Murderbot Diaries resources

This is my current hyperfixation.

THE SHORT STORIES

There are two short stories officially connected to the Murderbot Diaries universe, both of which can be found for free online.

  • Compulsory — published 2018, by Wired.com as part of "The Future of Work" collection. Takes place prior to All Systems Red, sometime after Murderbot has hacked its governor module. There is a revised version of this released summer 2023 with an extra 500 words, purchasable.
  • Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory — originally given free with preorders of Network Effect. Takes place after Exit Strategy, from Mensah's point of view, as she grapples with post-traumatic stress and Murderbot's refugee status on Preservation.
  • Obsolescence - not officially part of TMBD canon, but by the same author, referenced in Exit Strategy, and appears to be in the same universe.

THE DISCORD

There are multiple TMBD discords, but the one I know of with an open invite is New Tideland.

My TMBD Fanfiction divided by AU, in chronological order, with suggested reading order.

The Locked Tomb short stories: As Yet Unsent The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex

can't stop thinking about tamsyn muir's choice to present her deep, morally and politically complex science fantasy world with a central web of magic, secrets and lies reaching back ten thousand years through the eyes of three characters who:

1. tune out and start thinking about hot women whenever the magic system or worldbuilding are being explained

2. experience hallucinations on a daily basis, have brain damage and are being deceived and misled by their peers, authority figures, themselves and God

3. don't know who they are, have spent their entire life in one place and are, on all levels but physical, six months old

Avatar

So admirable. I have so much respect for Muir's choice in that.

I must not mock Gen Alpha. Mocking Gen Alpha is the mind killer. Mocking Gen Alpha is the little-death that brings total generational solidarity obliteration. I will engage with Gen Alpha lovingly. I will permit them to be cringe. And when they grow up I will turn my eye to their accomplishments. Where mocking has gone there will be nothing. Only generational solidarity remains

The Kids are indeed Alright.

We must teach them the Lore of things,

like piracy, and how to find stuff at the Library, and Unions, and what it's not legal for job applications to ask you.

when i hear complaints about the boomers, i say "was it not boomers getting shot by cops while protesting against the war in vietnam? Were not boomers the ones who insisted that banks would no longer require a cosign from a husband or father for a woman to open an account or have a credit card? Did they not literally take us to the moon?"

When i hear complaints about gen x i say " did not gen x bear the brunt of AIDS and the creation of the 'inner city'? wasn't it gen-x marching for queer rights and women's body autonomy and a change in corrupt banking policies in some of the largest protests in the country's history?"

when i hear complaints about millennials, i say "have not millennials fought against and lived through so many 'once in a generation' disasters they should by all rights have given up by now? Are not millennials those who rally against the status quo? the industry killers, the cop protesters, they who live through unending hardship as the economic noose tightens, leading the charge for sustainability and socio-economic reform?"

when i hear complaints about gen-z i say "hasn't gen-z gotten involved younger, and been involved stronger, in the continuance of these noble traditions? Are they not living without even the broken pieces of the promise given to the generations that came before? haven't they had their childhoods derailed by the imminence of consequences for actions they were never even present for?"

when i hear complaints about generation alpha i say "HOW DARE YOU. How dare you malign these souls who will have to fix so much that they did not have a hand in ruining... or else die of these mistakes made before they were born. How dare you do the work of our shared oppressors and alienate our fresh blood. You are not to mistreat and mock the youngest soldiers in this fight, no! you point out to them the best targets, you share your rations, you show them how to stay alive, because anyone in the trenches with us is our brethren, our sistren. Our safety and our strength."

don't let the worst kind of stand up comedian tell you other generations are terrible. Don't let the worst kind of headline convince you each generation is against the other. Don't let the worst kind of oppressive force keep us divided along lines that mean nothing real. Because that is how they win.

honestly it’s so weird from time to time to see people disliking Kiriona or full on thinking she is some different from Gideon entity just because she was somewhat rude (i personally wouldn’t even call it rude tbh), like come on if i spent a single day in company of Ianthe and Jod, by dinner time i would start constructing a pipe bomb to killing everyone in the room and then myself and that’s me not including into equation all the tonns of trauma Gideon went through (girl died, girl’s soul started to get consumed then got locked away and forgotten, she thinks the girl she sacrificed herself for doesn’t love her back, she learnt that she was just a bomb in the eyes of her mom, once again she is literally mega dead and has an incompetent god for a deadbeat dad and IANTHE as a “bestie”)

Avatar
gamebird

And didn't she spend six months in that state? Or rather, six months resurrected into her own dead body? Or a Jod-created body for her to inhabit? I don't think we know the details and that's part of my point. All that time Nona had to learn about the world and what she was, Kiriona was over there doing her own learning and growing and changing a bit. She has Ianthe as a 'friend' and apparently Jod has spent most of the time off either shagging mortals or locked in his room, either way engaging in a lot of bad coping mechanisms, being emotionally unavailable for his daughter. We see her after six months off screen and yeah, she's different. Is she still the Gideon we know and love from GtN? Yes and no.

