks he is not. She's pretty sure he is not.) People should be able to... experiment as they wish.

And she is nothing if not a supportive ally!

"If you're Odysseus, then you're Odysseus, dude."

"No," he says, shaking his head and kind of laughing, but in a broken-sounding way. "No, I don't get to choose. I was named Odysseus by my mother's father. It means to be hated. He had enough enemies to pass some on to me."

Lifting his leg back onto the couch, Odysseus rolls his pants to the knee to show her the old, puckered gouge that runs from his calf up his thigh. He takes her hand, stretching her arm across Argos, and puts her fingers back where they were. Was it only a few minutes ago? "When I was a boy, he took me hunting on the mountain. A boar's tusk gave me this. It's the only scar I still have.

"I left my wife and child to go to war for a woman whose name you forgot. I fought for ten years. I was lost — another ten years — but I made my way home and I met my son as a man full-grown and I could never make up that time, never. But they sang songs about me, and the songs became poems, and the poems became a story. That was long after I died. And still, I cannot get back the time. I only have the story."

Odysseus' sigh strums the chord inside her threatening to unravel, and what it becomes is a small spiral of anxiety. It should be enough to know Odysseus now and not be anxious at a sigh. But she knew her mother longer, and with each sigh from her an omen.

"Okay," she says, easy. "You can be Odysseus." She watches Argos, the cute, happy thing, and reaches out a tentative hand when he squirms closer to sniff. "Do you have a last name, too, or."

"Julie."

Says it tired, affectionate, commanding. His tone distracts the dog momentarily from Julie's hand, but Odysseus is only looking at her, now.

"Don't humor me as if you're talking to a child. Disbelieve me, or call me a liar, but know that I intend—I want—to be believed."

It's Argos' paws on the couch that make her move, gently lifting her legs away from Odysseus to give him more space, to tuck herself into the corner of the couch like a pretzel. She looks at Argos. She looks at Odysseus. She squints.

(There's a small part of her that feels that cliff edge cutting into her heel. A small part that she ignores.)

"First of all. He's not. Like. Fuckin'. Dumb. Or poor. And second."

Second.

Without having, really, any way to determine that he is in fact telling the most straightforward truths that he has ever said to her, like, ever, she says, lightly: "Do you want to, like. Stop talking in riddles? Or...?" Because she is not getting it. Her fault, really.

The dog wastes no time climbing into the space Julie leaves, and Odysseus sighs, half in disappointment, half from the relief of the dog's more familiar weight replacing hers on his thigh.

Is this what he deserves for lying about who he is so many times, in so many places, in so many ways? Maybe. Yeah, maybe. But it's been the necessary lie: you have to live. No matter what, you have to live.

Odysseus has never trucked in deserving, anyway. It only makes him want more for her to understand.

"When I talk to you in riddles, you should pay more attention. How many times have you heard me perform? Nobody was a riddle. Odysseus is just my name," he says again, and again.

repost and rate your muse's traits out of 10 in each category !

★  ⸻   COMPASSION: 2/10. the other 8 is his ruthlessness score. what he does feel, which he might more easily admit to as pity, is highly selective and likely to be quashed if inconvenient.

★  ⸻   BITTERNESS: 10/10. this is not the life he wanted.

★  ⸻   HAPPINESS: 5/10. depression equilibrium. most of the time he's just getting by, but he's not an active danger to himself.

★  ⸻   POLITENESS: 8/10, but polite as in politician. he is very good at figuring out what to say to put someone at ease, and he will use that to learn about them and get what he wants. if he provokes someone, it's just as purposeful. survival skill, not sign of respect.

★  ⸻   MORALITY: 2/10. for awhile i had his alignment down as "chaotic boat," which. well. he follows a few basic principles in life, and they're things like "don't treat a guest poorly (unless they catcall your wife)" and "child murder is bad if it's my child" and "don't do something you can't get away with unless you're prepared to accept the consequences." he's a lot less likely to commit crimes against humanity in his modern reincarnation, because the culture has changed, but not necessarily his core values.

★  ⸻   CHIVALRY: 2/10. has never heard of courtly love, will not come to the defense of the helpless, finds duels to the death stupid and wasteful. but, at least, down to murder anyone who catcalls his wife.

★  ⸻   PRIDE: 7/10. i was going to rate this higher, but throughout his wanderings we see odysseus gradually more willing to sacrifice pride for survival, and he's still in that mode. it's there, it wants to devour him biblically, but he knows its likeness.

★  ⸻   HONESTY: 2/10. i'm not rating him a 1 only because he is capable of it more often than people think, but even then there are a lot of shades of grey between outright falsehood and total truth.

★  ⸻   BRAVERY: 9/10. like, he's not going to throw himself into a fight that has nothing to do with him, but that's not because he's a coward, it's because he's selfish. he will do what needs to be done. and he'll do it with minimal bitching and moaning.

★  ⸻   RECKLESSNESS: 3/10. he has learned from his mistakes in this arena, but he's made more than a few. his legendary patience is a studied trait — he doesn't lack emotional impulse.

★  ⸻   AMBITION: 10/10. and he'll get what he wants, too.

★  ⸻   LOYALTY: ??/10. canonical backstabber and absent father, but also canonical in fucking up his chance to dodge the draft because of his son and rejecting a goddess to return to his own wife, family, and homeland. how do you rate someone whose personal loyalty is both intensely selfish and overruling?

★  ⸻   LOVE: 5/10. not open-hearted. his ghosts live in there and he won't risk letting them out.

★  ⸻   SENSE OF FAMILY: 10/10.

★  ⸻   ATTRACTIVENESS: 7/10. hot but an acquired taste.

★  ⸻   AGILITY: 7/10. he's strong, dexterous, and has impressive physical endurance but he isn't superhuman in any way.

★  ⸻   SEX DRIVE: 6/10. yeah odysseus fucks but it's not something he actively looks for. with that said, highly context dependent; can skyrocket in an instant if someone is engaging him intellectually because he's a weird little sapiosexual or whatever.

Menelaus snorts. "There are other things that would come to mind as faults long before that when it comes to you, Odysseus," he replies.

He shakes his head. "No, but I'm not going to pretend everyone's going to get along after the decision's made and hope for the best," he says. He glances at Odysseus. "No. I would not. Why would I? Our families are already united through my brother. I know I'm not the top choice; I don't see that as a bruise to my ego. Sometimes I believe you think I'm stupid."

Avatar
whinedarksea

"Faults such as a certain proneness to believing other people are stupid?" His mouth twitches. "I hope you'll forgive me. It is not your ego I worry for. Not everyone shares your goodwill," he says, and means it. "I'm sure you would do better to stay out of such terrible company."

How long has he known Menelaus and Agamemnon? Longer than anyone else here. He doesn't believe Menelaus lacks any of the faculties the gods give to men, but he would call him open-hearted. Full of feeling. Stubborn. Why would you? He's not sure what Menelaus would become if his passion were stoked.

Odysseus' hand drops to his knee. As he surveys the rest of the hall, he taps, taps, taps. "Individually, there are many men here I like, or at least could come to like. But I never trust a crowd with my life. I do not have fortunate connections to duck behind, when things start flying." And he is not resigned, either.
