Following an author’s path from AO3 to getting published is such a trip. Mandatory disclaimer that it’s important as a fan not to get delusional, overfamiliar, or parasocially weird about it, and to remember that you don’t actually know them as private people. But as long as you (and I) remember that, we can bask in the sheer wealth of hilarity that presents itself to the longterm fan.

  • The author of the Hugo and Locus-winning Teixcalaan series met and courted her future wife (the author of the Greta Helsing series) on AO3, in the public comment section of a Kylo Ren/Hux fic the latter was writing.
  • More than a decade ago, the author of the Locus-winning, Hugo and Nebula-nominated Locked Tomb series wrote a gift fic that features, among other irl people I can’t identify, the future author of the Homestuck Epilogues, the future character designer of Hiveswap, the future author of the Teixcalaan series, herself, and a well-respected Classics scholar from Oxford. As Homestuck trolls.
  • The person mentioned in the Locked Tomb’s dedications has an AO3 account where you can read all of his novel-length Homestuck fic. The same person also features in the acknowledgements, and I don’t know how ironic the author is when she implies that she still thinks of him as her moirail.
  • The Astounding Award winning author of the WFA-winning Greenhollow Duology served as the beta reader for the free online version of the space opera romance novel Winter’s Orbit. She had to resort to obscene stick figures to explain why the sex scene wasn’t working yet.
  • Naomi Novik. Basically everything about Naomi Novik, in perpetuity.

“you don’t like the proliferation of terms like Unalive outside of TikTok because you realize that you’re aging out of youth culture and it makes you uncomfortable!”

no I don’t like it because there’s something INCREDIBLY dystopian about being forced to soften terms for basic parts of the human experience like death and sex (and even more so terms for oppressed minorities- call me a “le-dollar sign-bian” and I will bite you) purely because advertisers and corporations demand it

The idea that young people are getting used to not being able to speak in public about sex, queerness etc without talking around censors, and see this as normal and not a problem, scares me tbh.

The fact that people are so comfortable with being censored that they Voluntarily censor themselves on words and topics that aren’t even being limited is a terrifying sign

every so often i remember how fucking buckshit whacked out Homestuck actually is. Every single character, no matter how charming and endearing they seem, is a loser. The author is a character within the story, who is killed halfway through and the job of writing the story is taken over by the story's villain. Said villain is so misogynist that he wants to destroy the whole universe. Every single character dies, at least once, the only exception being a random background NPC who delivers mail. The entire plot is a vehicle to get one creepy ventriloquist dummy from point A to point B. The ICP is there too.

what if everyone referred to him solely as "princess diana's ex-husband"

we take you now live to the shamefully expensive spectacle: the coronation of princess diana's ex-husband

Honestly I miss the energy Tumblr had when the first Pacfic Rim movie came out. Everybody was talking about who they were drift compatible with and that was like a huge compliment. Ppl were drawing Kaijus, and Jaegers, naming ‘em. It was a better time

the ace attorney prosecutor defence attorney rivalry is so so so funny because it’s always like ‘in another life, perhaps, in another world, had my path gone differently… i could have stood on the other side of the courtroom. with you, or maybe, still against? the whims of fate…’ and it’s two guys who have the same job

ace attorney is so funny cause the trials will have you fighting for your life and have a strong theme of corruption and how people in power can get away with multiple crimes such as blackmailing and LITERAL MURDER and then you win the case and have some weird girl going "YIPEEEE!!! we did it Mr. Wright!!!!!" and then Edgeworth shows up to have some insanely homosexual moment

really enjoy that engarde asks to call his lawyer while talking to phoenix and that when he does and phoenix’s phone rings he picks it up and says ‘hello?’ as if he’s expecting someone else and then they just continue the conversation over the phone while looking at each other. especially enjoy that he does this bit twice and that phoenix goes along with it both times. obviously indicative of something deeply wrong with engarde but arguably even more of something wrong with phoenix

"Hey this person (who happens to be fat) is hot"

"Hmmm... sounds fetishistic to me" Shut Your Fuck Up Lmao

If anything I think it's weirder for people to be like "Oh there's no way you're into people who look like this unless you have nefarious intentions" like okay you can surely hear why that makes you the worse person right
