Sherlock’s head tilted, his eyes bright and silver in the dark as they moved over John’s face. John looked back at him, letting the overwhelming emotion inside him shine through the connection, unafraid of what he might receive in return. Knowing that he would be safe, that Sherlock would understand.

This is quite possibly one of my favourite Johnlock AUs 🥰 Over time, I’ve developed an incredibly soft spot for beekeeper!Sherlock and the boys living in the countryside, which is the premise of lean into a loved body. The setting just seems to lend itself effortlessly to softness and domesticity, two things I think John and Sherlock have more than earned.

A slightly tangential fun fact before I start the rec in earnest: I read this fic for the first time near the beginning of this year, back when I was just re-dipping my toes into Johnlock, and by the time I was properly sucked back into Johnlock, the author’s name had slipped my mind even as the story stayed with me. A bit later, I stumbled upon @simplyclockwork and promptly fell in love with basically everything they’ve ever written (I think hired gun—an absolutely 🤯🤯 read—was my introduction [after lean into a loved body, of course] to their work). I did not realise that lean into a loved body was also a simplyclockwork creation, and when I found out it was, I had a delighted moment of “oh of course” 😂

Anyway, on to the rec! lean into a loved body retains many, if not all, of the characteristics that make John and Sherlock, John and Sherlock. By putting them in the countryside, the author has managed to peel away the distractions, so to speak, of all the hustle and bustle of London, with Mrs. Hudson living right underneath and the constant consultations with NSY or private clients. What we’re left with, is a beautifully detailed look into John and Sherlock and their developing relationship, John especially, since this fic is told through his POV.

All of that’s not to say that there isn’t any element of mystery/crime-solving in lean into a loved body, because there is. I won’t say much more because I don’t want to spoil anything, but rest assured, our favourite consulting detective (and beekeeper) is still very much in possession of his detective-y skills and inclinations😉

What really stands out in lean into a loved body though, is the way it depicts John’s mental health. Just returned from his third tour from Afghanistan, wounded in action and discharged from duty, John is very much struggling with PTSD and all the ways it makes itself known. Written empathetically and realistically, this fic integrates conversations and acknowledgements (both explicit and implicit) about mental health with grace and sensitivity.

The dynamic between John and Sherlock here is so compelling. From their first meeting—that echoes their canon meeting so sweetly—the spark between them is apparent. Sherlock sees John in that unflinchingly honest way that only Sherlock can, and the impact of that on John is beautiful to read. John is very much at the start of his recovery here, particularly in terms of his mental health, and watching him slowly shed his self-loathing and isolation under the reassuring understanding and respect (and adoration, even if John only figures that out later) Sherlock gives him is immensely satisfying and leaves a warm feeling in your chest. John’s mental health doesn’t miraculously fix itself because of Sherlock, because that’s not how it works. But a little unconditional support and love, the kind Sherlock gives freely to John, goes a long way in easing the path to recovery, and lean into a loved body encapsulates this really well.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk a little about the lively cast of side characters in this story. The author has a wonderful knack of tweaking tiny details here and there, but keeping the essence of the characters intact, so that when you read this fic, all of them seem at once familiar and fresh! We have background Mystrade, with Mycroft as Mycroft and Lestrade with the local police force. Lestrade also brews beer, which feels incredibly in-character for him😂 Irene, Molly and Kate too make an appearance, all three living together (!!) on a nearby ranch. Mrs. Hudson, an ever-present fixture, is as motherly and fond of Sherlock and John as she always is, and even Billy makes an appearance!

A gentle read with generous writing that does justice to every moment, lean into a loved body is sure to worm it’s way into your heart 🐝🍯

(And if you’re in the mood for more snippets set in the same universe as lean into a loved body, check out the rest of the fics in the beehives and honeycomb series!)

So you know.

This might be the real one, y’all.

Hi Steph!

(Large text here, sorry in advance)

I’ve been writing fanfiction since the end of 2019 approx. The thing is, it was always for small fandoms, which means I could read almost every fanfic to try to come up with an original idea.

