Propaganda under the cut!
College friendship is sending one of your friends who's graduating soon a giant list of monster theory and gothic horror academic reading recs so they can download as many PDFs as possible before they lose their university database access
Got a request for some of the recs here, so here's a short-ish list of some of the reading recs -- I've made an effort to link open source and/or at least slightly more accessible databases like JSTOR wherever possible, but some of these are, admittedly behind various paywalls that I wish everyone luck with circumventing in whatever manner you deem fit
This isn't even everything I've dug into on the subject, but I hope it's enough to get folks started on some reading!
Propaganda under the cut!
Selections are based on my university's Latin reading list, with a couple names added to round it out to 32 contestants. So unfortunately, not every author managed to make the cut--I'm sorry to all three of my fellow Silius Italicus fans :(
I'm accepting propaganda for any of the competitors! Drop your arguments, panegyrics, hot takes, and trash talk in an ask!
Polls open up on Monday, 4/22, and will be open for a week! All reblogs are greatly appreciated!
well i said i would so: my rec list for queer classics scholarship! this comes from my own experience with the subfield of queer classics during my time as a graduate student and my current life as an independent researcher.
i'll put it under a cut because it's long and because (gasp!) i capitalized more formally while i was writing it. if you find this resource useful and want to support an underemployed colleague, my ko-fi is here.
actually if tumblr ever dies we should all occupy the liverpool classics listserv
im curious about how many people consider themselves part of classics tumblr and what those people's relationship to classics is IRL, so...
I trick you into thinking we’re doing a cool pub crawl in Scotland but instead I take you on a cairn crawl and you’re stone cold sober as I force you to traipse across farmland with me and then infodump about the chambered tombs within.
I start explaining what we know about the process of excarnation during that era and then when we finally get to the cairn I get overwhelmed and start crying and it’s the worst vacation you’ve ever been on.
If you still like me after that then we can go to Orkney and see the Knap of Howar, Tomb of the Eagles, Skara Brae and my favorite, Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn. I will end up crying at all of these sites as well.
don't threaten me with a good time
guys I finally did it. I procrastinated something so hard I actually made a uquiz.
Rosaria Champagne, “Law of the (Nameless) Father: Mary Shelley’s Mathilda and the Incest Taboo”
Comic for “The Ruin” a poem written by an unknown author in the 8th or 9th century
How wondrous, this wall stone,
Shattered by fate.
Castles are smashed,
The work of giants, crumbled.
Ruined are the roofs,
Tumbled the towers.
Broken the barred gates.
Frost in the plaster,
Ceilings a-gaping.
Torn away, fallen,
Eaten by age.
