roxy sniffled and clung to dirk, crying into his shirt, “you dont have to stay with me you know, ill be fine on my own, im used to it.”

Dirk frowned and wrapped his arms around Roxy, giving a comforting kiss to the top of her head. “You don’t have to be, Ro-Lal.”
“dirky, really, ill be okay alone,” she nuzzled into his chest and cried harder, her grip on his shirt clearly contradicting her words
“If you think I’m going to leave you alone like this, you’re wrong.” He rubbed her back and pulled her back to the bed to hold her close.
roxy just cried harder at his words, clinging to him like her life depended on it. “b-but im sure you have much better things to do than comfort me”
He rocked with her, sighing. “Shh. Just cry it out and when you’ve calmed down a bit we can talk. Just let me do this while I can, Lalonde.”
she nodded and continued to cry, letting him rock her gently. him being here for her meant a lot to her, even if she couldn’t currently vocalize it. eventually she stopped crying and looked up at dirk.
Dirk might not have always been openly affectionate with the other kids when he was younger but now looking back on it he wished he had been rather than always hiding behind the persona he’d put on to hide anxieties. He’s happy he can be here for Roxy now and for Jake when needed and would of course help Jane if she needs it too. When Roxy looks up, he rubbed her back and waited for her to say something, not wanting to rush her.
she smiled at dirk and thought about who dirk used to be. he was cold and closed of, hiding all his insecurities, but now he was affectionate and here for all of them. she likes this dirk a lot more than the old one. “i just…emotions are dumb and i dont like having them”
He’s still working on it, of course, but he’s more open and honest about himself than he used to be so he considers that a victory. He cant help but give a dry little laugh at what she says, though. “I understand that on a spiritual level, Lalonde…” He smiled and used the corner of a blanket to wipe he cheeks. “You want to talk about that shit or you just want to sit here with me for a bit?”
his laugh made roxy feel slightly better, so she smiled at him in response. “im just seeing everyone get into relationships and stuff, and im sitting here with no one to love, and i just wonder…” she trailed off and sighed before continuing. “i wonder if anyone would like me.”
“Hey, just because you don’t have someone right now doesn’t mean you wont later, and even if it doesn’t work out the first time you might end up finding someone else who you can stay together with.” He pats her cheek. “You’re a wonderful, beautiful person–take that how you will from a flaming homo, hah–and anyone who’s into girls would be very lucky to have you. You’ll find someone.”
“every single person that i seem to like doesnt reciprocate my feelings though. i mean just look at you, and jake, and davesprite, all of you guys seem to have found other people that make you happy.” she smiled wistfully up at dirk, tears still in her eyes. “im just doubtful now”
“Davesprite’s single, actually, he just isn’t looking for a relationship. Nobody in our house is, really, and I wasn’t either but Jake stumbled into my life and it was a bit of a happy accident.” He kissed her cheek. “With the case of you- or any instance of ‘roxy and dirk’- it’s a matter of sexuality; if I did like women I guarantee you I’d be more likely to be able to give you what you wanted out of me.” Dirk runs his fingers through Roxy’s hair. “Someday–not today, maybe not even for a few years but someday–someone’s gonna walk into your life. I promise you.”
roxys eyes filled with tears at dirks words. great, so it wasnt that the guy she liked isnt single, he just isnt interested. absolutely fantastic. “youre so optimistic dirk, but what if im just not destined to be happy? what if im destined to be the lonely cat lady for the rest of my life?” roxy let a few more tears fall from her eyes. “i help save the world, yet im gonna be lonely forever.”
That is not what he meant! He just meant that DS wasn’t looking for ANYONE right now, he’d heard it from his own words that he wasn’t comfortable dating. Dirk sighs, wiping her cheeks again. “Don’t say that. You’re talking to a Strider here, and you know I don’t lie about shit. You trust me, right? So trust me when I say that when the time comes, the time comes, and you’ll find someone.” He tucks some hair behind her ear. “Is there someone in particular that brought this about in the first place or is it a general lonely feeling? Because either way, it’s not a permanent feeling you’ll have to deal with. There’s always a better tomorrow someday.”
no matter what dirk said, roxy was gonna take it the way she wanted to. it was a bad habit that she usually could fight through but not when shes upset. “i know you dont lie, especially not to me, im just worried. and i trust you a ton dirky, its just been so long and no one has seemed to show any interest in me.” she nuzzled into his hand as he tucked her hair behind her ear. “and it was just seeing all my friends so happy with each other that kinda reminded me that im alone.”
He rubbed her cheek with his thumb, trying to think of ways to comfort her. “You wont always be alone… But, for now, is there anything I can really do to help?” He furrowed his brows, orange eyes full of concern behind his shades. “Cuddling, ice cream, a movie? Anything?”
roxy sniffled and smiled up at him, “cuddles and movie would be great right about now…and donuts wouldnt hurt either.” crying made her hungry but all she wanted was sweets right now, not real food.
“Alright. Give me just a second.” He rubbed her shoulder and flipped through his sylladex, pulling out his laptop for netflix and a bigass blanket to cuddle under. No doughnuts though, so he hops up and heads into the kitchen, grabbing a bag of Hostess doughnuts and bringing them back. “These ok?”
“yeah these are perfect distri,” roxy replied, grabbing the donuts and pulling dirk down onto his bed. she wraps the blanket around both of them, and immediately hijacks his laptop, playing a random movie netflix recommended. this was the best, dirk was the best.
“Sweet.” He let her snatch the laptop and just sorta curled protectively around her while she picked a movie. Quiet and cool as he can be, he really does care about his friends. So much.
dirk curling protectively around roxy made her feel about 10x better. she knew that dirk cared about her but a reminder was always welcomed. even with the movie playing, her main focus was cuddling with dirk, since he was an amazing cuddle partner.
He wasnt very focused on the movie, eyes actually closed behind his shades as he rested his chin on Roxy’s shoulder. His attention was more on not so subtly making sure Roxy was okay for now. He.. He’ll probably fall asleep like this but deny it.
roxy knew that dirk was making sure she was okay instead of watching the movie, and it meant a lot to her. dirk was such a good friend and the fact that he was always here for her was amazing.
