Hey! Just wanted to say that the Ambassador series of MacGyver fics is one of my favourite fanfic series Ever, and I stopped watching the show a while ago but I will still go and read those fics at least twice a year because they're absolutely amazing, and the line in Anvil+Duct Tape about deciding what's going to be a scar and what's going to be the end still resonates with me so hard. You're an incredibly talented writer, and I'm sorry if this is v intense but I just wanted to let u know how incredible your work is to me ❤

Thank you, Anon! I appreciate this so much. I've been struggling a bit of late, especially with my writing, and seeing this was like a surge of sunshine in my soul. Whoever you are, I hope your day is filled with light.

There was one of those hyperspecific polls that had an option like “your grandfather told you war stories that he never told anyone else” and now I feel like I have to tell the story about how a spider saved my grandpa’s life in WWII and how my family doesn’t kill spiders because we owe our existence to that One Single Spider

So to set the scene, it's the height of WWII in France and my grandpa—a 6'3" 20 year old upper Michigan farm boy—has been separated from his company after their temporary camp was shelled. My grandpa (who, I have to add, was nicknamed 'the Suicide Kid' at this point because he worked in demolitions and bomb interception and kept taking the jobs no one wanted with the expectation that he was never going home anyway) is scared out of his wits, wandering around the French countryside alone. He has to move at night and sleep in barns and sheds during the day to hide from people who most definitely want him dead.

On one of these days, he finds a farmhouse of a very jittery couple who agree to let him sleep in the barn, with the conditions that he sleeps in the barn loft and if he's found, they disavow all knowledge that he was there. He agrees, because he's exhausted and will sleep in a hay pile if he has to. My grandpa manages to fit all six foot three inches of himself into a feed trough stored upstairs and tries to get some sleep.

However, right when he's half-snoozing, he hears motors outside and sure enough, here are some very angry officers of mixed Nazi and Vichy make confronting the couple saying someone up the road spotted an American soldier walking this way. They wouldn't know anything about that, would they? No, of course not.

All the while, my grandpa—now trying to figure out how to either escape the barn unseen or how to fight off six? seven? eight? people at once—freezes up and waits for the inevitable. While he does, a HUGE spider crawls next to his head and onto the loft railing. For one second, he thinks about swatting it away, but that would risk him being seen and killed.

So, instead, he lays there and waits to either fight to the death or get executed in a feed trough. And while he lays there, the spider starts making a huge web on the railing. My grandpa's transfixed by this thing. He watches her go around and around, building a solid web before plopping herself off to one side and waiting for breakfast. At the same time, the officers finally go into the barn.

My grandpa can hear them searching around, turning over crates and checking animal pens. Then, he hears one say to check the loft.

And then another say, "Don't bother. Look at the spiderwebs up there. No one's been there in a while."

And they leave.

Because my grandpa didn't swat the spider away and let her build her web, the officers thought no one was there and left him alone. They drive off and my grandpa immediately thanks the farmer couple and hauls ass out of there as soon as he can.

After this, my grandpa refused to kill any spider, and his kids did the same. Because if it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have lived and would never have had kids or grandkids. So we owe her one.

There's the man himself. Go grandpa!!

this website has just recently become tolerable (aka the best its been in a long time) and I don’t think we should sit idly by and let the entire ecosystem get fucked just bc twitter isn’t fun for them anymore. i’m not even trying to be dramatic. if more big names do come here and try and treat it like twitter 2.0 then there will be changes. public follower counts. more ads. changes to the dashboard. its less about not wanting celebrities on here, more about not wanting this site to succumb to what has ruined so many other platforms

Go read an old fic.

There's such recency bias in fandom. As an author you post something, get a few reactions, and then it goes off into the bin. As a reader you check the tags, see what's new, and move on. But a lot of old stuff is really good. It's just sitting there, gathering dust, waiting for someone to take a peek.

So go on. Treat yourself.

Read an old fic.

Don’t ever feel bad if you stop writing. Whether that be temporary or permanent, please don’t feel bad.

I see a lot of people (often on anon) that just expect consistent content from artists/writers/bloggers/etc. It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to stop all together.

