I had a sudden thought. If you combine Crowley’s “I can’t find you!” in the burning bookshop and his 6000 years of always being able to pop up right when/where Aziraphale needs him…

What he must really mean is “I can’t sense you anymore.”

Crowley could find Aziraphale anywhere on Earth. He storms into the burning bookshop and looks through it a little, but definitely not thoroughly enough to say for certain that it’s empty. He just already knows Aziraphale isn’t there. That Aziraphale isn’t anywhere on Earth. Which is why he comes so quickly to the conclusion that Aziraphale is dead.
