Thank you all for joining us for another Zolu Week. We had such an amazing turn out this year, I was impressed with all your submissions and loved seeing the different interpretations of zoro and Luffy’s relationship and what it means to all of you!

As usual, if we missed you, please message us with what we missed. Don’t feel shy or like we’re ignoring you, tumblr is just bad at their tag systems sometimes!

Thank you all again and we’ll see you next year! ♡

“Subtle”

If Zoro ever uttered the word “subtle” in conjunction with a list of their captain’s character traits, he knows the other crew members would shake their heads or possibly even burst into outright laughter at the notion because Luffy’s one of the LEAST subtle people they know. In their view, the best vocabulary to describe Luffy is “blatant” and “shameless” and, above all, “LOUD” … but while he agrees these words do indeed describe Luffy in most cases, “subtle” is the only way to describe the little moments he sometimes shares with his partner.

“Subtle” is the way Luffy’s gaze flicks towards him in battle, eyes filled with trust that he’ll not only be able to comprehend but perfectly execute orders delivered unspoken.

“Subtle” is the way the rubber man exchanges one of those small secret smiles with Zoro when there’s a joke with a punchline only they understand.

“Subtle” is the way Luffy’s hand steals into his when they’re walking together, his captain’s fingers twining and curling between his fingers until their palms meet.

“Subtle” is the way he tilts back the brim of his straw hat before leaning in to press his lips to Zoro’s mouth while their nakama are otherwise occupied and oblivious to stolen kisses.

“Subtle” is the way he muffles his voice against the swordsman’s neck, trembling arms hooked around him as they lie sprawled together with tangled legs in one or the other’s bunk.

“Subtle” is every “I love you” Luffy delivers without speaking- the little gestures that communicate everything words are simply too poor to articulate- and so although there’s a literal plethora of vocabulary to accurately describe him and his vivid personality, “subtle” is the undeclared yet much merited word for him that Zoro knows he’ll always hold most dear.

“Sacrifice”

“Zoro, no- you don’t have to do this!” Nami insists, eyes fixed on the swordsman’s stern, unwavering expression of resignation.

“I’ll- I’ll tell Sanji,” Usopp threatens, gulping nervously. “I swear I will- and he’ll kick your ass for even THINKING about-”

Zoro shakes his head. “It’s too late. I’ve already decided ‘n there’s no way anybody’s gonna change my mind.” He turns to look at Luffy, gazing down into his captain’s watery eyes and using the pad of his thumb to gently smooth away the single tear that’s begun to trickle down the younger man’s cheek. “Please… please don’t do that, Sencho. It’s gonna be okay. I promise.”

He’s sliding the last sea king steak off his plate onto Luffy’s when Sanji returns from the kitchen, glaring at everyone as he slams his free hand down on the table and barks, “Seriously, what’s with all this shitty drama, you rubber asshole? I TOLD you there were seconds coming if you’d just wait a second! And YOU- what THE HELL’D I tell you about giving this greedy bastard food from your own portions, shitty moss?!”

If y'all were expecting something serious from me for the zolu week “sacrifice” (7/23) prompt, lol, sorry. There’s enough angsty content in my fics to last me a lifetime, so here- have this goofy piece of slice-of-life instead.

english isn’t my firs lenguage and i’m always learning, so please if you find any typo or error please let me know, I hope you like it, comments, likes and reblogs are appreciated

The more time Luffy spends in Wano, the more he thinks it’s completely custom-made for Zoro. Everything and everyone wants to fight. With swords.  As the dog-thing carries him and Tama off into the wilds, he scouts for more weapon-wielding animals.

Zoro was probably off having an adventure of his own somewhere, wasn’t he? He huffs when he thinks about it. Selfish? Maybe. But is it really so selfish to wanna share all the adventures Zoro has? …Probably. He pouts. The distance really left him itching for some quality time with his first mate. Zoro better tell him all about everything he did. Preferably while they’re eating. Damn, is he ever hungry!

Animals of the wastelands pass them by. Thugs in the distance on beasts of burden chase after a woman he doesn’t know. One of Wano’s samurai cuts him down and he swears–he swears he recognizes one of the voices…

Written for the @zolu-week. This is for both the 4th and 5th day prompts: “Free Space” and “Subtle”. I found the draft of this story among my many folders and WIP files, so I decided to revise it and adapt it a little more to the “subtle” prompt of the event. Basically, I wanted to (subtly  :P  ) show how Zoro can understand his captain more than anyone else in the crew. Nami is also featured in this story, and she is a great crewmate too (all of them are), but I see Zoro’s relationship with Luffy as something special, as I explained when I submitted my previous story for this event (the Zoro and Luffy one shot). This fanfic is also about something else though, so I guess it will also be my contribution for the “Free Space” prompt. By the way, I rarely use Luffy’s point of view (that’s rare in canon too), but I had to here. I shifted from his point of view to Zoro’s and Nami’s, and some paragraphs are also written from the point of view of an external, omniscient narrator. I hope the story isn’t confusing…   ^^’ Please read and comment, and remember that any kind of feedback is really appreciated!  :)

Luffy gave him a part of his old sash. Zoro traded his old bandanna for it.

Neither of them were really into rings. Zoro thought it felt weird on his finger when he held a sword, and Luffy would’ve just lost his after toying around with it too much. But to be completely honest, it wasn’t really a marriage. Not in the standard meaning of the word.

On the back of an old grocery list somewhere was the legal paperwork labeling them both, “husbands”, which Nami had officiated and signed (along with the rest of the crew, for good measure). Luffy never liked that word. He associated it with old sailors complaining about their wives, as though they’d lost their free will. The old “ball and chain” or something.

Being with Zoro certainly wasn’t prison. If anything, he felt more free by his side than he’d ever been before.

People ask him on occasion if anything’s changed. He never knew what to say, really. Things were the same as ever, legal stuff or not. Whether it was two years or twenty, stuff between him and Zoro didn’t change. Side-by-side, back-to-back, in each other’s arms at night. That’s how he wanted it. That’s how it stayed.

–Well, some stuff does change.

Zoro’s cheekbones stick out way more. He loses an arm and some of his bulky Zoro-ness. Luffy’s face gets less squishy and somewhere down the road he takes a liking to Zoro’s unshaven morning look. He also grows a little. Maybe.

(He really should’ve kept track of that somewhere.)

Still, right now isn’t a whole lot different from back then. The future doesn’t change a whole lot. Not really. His feelings don’t go away after Zoro’s hair turns completely white and he starts relying on a slew of meds to keep his health steady. Zoro’s lap is no less comfortable even when he gets all bony.

“My head feels empty, though,” Luffy comments, scratching at his hair with a frown. “It’s weird not wearing a hat.” He hums. “But I can’t just replace that hat with any ol’ hat, y’know?”

He feels Zoro press up against his back, his arm and elbow nub wrapping around him. His chin rests in his hair and makes him feel a little less hat-less.

“Do you regret handing it over?”

“No,” Luffy says immediately. “Doesn’t mean I don’t miss it.”

It was the previous wearer of that hat, after all, that made him set out. It was that hat that motivated him to keep going. It was the thing he’d clung to for so, so long as a comfort object. He sighed contentedly and relaxed in Zoro’s hold. That hat let him meet Zoro, too.

“You think there’s another hat like that out there, Zoro?” Luffy speaks up again, looking up at him. “Some cool adventure hat waiting for me to find?”

“Hard to say.” Zoro grins down at him. “We could try looking for it.”
