what I really like about the whole "how was Andrew supposed to protect Kevin from the Japanese mafia" discourse is that it gives you perspective about their relationship.

Ok so Andrew wasn't supposed to protect Kevin from the mafia —Riko and Tetsuji weren't part of the mafia they weren't part of the main branch—. Andrew was only supposed to protect Kevin from Riko, which means that Kevin trusted Andrew enough to know that he could take out Riko in any fight, Kevin trusted Andrew to protect him from Riko with his knives, something that Riko had always used against him was now the reason why Kevin felt safe