The most autistic joke in System Collapse is actually when MB says “Give me a minute”, AdaCol2 says “Mark time, 60 seconds” and you’re like LOL, it didn’t mean it literally, silly hub system

And then at 60 seconds, AdaCol2 pings and MB did mean it literally

Avatar

And one of the most lowkey irritating parts of Fugitive Telemetry for me is:

“Admin access, under five minutes.” I know, five minutes was a hilariously long time, but I wanted a good long look around while I was in there. Indah didn’t reply. I figured it was about 40/60 between “it will take over the station and kill us all” and “this isn’t the worst idea I ever heard.” Then she said, “Only five minutes?” “I’m fast,” I said.

Then at the start of the next chapter:

AFTER ALL THAT, IT took me six minutes to find out the dock surveillance system had not been hacked.

URG. I mean yeah, sure, it took extra long because it was probably checking and rechecking, looking for evidence that wasn't there. But I *so much* wanted the estimated time to be accurate.

Base idea: there is a language which has two alphabets, and their use is gendered. Men use one, women use another.

Like imagine if English but men write only in lowercase and women write only in uppercase.

Or print/cursive.

Next idea: what if the alphabets are overlapping? Like, the language has only 1.5 alphabets, because the men's and women's alphabets each have 25 letters but 10 of them are the same.

You could have writing tricks where you try to limit yourself to the gender-neutral subset, to avoid revealing the gender of the speaker. Like those books where they don't use the letter "E"

Another idea: what if the alphabets look the same, but are interpreted differently?

So like, men's alphabet uses the shape "g" but it makes a "ch" like in "church" sound, but for women that is a vowel that makes an "oo" sound like in "boo".

So they use the same glyphs but they are technically different letters.

Then you could have people coming up with sentences that are readable in both Men's and Women's alphabets, but mean different things.

(this also implies that you need to know the gender of the writer before you can understand what they're writing)

This is a fascinating idea.

'Thanks, I hate it.' is appropriate here.

But still fascinating.

Back in my day we KNEW they would never be canon.

We shipped anyway

'That character is asexual. They would never-'

Hey, I started shipping characters back when Zachary Quinto was still in the closet and being out would have been a career-ender, even for a big name like him. We made the characters gay or bi anyway. There is no significant difference to taking a canonically asexual character and giving them teh sex.

(Though I tend toward keeping them asexual and finding ways to skirt around the edges, just like in the past I would make my m/m characters bi if they'd had a canonical m/f relationship. That's just me and my obsessive canon compliance. Other people can do what they want and it's all good.)

henry made it home safely with a pinup of klinger in his wallet

#just mash things

part 30

The wallet of a man in a fine pinstripe suit, spectator shoes and a white hat inside the wreckage of a Korean War-era plane was found by scuba divers over the sea of Japan 19 years later. The man was later identified as Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake.

Preserved inside the wallet of the man was a picture of another man, Maxwell Q Klinger, wearing a pink evening gown.

"We didn't want Henry Blake going back to Bloomington, Illinois and going back to the country club and the brown and white shoes, because a lot of guys didn't get back to Bloomington."

Gene Reynolds

I got into an argument with a high school friend on the bus to a field trip once.

"Henry Blake shouldn't have died."

"No he shouldn't have. That's why they killed him."

PRECISELY.

When they did, they got hundreds of protest letters, telling them how unfair it was that they killed off a character.

They hand wrote letters back and said that the week that episode aired, a plane carrying children trying to escape the Viet Kong was shot down, no survivors. They said that they hoped the people who protested Henry’s fictional death protested as passionately for all the children who were actual living beings.

These writers were not fucking about. They did it to hurt you. They did it because it was the only way to make people understand that when you have war, when if you think it’s a just war, not everyone comes home. Even if they’re decent, silly affable guys like Henry Blake.

I’m sure OP just said this in fun, but no. Pretending he was fine undoes everything the writers were trying to do, and retcons one of the most important moments in television history. Retconning it undoes the primary mission statement of M*A*S*H. It MUST be recognised. He must die so the viewers understood that when there is a war, everyone loses.

Avatar
gamebird

M*A*S*H did not fuck around. It did not glorify war, dying, or killing. And it was very, very overt about that. It was a controversial show.

it's fine if you have v*nilla sex but please tag it appropriately so people can blacklist :/

Avatar
gamebird

OP - honest question: is this ironic? Sarcasm? Satire?

Because if you * vanilla sex, then anyone who has blacklisted vanilla sex and never wants to see a post about vanilla sex (like yours here) is going to see it.

If you had left it unaltered, then everyone who doesn't have it blacklisted would see it and have the moment to consider whether they wanted to create a blacklist for it or tag with it more often.

But you didn't leave it unaltered. Meaning it looks like your primary intended audience are the people who have already proactively used the tools available, just like you're saying, to not see that.

That seems weird. That's weird, isn't it? I'm confused. Unless it's some kind of joke I don't get. (There are a lot of jokes I don't get.)

Avatar

I don't understand myself sometimes. I make a nice breakfast - biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs. I get everyone up to eat it and they do. And now they're all awake and wandering around doing stuff and trying to talk to me and I wish they weren't here.

I'm so dumb.

Anyway, I'm leaving to gather eggs. Let them do the laundry, consult about medication, 'where's the cat's toy?', 'hey have you seen this video?', and 'Liverpool isn't doing so well in the standings this week!' on their own. Even my work was calling me: 'I bought an air compressor housing back in 2022 and I'm standing in warehouse 2 not able to find it.' WTF, dude? Anyway, I hooked him up with a better guy to help him and I'm off to see the chickens.
