The 1989-1991 Dragon Quest TV series was slightly re-edited for its home video release in Japan with the eye catches featured above being removed for whatever reason.

Sometimes I do stuff weird.
While making Brobots I originally thought I would draw it all on the computer but as I was working, I just wasn’t 100% happy with how stuff was looking. So here is a break down of an average page.
Layout: I would draw some of this in sketchbooks and some on the computer.
Refined Layouts: I’d take another pass on the sketches I did, just to try and figure it out better. This step has lots of random drawings that didn’t make it in to the gif.
Pencils: Then I would print those out on paper. Large panels would get their own sheet of 8x11, the bottom two are printed out together. From those I would clean them up with a red pencil. I ended up having an easier time finding my shapes with a real pencil, rather then on the computer. I’d scan up all the parts and reassemble it.
Inks: Once it was all back in photoshop, I’d ink it was a rough pen that has a little flex in the weight.
Flats: I’d send off the inks to a flatter, once he sent them back I’d pick out colors for the page.
Colors: This is just finding the lighting, adding texture and trying to create a cool mood. I tend to think in color, so a lot of this work is kinda thought out before hand.
Lettering: I wanted all the balloons in the book to be hand drawn. Sometimes that worked out better then others. Then I hunted around for a typeface that would work well with my art.
Over all this sounds like a lot of steps but it went much faster then it looks. I could layout and pencils 3-5 pages in a day, sometimes more or less. Inks I could do 3 to 4 a day and about the same with colors.
