joel killing her just sped up what would have happened anyway within an hour or two
Also I find it hilarious that Joel was like "please don't kill Ellie, can't we try something else" and Marlene was like "nope, I've thought about it for five minutes and this is the only way"
But then when Marlene's life is on the line, ohhh, then it's time for "wait you don't have to do this you can spare me" Like????? Where was that for Ellie? For a literal child, the only immune person you know of, and the child of your best friend? Damn girl.
I love the parallel of those two scenes. Together they have the same energy as Kathleen’s “kids die all the time” speech to getting her face ripped off by a kid clicker mere minutes later. Poetic cinema baybee.
