I am decently impressed by the way The Wilds accurately summarized the experience of modern teenage girls in its first five minutes.

so I was rewatching the wilds and episode one, when they are all using dots phone to call people, rachel says she’s going to call her coach. nora immediately gets defensive and takes the phone from her. I initially thought it was bc nora didn’t like their relationship and felt that the coach influenced rachel’s ed and other issues but now that we know she’s the other “agent” i’m thinking it’s bc the coach wasn’t in on it like the girl’s parents were

Thoughts on The Wilds

SPOILERS BELOW OBVIOUSLY

What I loved:

- THE GIRLS. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. They really all grew on me, I thought the show did a fantastic job giving each of them some depth, some substance, some flaws and endearing qualities. The flashbacks were a great tool to build all of them as individuals, and then on the island proper everyone also gets a moment to shine… And yes, sometimes they act recklessly, they make rash decisions, dumb choices, but it always felt very real, very grounded in the reality of their situation and their personalities and the fact that they are, you know, teenage girls, so even though you may end up frustrated at some of them, at the end of the day you’re still rooting for all of them.

- All the relationships between them are SO interesting! So many flavors of friendship, of solidarity, of allyship. So much tension between vastly different characters who come from vastly different backgrounds. So much affection and support and compassion for each other, and yes, sometimes there’s also pettiness, jealousy, anger, resentment, but the good always outweighs the bad, and that’s so refreshing in a survival show. Oh, and the f/f romance is lovely.

- PLOT TWISTS! Some stuff you could see coming from miles away (which is not a bad thing!), but some twists were truly AMAZING.

- The survival plotline in itself was so damn enjoyable. Great use of tropes, great mix of humor and silliness and actual danger and tension, creative solutions and fun setbacks and much needed victories…

- I also really enjoyed the “interviews” scenes, and everything that takes place in the compound/bunker. The contrast between these characters now and what we see on the island is so juicy, it really succeeds in keeping you invested by teasing at things that will happen, and then surprising you with how they happen. And of course, the girls ending up separated just make you YEARN for some good reunions, which is a+ writing I thought. Now all I want if for them to figure shit out and escape together and expose the whole truth to the world.

What I loved less:

- The scientific experiment angle is… not uninteresting, but also a little bit too caricatural/cartoonish for me. It’s fine! It fulfills its purpose in the story. I just don’t care much about it.

- The plot twist at the end, with the boys’ island… Please, don’t switch the focus of the show to the boys next season, I could not care less about this, just let it be a secondary plotline/something the girls have to figure out, and nothing more.

THINKING about the wilds and fatins scene with her mother and lipstick vs shelby with her hair and teeth and how both these characters relate to their womanhood and indeed sense of self through beauty but in such different ways, and yet always via the paradigm of a patriarchal society.......poetic cinema.jpg

So, have you started playing favorites? Okay, there is one. She’s shrewd. She’s skeptical, almost to the point of paranoid. Even though I’m sure she’s gonna be a major pain in my ass, I am still drawn to her.

Toni and Shelby saw food to take back to their starving friends and decided to be horny instead.