I saw Sherlock for the first time this year, and like anyone with two eyes and a bit of common sense, I started to ship Johnlock. But then I went to AO3 and and the amount of fanfics hit me like a truck, and I feel like any idea I think of has already been done, and people are going to think it's just a copy.

But then again, I really want to write to these two sweeties, and I don't know what to do.

Hey Nonny!!!

WELCOME TO THE FANDOM, WE LOVE YOU.

That said... Nonny, it's TOTALLY OKAY to "write something other people have already done". I mean... my entire blog's survival hinges on having a TONNE of fics to rec of similar topics!!! HAHAH!! If there wasn't, I would not be able to make the lists I do!

But you know what we don't have?

YOUR INTERPRETATION!

And we want it!! Trust me, the Johnlock fandom THIRSTS for as many of the same type of fic as they can get, and like... we LOVE our authors SO MUCH. Bed-sharing? YES PLEASE. Fake husbands? UH YEAH! Winglock AU where one is an alien? SURE, never seen that before, PLEASE!!

And Nonny, I am NOT trying to be facetious. I am 100% serious. You write it, there will be at least ONE person who will go "YES PLEASE MORE OF THAT!!!"

I promise you, Nonny, there's no such thing as too much in this fandom. A lot of our authors are known for the way they write AUs, or bedsharing, or case fics. It's literally open season on topics here. <3

AND if you DO write a fic for Sherlock/Johnlock, please let me know, I will be happy to promote it for you! <3 My Lovelies and Lurkers™ LOVE new fics, I get at LEAST one ask a week for "new authors" or "new fics for _insert genre here_".

So PLEASE, write something, even if it's just a "221B ficlet" (in our fandom, it's a story where it's exactly 221 words and the last word starts with 'B'), a 5K story or a huge epic saga! We'll be here to yum it up! <3

I second what she said. I have read so many iterations of the same concept and loved them all! Fake relationship? Sold! Bed sharing? Never gets old. Kidnapped? I’ll take it. Sports AU? That’s my jam! The point is, it’s all fine.

Several months ago though, I was thinking someone should do a Top Gun AU. So there’s that if someone needs inspiration 😉

Thank you for adding this image description! Just wanted to clarify that it’s not stylised, but actual Middle English. The text is from The Canterbury Tales.

Okay, had to track it down. It’s from the Reeve’s Tale, and it’s a description of a 20yo young woman:

This wenche thikke and wel y-growen was, With camuse nose and yën greye as glas; With buttokes brode and brestes rounde and hye, But right fair was hir heer, I wol nat lye.

In modern English (had to look up “camuse”, so that’s as good as my source, but I know the rest)

This wench was thick and well-grown With a pug nose and eyes grey as glass; With buttocks broad and breasts round and high, But right fair was her hair, I will not lie.

The fact that Chaucer had “big butt” and “I will not lie” within two lines of each other is causing me disproportionate amusement. Also the fact that “this wenche thikke” works equally well in Middle English and in modern slang.

A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their lover’s once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.

this fucks me up every single time

I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds I’ve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.

After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, “is love a feeling? Or is it a choice?” We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, we’d never have a lasting relationship of any sort.

She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.

Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the “feeling of love” had vanished or faded and they weren’t happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.

The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.

The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.

Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. I’ve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. I’ve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.

I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.

This is so fucking important and I think it’s something I needed right now

my favourite new arrival today to the Suez Canal party is this incredibly conspicuous Russian warship labelled as an oil tanker that’s just anchored amongst the stranded cargo ships. chillin.

realized what the map screenshot is reminding me of glgkdkkdkfjdksj

“russian warship 545 is unhappy”

“well life isn’t fucking fair is it russian warship 545”

Okay this just got INTERESTING

So I went back to check on my pal Russian Warship 545 (registration name KOLA), and being unable to find the red dot in the area, thought it had moved on. Curious as to when and where to, I ran a search on Vesselfinder for the name “Russian Warship 545”.

