though in retrospect ive concluded that sophie's ep1 jab at jane "you have to be screening my calls. there's no way you sleep at night" meant 'with everything you've done, the guilt must keep you up,' my first interpretation was 'i know you're a caffeine addict and your sleep schedule is shit' which is less serious but very funny and probably also true

Oooh, interesting! My default interpretation of this line was always "I haven't slept well in years because the PTSD nightmares are terrible and unending, and I assume that's true for everyone else who's lived through the war, including you."

Slightly off-topic: the thing about this line that I love is that in the beginning Sophie claims she doesn't know what time it is for Jane ("Let me know when you get this; I never got any better at time zones."), but in this line she accidentally admits that she knows she's calling in the middle of the night for Jane, which means she must have cared enough to look up what time it was for her. She's not as chill as she wants Jane to think she is.

YOU'RE SO RIGHT and im forever obsessed with all the ways sophie insists she doesn't care in the first few episodes and then immediately turns around and tells on herself... the first time i listened literally THEE first thing that caught my interest was when sophie says "the first thing i should say is that i had your contact all deleted so don't think that i--i had to ASK someone for this" bc having had this character for three seconds i was like whoa i do not believe her. and admittedly now i could go either way about whether sophie deleted jane's number in a fit of anger but i think it's delightful how OBVIOUS it is from day one that 1. sophie wants to seem like she doesn't care about jane or her opinion and 2. she really, really does

chapter 2 is up!!!!

Sophie comes back a few more times over the next couple weeks. Sometimes she’s doing better; sometimes, worse. There’s an air of fragility, of unreliability, that Jane has never associated with Sophie before. Sometimes she’s so sad she can hardly speak and other times she gets furious at the drop of a hat.

It’s what war does to people, Jane thinks, but somehow, deep down she had believed that Sophie might avoid it. Or hoped, at least. The first time Sophie mentioned enlisting it sounded like a stupid joke. Evelyn had gotten so angry. For weeks, every conversation between the three of them turned inevitably into a fight.

You won’t come back the same, Evelyn had snapped. If you even come back alive.
