hi im gonna leave the su critical scene for a while because even though im not in any discourse currently, things have been getting uh, toxic, and its stressing me tf out. i think im gonna sit back, study race and race politics a bit more so i dont mess up anything big bcs im white, and i want to make good and educated points on character design without accidentally being racist so. yeah. maybe ill come back later when im more confident in my knowledge

no offense but i’m tired of su’s weak-ass representation. lars is filipino through the picture of a recipe in a book, connie is indian through a picture frame of her mom’s wedding. like if uncle andy can be outwardly xenophobic then why can’t any character actually mention their fucking race

WHAT THE FUCK LMAO PEOPLE R SAYING THEY HATE SADIE NOW LMAO OK IM DONE WITH STEVEN UNIVERSE LOL

Avatar

also i remember space race being a big deal back when i first saw it bc it was so out of character for pearl to almost kill steven so it made me feel like she really, really missed her home. and she actually apologized at the end. and now it doesn’t even make sense that she would want to show steven space bc weren’t they afraid of the other gems coming in?? why would she wanna go out there when she freaked out at the sight of peridot?

not to mention the multiple times she’s been into space since then and shown no enthusiasm.

what if rose managed to store her conscious in her room and acted like a guide to steven and the gems and instead of storm in the room being about steven having to carry his mother's mistakes it was about a sort of gem monster hacking into the temple and destroying rose's room's ai so it was just a cave again? kinda like alluras dad in vld

su crit: *points out legitimate problems of the show like the ignorance about framing a human zoo as a utopia, the disregard of characters like Bismuth and the Rubies, the over coddling of Pearl, how the Diamonds are being framed as sympathetic despite being tyrants, the dissolving characterization, etc etc*

su stans:

su crit: lol Lapis’ color scheme is bright. Also I didn’t like this one episode because-

su stans: WOW look how petty this wannabe crit is if you don’t like the Best Show then stop watching l m a o

Steven Universe:

  • Takes 2 seasons to introduce a series villain
  • 3 seasons to actually do anything with them
  • Still hasn’t resolved roughly three quarters of the mysteries introduced in the first ten episodes

Rick and Morty

  • Topples a galactic empire in a single episode

Seeing Stevonnie and Kiki get all dressed up to go to the dance and having fun: :)!!

Reading a review of the comic and finding out that apparently during a slow dance, Kiki asks Stevonnie to go on a date after the dance which is followed by them, leaving, unfusing and freaking out yet again: :C…

eeeeeeeghhhh i defended the crew at first too when all i knew about it was they went to a dance and tried on fun outfits

Ugh god wtf i thought it wasnt anything like that either

I can’t believe I’m saying this but can you believe that MLP:FIM had a message about overcoming self hate and past mistakes much better than SU?

(I’ll be using Pearl manipulating Garnet and Lapis holding down Jasper for comparison since both characters admitted they wronged someone and hated themselves for it)

In MLP:FIM, the character Princess Luna was banished to spend 1000 years in the moon because of her jealousy and violent backlash. Rather than accepting that ponies would be more active in the day time than at night, Luna attempted to hide the sun with her moon and KILL her sister (Celestia) for trying to stop her.

In the first two episodes, Twilight and her friend reform Luna and Luna apologizes to Celestia feeling bad about what she did and they both make amends.

However! Much later in the season it’s revealed that Luna put a spell on herself to give herself nightmares. Despite everyone forgiving her, she herself could not move past her past choices and believed she deserved some kind of punishment. The spell got so powerful that Luna had to defeat it by accepting that she’s a changed person and isn’t the monster she previously perceived herself.

Pearl overcoming her self hate for hurting Garnet fell short because she tried to make excuses for it. Rather than accept that she crossed the line and broke Garnet’s trust, she began to talk about how much she envied Garnet’s relationship and then began to berate herself for it.

Lapis’s self hate falls short because despite acknowledging she had full control and power, she still tried to act as though this was a mutual relationship where Jasper could somehow overwhelm her, as well as Steven constantly coming to her defense.

Luna made no excuse for what she did, and neither did the main cast. She only addressed that she did something bad and as a result endangered others for it. She overcame her self hate by accepting that she’s a changed a person, not guilt tripping so someone could play her life coach or act as though she was somehow the victim as well.
