I think the thing that people are overlooking is that. Momo was written as in love with her best friend Mirena, who died as a consequence of the war… and Fine was in love with HER best friend Aria, who DIED AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE WAR. This is the parallel the show is trying to draw between Fine and Momo - not that they’re in love with each other, but that they’re both lesbians who have lost the person they love the most and they have managed to find comfort in each others company and friendship.
The way they portrayed the relationship of an older lesbian & a young lesbian comes off as so truthful and respectful of reality. The mentorship, the safety, the protection - vampire in the garden is a love story, but it’s not about romance at all, it’s about acceptance, it’s about growth, it’s about finding your people, your family, in the middle of the chaos of war and hatred and people who don’t understand you.

In the AU idea I had, Ena and Kanade come from the same kingdom, but because of some war/(super)natural disaster they had to flee and now are travelers
Mizuki left their kingdom of their own accord since their parents advisors and such weren’t approving of them, and they didn’t like the stuffy royalty life either. Leaves with Rui and An as their sort of retainers, but part ways with them along their journey and eventually joins Kanade and Ena
Mafuyu acts as a spy for her mother, the queen of her kingdom. She is very obedient to her and doesn’t question her orders, even to the point of silencing those who find out more than they should. Eventually meets the others and joins out of similar interests, but she grows affectionate towards them and begins to form her own will as she spends more time with them

I’m such a big fan of how Bocchi did this character with like 3 lines. She’s supposed to be from England, so they got a bilingual VA to voice her. The way she says loanwords with a more English inflection is such a neat thing to hear. Especially that “Watashi 𝐸𝓁𝒾𝓏𝒶”
Her VA is Amaki Sally if anyone’s curious! She got really popular in english anime community (more specifically idol community) from her Ameba streams because she meme’d really hard and everyone Liked That

What I love about this is that, I mean, it’s a fairly classic gag, right? A character putting themselves in the trash? But the way this is animated conveys a bit of how physically awkward it would be to actually do that in real life. The little wobble as she tries to balance on one foot, her guitar case getting caught on the lip, the way she doesn’t quite fit all the way in. They really wanted to get across that this isn’t just a visual metaphor, she actually stepped into a trash bin, diagetically, and it looked dumb as hell.

I think that in splatoon world they don’t have gender but they did find out about gender from looking at old human stuff and have splooquizzes (splatoon uquizzes) that are like “are you a boy or girl?” And take them for fun and are like “oh you’re looking so boy today” or “so fresh! Very girl.”
