shit like this has bothered me since forever and I only realize why now, its because they try to break norms without going all the way through, to the point of going backwards. Yes, a man can be pretty and soft BUT that makes him a princess! Or a wife! Or a material girl!
Notice how the essential social meaning of princess and wife never change. Notice how they have trouble wanting to consider that pretty men can be pretty princes, or pretty husbands. Notice how the roles associated with these words (wife and husband will always mean entirely different things to them) never change. They cannot fathom it, and because they do not want to think without the base of stereotypical gender.
Its all 'FUCK GENDER ROLES', but babes you depend on them so much. Your whole ideology would crumble and you wouldn't feel so special anymore without those stereotypes. Which is why progress on gender roles is not only stagnating but actively regressing, now anyone can opt into boxes that should have been destroyed long ago for the sake of true progress, but are being kept around for decoration.
i'm going to make him my wife = i'm going to make him my cute lil submissive armcandy wifey and feminize him in an adorable, hyperfem, probably slutty bottom kinda way bc that's what "wife" sounds like to me when applied to a guy! it's just fun! drag for women is empowering bc men have power and drag for men is cutesy and sexy and bimbocore bc that's what wife/girlfriend/girly reminds us of!
i'm going to make her my boyfriend = i'm going to make her be my protective hypermasc partner, bc a "girlfriend" obviously wouldn't be those things and still be a female partner, it doesn't sound right or "euphoric" since girl = dainty little femme, and i want a masc woman so she couldn't possibly still be my girlfriend, it would feel off or not ~qweer~ enough, a girl having a girlfriend is boring
my boyfriend is a princess = my boyfriend couldn't possibly be a prince while dressing/acting like that, he's too feminine for that he deserves to be called a dainty little princess! princes don't look or act like him, that's too princess-y! calling him a prince when he's in a dress and looking all pretty would feel weird!!
that girl is the coolest dude ever = she's confident in a man kinda way and acts just like a "dudebro" aka be loud and brash (obviously male traits /s) so calling her a dude just Feels Right bc girls couldn't possibly be that boisterous!! also "girl" feels too feminine and sexualized and too subdued! dude/bro feels badass and just a goofy class clown that everyone loves! the word girl is never enough!!
these aren't always the case obviously, i've even said i want to be a girl's boyfriend before. but i wish ppl examined the underlaying sexist themes of this kind of ~subversive queerness~ more often :/
