On April 26, 2019, the Waorani Indians won their judicial struggle against the landing of the oil companies in the Amazon jungle of Ecuador.

A court in Puyo, the capital of Pastaza, issued a ruling of first instance in favor of the indigenous people on Friday, recognizing that the right to free and informed prior consultation and self-determination of the peoples was violated in the face of oil exploitation in the area. .

Its settlement is 40 minutes by plane from Shell, the town that adopted the name of the European multinational that operated in the province of Pastaza and is a symbol of the penetration of oil activity in the Amazon.

Hunters by tradition, the Waorani (or Huaorani) see themselves as guardians of the forest. As a warrior people they have asserted their ancestral weapons in defense of their codes of honor, but above all of the barely explored territory that inhabit the Amazon.

With the support of other Wao, the Indians of Nemompare and the surrounding area went to court to prevent the oil companies from entering.

With some 4,800 members, the Waorani own about 800,000 hectares of jungle in Pastaza, Napo and Orellana, a small part of the Ecuadorian Amazon basin. The law recognizes the indigenous jurisdiction, but maintains the power of the State over the subsoil.

For its part, the government claims to have the green light to call the oil companies thanks to a consultation made in 2012. However, the Indians indicated that officials then arrived by plane and obtained the endorsement with deception, food and refreshments.

Ok, I know I said this before, but these two kind of give me the same energy of Lizzy and Darcy (in fact, I they inspire me a little bit).

Lars has that arrogant and aloof aura, but actually he is not a sociable person, and also he is nice and attentive with the people he cares the most. Mei is clever, sassy and lively. And both of them are stubborn and quick tempered.

Also I think that when they met they had a very bad impression of each other. She thought he was such an arrogant and obnoxious man. He though she was too obstinate, insolent… and pretty.

They get to know each other, he finds her interesting, but doesn’t know how to be close to her. She is still not really impressed or she is too proud to recognize that maybe she judged him too fast.

He fell in love with her quickly and that torments him, because he thinks she doesn’t like him. After spend more time with him and get to know him better, she realizes he is nice and kind, and she starts loving him.

And They finally confess their love.

Remember how, during Damion Scott’s time as the artist for Batgirl, Cass was very clearly darker-skinned than Babs and Bruce? These days she can almost pass for white most of the time.

I wouldn't say dark, more like, different skin tone. Babs and Bruce are more pink/ivory and Cass is more of a lighter wheat colored shade

But it is true, she's more K-pop East Asian pale nowadays.

[image: a scene from Batgirl featuring Barbara Gordon as Oracle and Bruce Wayne as Batman. They are in Barbara’s computer room, surrounded by a ton of monitors and computer equipment. Barbara says “Last week? You’re not talking about… what was his name?” Bruce says “Robinson. John Robinson. The man she failed to save.” Barbara turns around in her chair and says “What? She broke into a highly fortified compound, got him out, and captured the scumbag responsible. Where’s the failure?” Bruce says "he died.” Barbara says “But… he died from wounds he’d received before she even knew he’d been kidnapped.” Bruce grimaces, showing his teeth. “He died, Oracle. She failed.” Barbara says “You listen to me. You try to tell her that she failed that man… and you’re not welcome here anymore.” end image]

Some more Batgirl screencaps.

I feel like Cass is one of the Batfam members who has a very similar perfectionist streak similar to Bruce, and that she would probably agree that she failed here too.

But.

I feel like she really needs someone like Oracle in her corner, because I feel like Bruce’s issues hit Cass’s issues in a not-good way. When Cass’s identity is temporarily exposed in front of the evil government guys, Babs is like “Well don’t you want to be able to have a civilian life if you want to?” and Bruce is like “awesome we can use your non-costumed identity as a weapon (IIRC he literally says weapon, but don’t have the comic in front of me). Here is a cave to live in with no one else. Time to train 24/7.”

and cass is like “awesome thats just what I was going to do anyway”. I’m pretty sure later the writing makes it clear that that was a kind of lonely or isolated way to live, including The Rose Was an Analogy All Along ™. (Babs telling her it needs sunlight and can’t stay in the cave all day).

anyway

I feel like there’s a similar thing here in that obviously it would have been better if Cass had saved John. I don’t think anyone is disputing that point. but I also feel like Cass really has enough angst right now. She doesn’t need to hear she failed when she did literally everything she could. She doesn’t need to hear she failed (especially from Batman, who IIRC she thinks pretty highly of) for not being omniscient.

Anyway

[image: a series of comic panels from Batgirl. First, we see Cassandra Cain as Batgirl and Bruce Wayne as Batman. cass is leaping ahead and Bruce is behind her. Bruce’s internal monologue reads “She was perfect. Not ‘good’. Not 'better than expected’. Perfect.” the next panel shows Cass busting through wood and punching a man holding a gun in the back of the neck. Bruce thinks: “I would have surveyed the room before charging in. She didn’t have to.”

As cass finishes busting through the wood, she she bursts in the middle of a room we can see has guys in suits and guns. All of the guys look surprised. Bruce thinks: “Her strange training enables her to… read opponents. 'Body language’ is a real language for her. her only language. With one glance, she already knew what they’d just started to think about doing.” Cass’s feet are almost touching the ground now and bruce thinks “the fight was over before her feet touched the ground."We see Cass from the bad guys perspective - menacing, in shadow, and leaping towards them with her hands stretched out. Bruce thinks "but that’s not what impressed me.”

Cass (now from a normal perspective again) elbows one of the guys in the face. Bruce thinks “Those people were scum. Cold-blooded killers. They’d fired at women and children, killing dozens. Batgirl knew this.” we see bruce, just standing back and watching. He thinks “She also knew how I felt about it. How little I’d have minded any extra… zeal.. on her part.” We see Cass uppercuting someone and pulling her hand back for another punch. Bruce thinks “But… there wasn’t any. At her speed, it must have been difficult, but she did just enough to take them out. No more.” She punches the guy with her hand that was drawn back earlier. a little bit of blood escapes his mouth. Batman thinks “She was… it wouldn’t have looked this way to anyone else, mind you, but she was… gentle. even with them.” end image]

end image, begin commentary

Okay, last pics before I start doing homework.

One thing I love about Cass is that she tries not to hurt the people she is fighting. Which really should be standard protocol, but. Not sure it is.

But it’s never “look at how much better she is than everyone else so she can beat them to a bloody pulp” its “look at how much better she is - she doesn’t have to.” she can finish the fight without putting anyone in the hospital, so she does.

IIRC in No Man’s Land vol 2 (been a while since I read it) Azrael mentions something similar to her. When Cass knocks someone out, he observes the guy didn’t have a bruise or a concussion like he was expecting from someone getting knocked out. I don’t know how plausible this is in real-world physics, but in comic-book world it works.

I’ll also confess I love this starting with “she was perfect” :P that is my mental quote for cass TBH.

Cass’s spite should not be underestimated. Like someone walks past her and is like: Isn’t that too many chocolates while she’s eating a bowl of Halloween chocolate she just stole from the neighbouring house. And she dumps the entire bowl of chocolate in her mouth while maintaining DIRECT eye contact.

Someone (Lex) tells her she’s showing too much leg at the Wayne Gala and she ‘accidentally’ trips and rips off the bottom of her dress so she’s showing ALL leg and then also ‘accidentally’ punches him the face.

Bruce tells her not to be a vigilante and she goes NO and then immediately goes out like this:
