I’m so tired of every show that takes place in the past (wild west, medieval, pirates etc) ALWAYS having so much sexual violence towards women like writers can cry “oh it’s realism” all you want but it’s very transparent how realism only applies when you want to hurt women on screen. If we’re talking staying realistic, why doesn’t everyone have brown teeth? Or bad skin? Or dying of dysentery? Just admit y'all want an excuse to brutalize women on screen lol

This pisses me off so much. A lot of the time if you mention realism would also involve women having unshaved legs or pits, or bushy eyebrows, or syphilis, the answer is often “well that’s gross, no one wants to read about/see that” and like…. If you think that women being ugly is grotesque, but brutal depictions of rape aren’t, then I don’t really know what to say to you other than stay the fuck away from me.

To add to this: The pirate captains had personal codes (rules) about what was allowed on the ship, and some of them were very clear on the subject of sexual violence

IX. If at any time you meet with a prudent Woman, that Man that offers to meddle with her, without her Consent, shall suffer present Death. “ -From the code of Captain John Phillips

“ 9th: If any p[er]son or p[er]sons shall go on board of a Prize and meet with any Gentlewoman or Lady of Honour and should force them against their will to lie with them shall suffer death. “ -From the code of the company of Thomas Anstis

Or in other words, sexual violence against women was recognised as a crime punishable by death on actual pirate ships, don’t let anybody tell you it’s necessary for “realism” when the pirates themselves recognised how absolutely despicable it was.

Here’s a daily reminder that I have so much respect and love for Damen like this dude was stripped of his identity, his family, and his dignity but he still took that shit storm of a situation and came home with an army, a crown, and a hot ass boyfriend like I can’t even express my love for that man.

A dating service where matching is based on people’s search history exists. You’re a serial killer. You go on a date with a writer.

Serial Killer: metaphorically, if you were to kill someone, how would you do it?

Writer: Air shot between the toes, it’ll look like a heart attack.

Serial Killer who is obviously in love already: *sucks in a breath* ok

Writer: how long would it take to die if you were to potentially stab someone in the guts

Serial killer: anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes

Writer, already bringing a ring out: *shaking* thanks

A++ addition

Writer: *shows the serial killer the murder scene they’re writing* babe, i’m not sure if this would actually work?

Serial killer: *kisses writer on the forehead and leaves, comes back later, a suspicious scent of blood coming off them* it works baby, you’re doing great

I LOVE THIS

Oh no, murder comedy is my jam

I love this, I love all of this, but quick question, does the author know? Like are they aware that their significant other is a serial killer or do they just think that they have a morbid sense of humor? It’d be even funnier if the author had no fucking clue, like how Aurthur Conan Doyle was apparently stupidly gullible, and on top of it they’re a horror or crime novelist. Like the serial killer works at a butcher shop or something so it’s completely normal for them to come home smelling like blood, no murders going on here, no sirey. Just my darling coming back home from a long day at work.

Now fast forward a bit and the author has managed to get their first book published, with loving support from the serial killer who helped them fine tune all the murder scenes, and it’s a big hit. Enough so that a detective with the local police department has noticed some disturbing similarities to several active cases, including details that were never released to the press. Obviously he brings this up to his superior and convinces him that there’s something to the theory, but it’s all circumstantial right now. He stakes out the author’s home and is super convinced that the author is the murderer, but they don’t seem to do anything??? Like they literally are at the house all day, that’s it. Most they do is leave for groceries.

So you get this dynamic of the serial killer mining the author for creative murder schemes, the author being lovingly encouraged by the serial killer, and finally the detective who is just so sure that the author is the killer and that if he sticks it out long enough he’ll FINALLY have proof.

Plot twist, The serial killer and detective use to go out so it gets sub what personal.

“You need to stop seeing them. I think they are a serial killer.”

Serial killer breaths in. “Look-”

…perfect

I don’t like actual murder mysteries, but this is perfect

I had this song in my mind for a while now and thought it might be fitting :)

This is also the first picture of a photoshooting I had yesterday as 20s Fem Crowley.