If you stop because you have to focus on school, I support you. If you stop because you are too exhausted from work to write, I support you. If you stop because you need to focus on your mental health, I support you. If you stop because you have writers block, I support you. If you stop because you just don’t get joy from writing anymore, I support you.

Of course you and your content will be missed because you and your content are loved by so many. But putting yourself first is okay. It’s what you should be doing. You don’t owe your readers updates or an explanation or apology if you stop updating. If you want to give them one, that’s totally cool, but don’t feel bad if you don’t. Don’t let greedy people tell you otherwise. Only you know what is best for you, and nobody should tell you that you’re wrong/selfish/lazy for doing what is best for you.

Ok I really can’t narrow it down to a moment because all of Mythology + Snare Net lives in my head rent free. I read that fic during a time in my life when I was majorly struggling with mental illness and it really uplifted me. Mac’s perseverance and Jack’s undying loyalty gave me hope (which may sound pathetic idk) To this day “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty still makes me think of that fic :)

I’m so honored to know that the story gave you some light in a dark time. It doesn't sound pathetic at all. It's one of those happy byproducts I, as a writer, never set out to achieve but am so grateful when I hear that it does. There are themes I try to explore in these stories that I deal with myself and themes I've never experienced personally but know people who have and I want to give the right amount of weight and respect to both. If you read the story and felt hope as a result, I'm honored. And so grateful you told me. I think of this story with that song, too. The Ryan Star cover is the version I had on my writing playlist when writing M+SN. I am a classic rock girl at heart, but there are some covers and some voices that just...get me when I'm writing. Here's the version, if you've never heard it: Won't Back Down, Ryan Star.

I can never stop thinking of Mac hiding out in the little shack at the abandoned amusement park in "Mythology + Snare Net" where he's trying to remember all the labors of Hercules...

Avatar

Thank you! I love that you love that. :)

It was so much fun (for me…not for Mac) to find ways to tie in the whole “Cerberus” theme @waitingforthestarstofall suggested for the Gates of Hell amusement park and to research the trials of Hercules. I felt kinda bad (in a good way…if that makes sense) for how much I broke Mac. I had been researching ways—reading, talking to folks who know more than me on the subject—of how to deal with PTSD and memory issues and the repetition of something familiar came up many times. I figured while maybe something like…the periodic table of elements would be more naturally familiar to a guy like Mac, he’d been trying so hard to get Jack to know where to come find him and had to walk all that way to get there, Cerberus would be more prevalent in his wounded mind.

I can't pick just one scene, but Jack remembering their gruesome mission back in the desert in "Solid Ground", the parallels killed me

<3 So writing that one made me want to write "original" fic -- I loved bringing together the present day danger of the earthquake and the flashback to the mission where they met Flynn. I loved having witnesses to their heroism, brotherhood, loyalty, pain. And I loved the freedom of weaving in so many ancillary OCs while being able to still focus on Mac and Jack. That was a fun one to write. *sigh* I really miss Jack.

For the 'most memorable scene in one of your fanfics' ask game: I have a terrible memory, but there's a scene with mac having a panic attack next to a car and Jack anchors him of course "one good breath" in one of your macgyvee fics and I read it several times before moving to the next chapter. It has free rent somewhere in my brain.

Avatar

Ah, yes it's the "You know what I can do in 15 seconds" scene from "Anvil + Duct Tape"...writing that fic had me falling in love with those two characters, not gonna lie.

Avatar

"Memorable scene" - Mac captured in High Rise + Free Fall, and while being tortured, Jack is stuck at a distance watching.

(Though, to be fair, can we say a whole fic? Because I will still pick The Raid as a whole scene because I love it and have read it more than any other)

Avatar

Ah, yup. I did love writing me some Wyatt Logan. :) And what's more, with that fic, I got to write about my hometown as well! :) I love that you love that one.

Five things that make me happy, in no particular order.... 1) Sunset, 70 degrees, a soft breeze, a glass of wine, and my deck. 2) The feel of my husband's hand on the small of my back. 3) My daughter's laughter. 4) Whumpfics. I feel no shame. 5) Music--especially a guitar and a voice roughed by age, time, or circumstance, or a melody that crescendos just right, plucking every string in my soul.