No results found.

“Okay, that’s fair. Maybe you can’t search for naval vessels by name. National security and all.” I said to myself. Then I remembered that I’d screenshotted the ID number (see above), so I ran a search for that instead.

This is when shit got weird.

So I mentioned just now that while the vessel showed up earlier today under the AIS tracking title “Russian Vessel 545”, the legal registration name listed at the bottom of its details page was “KOLA”. This isn’t that weird in and of itself — I was poking around home on the map earlier today, and found Canadian naval vessels with tracking titles like “Canadian Warship 707” and then the actual vessel name (HMCS FancyName or what have ye) listed as the registration name along with the flag country.

I mentioned also that I couldn’t find Russian Warship 545’s distinctive red dot (red is the colour for search and rescue, coast guard, and naval vessels in Vessel Finder) in the Red Sea anchorage field outside the canal when I went to check up on it.

So imagine my surprise when I type the ID number for “Russian Warship 545” into the search, and am told IT IS STILL LOCATED IN THE RED SEA ANCHORAGE.

Huh???

But not ONLY that.

It has now been switched to an ORANGE tanker vessel dot, and is showing up with “KOLA” as its AIS tracking name, looking for all intents and purposes like a regular oil tanker:

Except for the fact that when you open the details page on Vessel Finder, the image attached is VERY MUCH STILL A RUSSIAN WARSHIP:

And the specs and details are all the same as earlier, including being owned by what is still listed (due to the 1967 manufacturing date) as, I shit you not, “Soviet Navy”:

However!!!

On further investigation via Marine Tracker, I’ve found what seems to be a much less “stripped from Wikipedia”, and much less impressive, image of our friend Russian Warship 545 (which is still listed as the AIS name on Marine Tracker):

This page on Baltic Shipping also associates similar pictures with the same ID numbers, further corroborating this and giving a bit more extra backstory about the builder etc. “Kola” is listed as an Altay-class Russian military tanker with a matching 1967 build date on this List of Active Russian Military Vessels, and was actively doing stuff for the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean within the last two years (x) (x).

So.

My best guess at an explanation for all this weirdness?

  1. Creaky old Soviet-built oil tanker KOLA, owned by Russian military, was doing regular oil-getting business in the area.
  2. Said oil tanker is listed on some AIS records in the same manner as most military-owned vessels, “[nationality] warship [hull #]”, and with a red military ID dot.
  3. Somebody working for Vessel Finder is really lazy about attaching a database image to the profile for KOLA. (Interestingly enough, reverse image search turned up no other instances of the warship image used on the listing).
  4. Then, this week, Ever Given does the world’s worst parallel parking job and blocks up the Suez canal.
  5. KOLA, gone to go get oil and bring it back to the fleet, is now stranded with many other oil tankers in the middle of the Red Sea, unable to pass back up through to the Black Sea or wherever the hell she was going.
  6. At some point, perhaps somebody involved in the control/management of KOLA had the thought, possibly while sitting around at anchor for two days twiddling thumbs and playing cards, “hey, you don’t think our AIS designation would make us look like we’re up to some really sketchy shit out here, do you? given that hundreds if not thousands of random people are looking at vessel tracking sites right now?”
  7. “Hm. Shit.”
  8. (Alternatively, somebody onboard is killing time on their phone looking at the shipping carnage and notices their bright red tracking dot and alarming name).
  9. Phone calls are made/things are updated and Creaky old Soviet-built military-owned oil tanker KOLA hastily has its AIS display name updated to read as its registration name instead of “Russian Warship 545”, now with an orange oil tanker classification marker.
  10. This change has the unintended result of making them look EXPONENTIALLY sketchier than they did before.

ALTERNATIVELY: Less funny version, it may just be a glitch in Vessel Finder’s software that gets triggered by the two different names and the conflicting classifications. When I went to look at it again just a minute ago, we were back to a red indicator and “Russian Warship 545”:

Bottom line: do I think that anything freaky or untoward is ACTUALLY happening with this vessel? Not really.