It was great cosplaying her and to try something new since I usually cosplay kinda soft characters.

I also did a lot of research and tried to get a halfway historical correct look out of this dress that I bought earlier this year only with superficial research.

I'm in love with all the pictures and @story-of-infinity did a really good job!

So there will definitely be more Good Omens content on my feed ;)

“My dear, some days I thought I saw you. But maybe it was just the times that made me think of you.”

Because of their spat they probably didn’t see each other in the 20′s, but I can’t think of a time that would suit Crowley more.

20′s inspired- I wanted to get in some sort of beaded wing shawl and low waist dress. Don’t @ me on inaccuracies ^^ I’m just having a design play.

I also saw some decorated heels with leaves and flowers up the spike. (Originally white- I thought the colour play might have suited Crowley subconsciously channeling Aziraphale, though in this pic- she has one of his feathers.)

So I was rereading The Summer Palace for the 262726th time today and I came across this scene and remembered how much I love it.

After everything Laurent has had to endure, and all of the walls he always puts up to keep everyone at arms length because he didn’t know who to really trust, and was afraid to trust, he now has Damen. Someone that loves him, and who has managed to break through all of those walls to get to the very core of Laurent. And Damen is so tender and so happy to be with Laurent. And that means, for the first time in his life, Laurent is free to laugh and flirt and even be bashful with Damen, with this man he actually has a huge crush on.

Like, yes, they’re in love and going to be kings and rule an empire together, of course, BUT it just kills me that Laurent, even knowing he has every part of Damen, still has this innocent, pure crush on him. And he can express it in this innocent, sweet, clumsy way. He can be young. Damen makes hims feel safe enough he can finally be carefree and do the things he never got to before, like court the boy he likes and be courted thoroughly in return. He can be happy. And meanwhile Damen is so joyous just to see it, to experience it, to watch his beloved blossom like he deserves to.

Honestly these two just… RIP TO MY EMOTIONS OKAY.

Is Hetalia Propaganda?

