todd’s a shy, anxious, and introverted character

keating throughout the movie constantly calls him out on this and not in a way thats like “oh i want to help you with ur anxiety” but it just generally feels like teasing

constantly calling out a student’s anxiety is not the way to go - any scene w/ keating where he’s not being picked on by keating, todd seems pretty okay, he’s laughing or just minding his own business - the only times he looks super uncomfortable is when keating actively calls him out

keating may say we’re laughing w/ you , but for todd, i doubt he feels anything but like they’re laughing at him

i think keating is just trying to push him out of his comfort zone - which is why i think he has good intentions - but he doesn’t go about it the same way

like in comparison

neil also pushes todd out of his comfort zone - the difference ? neil goes out of his way to let todd take it step by step

like asking him to join the poets but when he realizes todd has a problem w. speaking, he asks the poets if its okay that todd doesn’t speak 

that is considerably a better approach than keating doing the yawp scene

shyness and anxiety aren’t things that will go away if you force the person into uncomfortable situations - theyre more so things that you deal with a step at a time 

if todd wasn’t already a little more comfortable in his skin becuz of neil (and the other poets) i don’t think the yawp scene would have turned out so well

becuz theres a big difference between pushing someone out of their comfort zone to try new things versus shoving them out w/o any warning and just leaving them

this approach may work on students like neil, knox and charlie - who feel relatively comfortable already in the spotlight but for someone like todd it’s just pushing him too far

its not much different than the other grownups belittling todd for not being able to speak up tbh even if the intent is different

i think most if not all of todd finally being able to speak up and be comfortable in his skin is becuz the poets just like him as he is - like in the first scene they invite him to a study group despite todd not saying anything but like 2 words - then despite him not waning to speak they change the rules a little for him to be in the society

they let him go at his own pace and thats what lets him develop

#Flashback to the very first night in question and it’s just me crying

hey besties don’t you think that there’s so much irony in todd and neil’s love for each other being the thing that frees todd and opens him up

and then later its that same love that suffocates him and drags him down with the what ifs

and todd would lay in his now empty dorm cursing neil’s name for loving todd so furiously, so gently and then ripping it all away and leaving todd behind with tatters of what he was with neil and nothing of what he had been before

because how dare neil come in and take everything todd had to offer to become everything todd had and then just leave and todd hates him so much

hates him with every tear and hopeless sob

hates him for every pitiful look aimed at his direction

hates him for every hug his friends give as they desperately try and put him together

but fuck he doesnt

he can never hate neil

even if neil took everything that todd had when he took his life

even if all that theres left of todd is just a shell waiting around to join neil

oh the irony of neil’s love bringing him to life and then killing him

Charlie always trying to impress Todd ala Johnny Bravo Style; flexing how much he knew about poetry and always smirking/smoldering at Todd (like how he did with Gloria and Tina) except Todd isn't into the direct approach and doesn't understand why Charlie is telling him a bunch of poems when he could be saving it for some girls the knew.

Charlie, looking deep into Todd's eyes: "She walks in beauty, like the night/ Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright /Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light/ Which heaven to gaudy day denies."

Todd: "Isn't this a Byron poem Mr. Keating taught us?"