Do I find this all EXTREMELY entertaining? You bet your ass I do.

Highly recommend just fucking around on vessel tracking sites for a few hours. Gosh what a fun time to be had.

unfortunately in my fact check I spent so long researching this tough and dependable 54-year-old Soviet naval refuelling vessel that I’ve accidentally become weirdly fond of it. she’s a sturdy old girl. I wish her well

broke: midsommar is a girl power movie

woke: midsommar is a horror movie about a manipulative cult

bespoke: midsommar is a litmus test to tell how easily you could be indoctrinated into a cult and if your first thought after watching it is that it was a girl power movie you’re very susceptible to cult tactics and you should be aware of that

it’s also a commentary on the cultlike structure of white supremacy and white supremacist indoctrination, especially through their use of Nordic neopaganism

to preface—ari aster is a Jewish man. he’s writing this story from someone directly affected by white supremacy (and if one doubts this: feel free to look at the white supremacist response to the film! it wasn’t positive)

anyway, the hårga are canonically neo-pagan white supremacists. ari aster has pointed this out in interviews explicitly, but if one pays attention and is familiar with white supremacy, it becomes painfully obvious.

many of the runes used commonly used among white supremacists.

the odal especially is seen throughout the film, down to the tables they sit at being arranged in an odal. this rune is used constantly by white supremacists to denote a love of White Heritage. what’s especially interesting about the use of the Odal is this—the particular way it’s drawn on many tapestries has the inclusion of “wings” or lines on the ends. The odal is most commonly drawn without these wings in modern usage….except, of course, used in the context of white supremacy. the odal with wings was the insignia of the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen, and is still commonly used by neo Nazi groups today.

their leader, an old white woman who snarls about The Black One, wears the ansuz, despite them not seeming to worship Odin—this is, of course, another symbol used by white supremacists (hell, there’s a hate group that has a prominent presence in Sweden but exists worldwide calls the Soldiers of Odin). the inclusion of The Secret Nazi Language of the Uthark in the set at the beginning of the movie makes it clear this was intentional

also, there’s not a lot of evidence for the “age old rituals” they use (the ättestupa and blood eagle) actually existing—the idea of them though? absolutely relished by many white supremacists.

just getting into the rest of the movie—the colors are blindingly white, bright, and the characters of color stand out clearly against it. josh, who is the more obviously respectful and dedicated academic, is deliberately passed over in favor of Christian by the harga for information for their dissertations, and Christian outright rips off his topic. they kill the white characters for disrespecting the cult’s heritage—but kill the characters of color to show their devotion.

the movie is a MASTERFUL commentary on how white supremacists grow their numbers—they don’t start out with swastikas and genocide. they start out with a kind word, with a promise of understanding, of community.

“i lost my parents too” pele tells dani. he draws for her, he wishes her a happy birthday. the women dance with Dani, dress her up, comfort her. the cult makes her the may queen. she feels safe with them. she feels comforted, wanted. has an emotional bond with them, even as they slowly isolate her, and prime her to believe what they do.

as a Jewish person myself—this was all intentional. the horror for me isn’t just the cult. it’s that this happens every day, and more often than people would think. the horror is in the knowledge that this is how people are radicalized to scream “Jews will not replace us”, or shoot up a synagogue.

anyway. here’s a couple articles from POC what also talk about this.

reblogging again bc my addition doesn’t show up in the notes, prolly because of the inclusion of links, which is super unsexy of Tumblr

Hi, I saw your post about ao3 so I figured that you may know more about this than I do. I'm a bit conflicted about continuing to use and support it, cause I keep seeing people say that the creators of it are pedos? And that we shouldn't support them, but I haven't been able to find any evidence for this. So I just wanted to know if you have any ideas about this because I don't. Thank you.