I debated with myself whether or not to make a post on this. Whether or not to give the discourse any attention. And being honest, this post will probably be a bit rushed because I do not want to be one of the people dragging this out after the discourse has long ended. But I think now would be a good time to share my thoughts on one of the major criticisms of Hetalia.  Is it nazi propaganda?  As a Hetalia fan, it would extremely easy for me to say “No, this argument is ridiculous and looking at things too deep. Let’s move on.” But I don’t think taking that route is doing us as fans any favors. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with just questioning Hetalia in this way and being critical, especially when we live in times where fascism and violence motivated by bigotry are serious threats. And while (spoiler) Hetalia ISN’T propaganda, I can’t pretend I don’t see where the criticism is coming from at all. I do.  A cutesy anime that personifies countries and initially takes place during WWII? With the Axis powers as the likable main characters?  On an intuitive level, that premise isn’t sounding too good to say the least. And I’m gonna return to talking about that premise later in this post. But first, let’s focus in on the question looming over us.  First of all, Hetalia never actually brings up the hateful ideology associated with the WWII time period. And you can’t exactly promote a way of thinking if you never even throw hints at that way of thinking having a presence within the series, much less it being correct. Now I’m not saying something has to be in-your-face with its message for it to count as hateful propaganda. Subtlety and dog whistling exist. But the ideology still has to be present in some way. Hetalia distances itself from the bigotry in the time period it largely takes place in. Instead, the series seemed much more concerned with showing off tidbits of information like America’s fondness of painting odd designs onto warplanes. The type of information that viewers/readers would find funny.  Nobody is gonna read Hetalia and end up drunk on nazi propaganda and turn antisemitic because Hetalia isn’t sneaking in talking points that promote bigotry. It’s just not there. Germany is overall intended to be likable, but this character isn’t used as a medium to make a horrible ideology seem sympathetic. Germany is there to comically parody German stereotypes and historical events.  But with all that said. Even if the series doesn’t platform hateful views. Isn’t making the Axis likable just in bad taste? The series may not bring up some of the harshest realities of WWII, but that reality still exists. Why portray a country like Germany as an overall nice guy? Does that not have bad implications? This is indeed something I find understandable to be uncomfortable with and is one of the reasons I can see why this series may be hard to get into at first. However, making the Axis antagonistic would be contradictory to the mood of the series. Hetalia isn’t the type of satire that intends to make you reflect on the ugly side of history. Instead, Hetalia is written to be very lighthearted. The personifications are made to be likable and the series is rarely ever mean spirited in its comedy. Being engaged in politics and history and other satires usually means constantly recognizing all the bad that has happened and the bad that continues to happen. And that sort of thing is essential. But there’s also a place in the world for something like Hetalia that’s not trying to hold up a mirror that exposes to viewers/readers how ugly their reality can be. Hetalia is here to provide satire that makes us laugh and feel good. This isn’t denial. This is a breath of fresh air. I can’t completely excuse how Himaruya wrote the Axis powers early on. With the type of series he was going for, criticism of history denial was inevitable, but that doesn’t automatically mean every decision he made is immune to being pointed out as being in bad taste. WWII with the Axis powers as the main characters just was not a good starting point for a lighthearted satire that disconnects the characters from their governments. That’s just too much of a sore spot. I think even Himaruya himself knows this and that’s why he has moved away from that original premise.  Himaruya probably never expected Hetalia to become anything more than his hobby. He could never have predicted how popular the series would eventually become. Himaruya was just a history nerd with a possible special interest in the 20th century that liked to draw comics. So he got careless in some areas. But that carelessness doesn’t mean the series is hiding a sinister agenda. As someone who spends a lot of my time engaged with politics, I find Hetalia really enjoyable for how optimistic it is. When I read Hetalia, I don’t have to think about how bad things are. I can instead see these personifications bring out and portray the good in their countries. That’s why I keep coming back to it.   There’s the already mentioned good on top of people being drawn to these very likable characters and getting invested in them to the point of wanting to know more beyond what the series shows. As much as detractors like to associate this series and its fans with ignorance, Hetalia has been a motivator for a lot of people to learn about their own country, other countries, and the history connected to those countries. And that’s worth something.

In light of recent events

/sighs/ I'm sure some of you guys have been aware of the hate that's been going around, or maybe you've been a victim of it. I would like to keep this blog discourse free on the matter, but I will say that you are all wonderful people for sticking with this fandom.

Whether you're new, have been here for a year or two, or have been here for years upon years, you are all great. The basis of hetalia is simply personifications of countries goofing around and sometimes going through serious moments, and yet you all looked at it and went "but what about this?" or "what if they weren't personifications, but rather in this AU?".

I've read fanfiction in this fandom that is better than a lot of books I've read (and I read a lot!!). I've read fanfiction that may not be book worthy, but there's so much passion behind it you can't help but love it.

I've seen artists grow and improve through this fandom, and I've seen other artists come together in discord servers and give tips to those that would like to try to improve. I've seen professional illustration level pieces done. I've seen artists that are just starting to find out they love to draw, and are so proud to show off their work.

I've seen cosplays that are better than movie costuming, and some that were just thrown together from what someone had in the closet, and some in between. They are all amazing, and it warms my heart to see them.

Edits and MMDs take so much more time than people realize, and yet people still put their heart and souls into making them look the best they can be.

This fandom is one that so many have grown and improved in as they have matured and gotten older. I personally have been in this fandom for 6 years now, and I am proud to say so. This fandom has helped me through my deepest lows, it has helped me improve my art and writing to places I never thought possible, it's given me an interest in history through an angle I had never considered, and it has given me some of my best friends that I know will stick with me through anything, even if we move on to other fandoms.

So yeah, we're "still into hetalia". What of it? There is no law that says after x amount of time you have to leave your fandom and find a new one. This is our home, and we aren't going to leave just because some people lead such miserable and sad lives that they have nothing better to do than harass people on the internet. Those people are in the wrong and need to get a job or a hobby, or at the very least a life. You all already have one.
