The “Mystics” Masterlist

When Arch becomes hired on at Mystics by the strange shopkeeper Lyrem Nomadus, everything seems to be going well. In fact, their life nearly becomes perfection; no more bullies, better grades, and a lot less stress. Soon enough, however, Arch realizes that perhaps not everything is as perfect as it seems and that Lyrem has been hiding a very dark, and troubling secret

Thank you to @myst-in-the-mirror for all the support and encouragement! I don’t think it would have gotten very far without you!

Put away the tech for a while. Sit outside and watch the world move in real time. Don't forget to grab a hot drink first.

Because I really love the karate kid franchise I gotta talk about the moment Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel to clip the bonsai and tells him to picture it in his mind.

Daniel asks Miyagi, "how do I know if my picture is the right one?"

Miyagi says, "If come from inside you, always right one."

And I don't know why but I think it's quite beautiful. Watch the original if you haven't seen it.

witch’s broom; Do you ever wish you could be a child again? Why?

Not really. Childhood was terrible. Kids annoyed me then and still annoy me now. I much prefer the adult world :P

cherries; Do you keep a journal? starlight; Share a secret. velvet; Have you ever wished upon a star?

Avatar

Hi! This is late answering but I gotta catch up the asks somehow.

Cherries: I kept a journal as a kid because there was no such thing as therapy for kids "back in my day". I still have them but I don't write about personal things anymore. It helped when I had no one to talk to, but now I do, so I don't have to write as much.

Starlight: opting out of this one, there are no fun secrets.

Velvet: yes I have but I can't remember what I wished for. Probably for money, to be pretty, or world peace. Idk.

Thank you for the asks!

Hello! Just popping in to check on all of the participants today. How's the experiment going for you? Any interesting updates or exciting developments to share?

Wishing you luck in your writing endeavors! 😆

Avatar

Hello friend! I must apologize for my lack of activity. My world has become very busy since I signed up for this experiment and my usually habitual writings have become somewhat delayed, sparse, and otherwise nonexistent.

But!

That is not to say my brain hasn't developed a series of very interesting story ideas since then.

I just hope to find the time to write them down.

Thank you for the check in. You have been very kind and encouraging.

Xoxo.

What's a scene that you finished writing that gives you the most whumperflies?

Who do you like to write most, whimper, whumpee, or caretaker or other?

Is there anything your followers should brace themselves for in the coming days?

Avatar

Excellent questions! I'm delighted! Thank you so much!

1. I don't really get whumperflies from my own writing but I do get prideful. There are a few sentences where I've sat back and been like, "Damn, so that's what good prose looks like."

Here are a couple:

(1) It’s an invasion, an unwanted, unexpected intimacy. Like ivy, it crept into his consciousness, spread through his body, winding itself on every uninjured nerve, and choked him.

(2) Fallen from a perfect place, dropped from careful and careless hands, and lived in tiny, fragile instances of joy and grief and pain.

(3) Their flesh is ripping apart as if there's something creeping under it, desperate to escape and respond to every loving, thorny, worshipful kiss.

2. Whumpee or caretaker! It's hard to get into and stay in the mindset of a whumper for me because they can be extremely cruel and that hurts my own feelings sometimes. 😅

3. 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃 Yes.

what was your inspiration for your current wip? did it evolve into something different after you started writing it or did it stay like you planned? which character do you feel like is closest to yourself?

Avatar

Currently, I'm writing a high fantasy called the Book of the Owl, nothing is shared online for it though.

My inspiration for it was originally from when I was a child, and super interested in all sorts of magic and human culture. I developed an entire world, and entire calendar and several belief systems for it. Everything I designed was pulled from all different cultures, and then changed to reflect the world that I was putting it into.

For example, the old world in the book of the Owl followed a calendar with 8 seasons per year, each year corresponding to a certain animal (8 years in total for one iteration). It was inspired by the Chinese zodiac. The animals in the Book of the Owl are in order as: owl, bear, spider, fox, frog, serpent, mountain lion, and raven. Each animal contains its own meaning and symbols, colours etc. Respectfully, the seasons in each year that corresponded to an animal were: Frost, Melt, Budding, Blooming, Storming, Scorching, Harvest, and Deadfall.

In later years, the new world (the world my characters are a part of when the story takes place) the old calendar is replaced with a Common Man's Years, and counts base ten like ours.

It was so hard to count with a base eight number system that I eventually started just counting out the years on a spreadsheet and I spent many hours figuring out when characters were born.

Everything has changed since I started developing the world and the characters, but 2 things remained the same.

Our main character Enid who is 13 and summoned to become a Mage (their magic depends on being able to use the old calendar and know it's symbolic nature) he has always been naive and found herself in various troubling situations.

And my other main character Yamin who is 46 and must teach Enid the ways of the old world magic. He is very troubled himself; his predecessor was very abusive toward him and caused him to become a drug addict. So when he is given this responsibility of taking care and teaching Enid, he is understandably out of his depth and must heal before anything good can come out of their relationship as student and master.

Together, they have to find a way to survive as the new religion has decided to persecute them for their powers. :O

Enid was originally a self insert. Now, she is definitely her own person, and I've come to see some parts of both of them within me.

This was probably too much information. Haha.

Let me know if anyone wants me to share a snippet.

I plan to put it on Betabooks when I finish all the final edits.