Alright buckle in as I yeet myself into the inferno

The people calling the creators of AO3 pedos are basically toddlers stomping their feet because the siterunners aren’t engaging in censorship at their demand. AO3 hosts content that depicts pedophilic relationships, and the only time they step in is if a work hasn’t been tagged with warnings properly.

The toddlers are cranky about this because they don’t think they should be responsible for their own internet experience, and they think they ought to be allowed to dictate what people can and cannot read/write. So they make attacks against the PEOPLE who run AO3 because they know it’s much harder to disprove those sorts of accusations than it is to do any real work on their own internet experience.

Here’s the thing: these people who don’t like that AO3 doesn’t censor content? They could run their own archive! AO3’s parent organization, the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), has made the code that AO3 is based on completely available to the public!! That’s the tagging system, the site skins, everything. But the angry anti toddlers don’t want to have to spend money and work to build their own sandbox, they want to be the tyrant in OTW’s, stomping around destroying people’s sand castles.

So essentially these are purity police who think that anyone who creates or consumes content that is problematic are instantly monsters. This is a failure of critical thinking. Real adults are able to tell the difference between fiction and reality, and can enjoy something fictional without enacting it in reality.

Now if you’re thinking “well idk why AO3 wouldn’t want to ban pedophilic works” let me put this little thought exercise down for you: Say AO3 does make said content a bannable offense. What’s to prevent antis from abusing the reporting system to go on personally motivated crusades against specific authors, or specific tropes? What’s to prevent homophobic fans (and I guarantee they exist) from using that reporting system to brigade against all slash fic?

The Archive and the OTW would either have to create a bot that would probably not work very well to evaluate these reports, or they would have to find scads of volunteers who would be willing and able to slog through every report sent to the system.

I’m not very good at coming to conclusions but essentially this boils down to “don’t like, don’t read” (aka MIND YOUR BUSINESS) and “the back button exists for a reason, as well as every warning the archive allows authors to use.” If you have another question and you don’t mind the way I answered this one, please feel free to ask!

I am not one of the founders of AO3, but I have been a volunteer with the site since 2010, so I feel like I can speak to why I, personally, have supported the project since before its beginning and why I’ve given a decade of my life, thousands of hours of time I could have spent doing other things, and hundreds of my own dollars over the years, to help keep it running.

It isn’t because I am “a pedo”, or because I like reading/writing extreme underage content.  It’s because I feel very strongly that there needs to be a space for fandom that isn’t owned by a corporation, that isn’t beholden to advertisers, that doesn’t risk disappearing overnight, and that allows any fannish content that is legal.   It’s because I have seen, after participating in fandom for 20+ years, what happens every time a fandom platform tries to ban certain content.

All the content on AO3 is legal to produce and access under US law (other countries may vary, but the Archive follows US law since that’s where it’s based, and so that’s what I’ll be referring to.)  Our Terms of Service specify that anything actually illegal (pornographic photos of real children, for instance) is not permitted. If you are a US resident and you dislike that written, fictional content about underage characters in sexual situations is legal where you live, please take it up with your government representatives, rather than with AO3.

I personally find some of the content on AO3 disgusting.  That’s fine! Nobody is required to like all of the content on the site.  But in using the site, even as a guest, you (general you) agreed to the site’s Terms of Service which includes the key line:  “You understand that using the Archive may expose you to material that is offensive, triggering, erroneous, sexually explicit, indecent, blasphemous, objectionable, grammatically incorrect, or badly spelled.”

This is probably the most-quoted line in the TOS (at least in my line of work), and for good reason.  In going on the site, you are agreeing that you might see things you don’t like.  You are agreeing that there is content that is fully permitted to exist on the site, which nevertheless might not be suitable or enjoyable for you, or might even be actively harmful for you to read.  You are taking that responsibility into your own hands - to say that if you come across something, you will look at the warnings, look at the tags, and decide whether you want to read any further or not, and if you make a mistake, you will backbutton away and learn better for next time.

AO3 provides tools to help you control what you see or don’t see.  You can choose to exclude tags through the filters - the entire Underage warning tag, for instance, or specific pairings or additional tags. You can choose to receive an adult content warning any time you access a work that isn’t rated G or T.  And if people don’t use the required warning tags appropriately (such as including explicit sex in a work rated G, or underage sexual content in a work not marked with Underage or Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings), you can report them to our Abuse team, who will investigate and can either require the tags to be changed or remove the work.

Now, let me go back again to what happens when a site used by fans imposes content moderation (particularly new types of content moderation that weren’t previously in place). One or both of the following things happen:

1. People wake up one morning to find that their work, which they previously believed followed the rules of the site, no longer does, or has been lumped in with other types of forbidden work, and has been deleted without warning.

2. Work that includes said inappropriate content still exists on the site, but is not warned for or tries to hide what it actually is, in order to avoid being removed.  People therefore stumble across it without warning, and have no way to choose to avoid it.

You don’t need to take my word for it, although I’ve watched it happen numerous times (Livejournal, Fanfiction.net, DeviantArt, Tumblr, just to name a few.)  You can peruse the Fanlore list of purges and read more from there.  But the short version is that, when sites start to impose rules about explicit content, underage content, RPF, or whatever they’ve decided is bad and wrong on that particular day, whole swaths of work get wiped out, including work that you or I might think had artistic merit, wasn’t “gross”, or whose only violation was being LGBT+ in nature (while comparable F/M works were left alone).  This is not a wild speculation about what could happen - this is based on very real first-hand experience on the part of the people who founded AO3 and its early users.  They (and I) decided that it was worth protecting even work we found disgusting, in order to ensure that work we loved would stay safe.  That was the bargain that the site was made under, and that we continue to uphold today.

For instance, although I said above that I don’t like reading extreme underage, I have both read and written works that were tagged with the Underage warning.  Works that feature older teenagers having sex, for instance, or that address things like child abuse or assault as part of the story.  I looked at the tags on the works, made my own informed decision about whether I wanted to read further, and if I decided that I chose wrongly, I’ve backbuttoned out of the work and moved on with my life.  But in some cases, I’ve found the works were very tasteful, artistic, moving, sad, heartwarming, or whatever other terms you might use to say “this work was good and I’m glad it exists and was allowed to be posted here.”

You might not agree with this position. You don’t have to! Maybe you think all underage work is equally vile and you never want to read it - that’s your right! And you certainly don’t have to donate to help support the site if you don’t want to - nobody does.  But what you do agree in using the site is that if you see something you don’t like, and it was properly warned for, you scroll past it.  You recognize that it is allowed to be there.  Thousands of people have worked hard for over a decade to create a site where people can feel safe posting, knowing that their work will not be taken down because the rules changed overnight, or because a thousand people reported their work for having the wrong pairing and it was easier to just delete it than deal with the torrent of reports, or because a specific moderator decided they didn’t like it.

My work on AO3 is one of the things I’m proudest of.  It is an important and valuable site.  It isn’t under an obligation to advertisers who might ask it to censor certain content.  It isn’t acting in order to make money or get sold off eventually to the highest bidder.  It isn’t selling people’s browsing history or personal data.  And authors can feel confident posting there that their work isn’t going to vanish overnight.  If you think those things are worth supporting, you can certainly donate, but you don’t have to.  The site will always be free to use, and those who can afford it and wish to support it will do so, ensuring it continues to exist for those who can’t or don’t.  That’s pretty amazing.

For the guys, butch women and non binary people all there. I’m a woman, but I’m reblogging this for anyone who finds this useful. ❤️

This also helps for drawing. I like to draw characters in suits, especially characters who often wear suits with different styles so this really helps! ^^

This can also be helpful with writing when describing clothes and gives an idea of when clothes don’t fit right.

literally being trans I was never given any instruction on how to wear a suit ever, and I won’t get it anytime soon since I don’t have an even remotely fatherly figure in the house. so this was very thorough and very useful thank you
