The Ides Of March
Conservation status: Least Concern
Classification: Non-native, non-invasive

This meme population has persisted in the pre-internet ecosystem since 44 BC, but for over a millennium the meme remained at very low population levels. Introduction to the theater habitats of England in approximately 1599 by an early meme ecologist (also notable for the introduction of such memes as Damned Spot and To Be Or Not To Be) caused a population boom that has led to the continued stable population of Ides of March despite the extinction or near extinction of the Ides of other months and all known Nones and Kalends.

The Ides Of March, like many other calendar memes such as April 25th (The Perfect Date), Thursday The 20th, and It's October 3rd, has a life cycle that can confuse amateur memeologists. These memes benefit greatly from the presence of scheduled posts in the ecosystem, appearing absent until their highly specific time, when the memes all bloom simultaneously and dominate the dashes of many users.

Sure there's zombies killing and eating people on the street but those people are not dying from the virus they're dying from comorbidities. For instance, that guy we saw getting eaten on the way into work today clearly died from blood loss, not infection, plus he already had a heart condition. People with preexisting conditions are just going to have to take care of themselves. Say it with me, "They're all already dead to me." See, that feels a lot better now doesn't it?

Good because you still have to go to work. No we're not paying you extra. Yes we're doubling grocery prices. No you don't qualify for disability. Or healthcare. Or a home.

Look, if you get bitten, you can stay home for one day, I guess 😒, but then you need to come in early. We're really short staffed at the moment, despite our company's profits being higher than ever. In fact we may be laying some of you off next month. You don't mind working off the clock right?

Also you look silly with that protective gear. We're gonna harass you for it, not like institutionally but just socially. Who cares if a zombie attacks you? Who cares if we invite them into the building? You don't need to defend yourself, you're just overreacting. If you get bitten just tell everyone the festering bite mark is from a different animal, that's what we all do.

And hey, don't worry so much. It's endemic, which means we don't have to keep track of how many people are dying from it anymore. Just look at those numbers! It's only killed 2,000 people in America this week! That's basically nobody! We're back to normal!

If everything starts tasting like rotting meat for the rest of your life, it's probably something else. If you experience brain fog or you forget things constantly or you're tired all the time after even minor physical activity, it's just because you're lazy. Yes every other virus you ever get will also be increasingly worse but that's just a coincidence. Those viruses just happen to be exponentially worse now.

Plus, those few weeks during the lockdown were terrible for my mental health. I just can't keep living like that, so we have to go back to normal life, which now involves people biting each other and twitching uncontrollably and rotting visibly.

You can't expect the world to wait for you. "Already dead to me," remember?

for people who would like to support anti-covid (and anti-eugenics) policies: International Long Covid Awareness Day is March 15! A lot of anti-covid advocacy orgs around the world are planning various things; please consider supporting one near you!

For people in the US: Long Covid DC is planning a protest on March 15th 2024.

They are asking people to attend in person in Washington DC at the Lincoln Memorial (masks required, extra masks available if you need one), or virtually on twitch.

You can also participate ahead of time by emailing them stories you'd like to be shared at the event (either text or videos!)

if you can't participate but still want to support: they are asking people to help them raise awareness about this! If you can directly share their posts, or news articles about the protest, that's probably the most helpful, but following their socials and just clicking the news articles still helps them in the algorithms! (Forbes; Mercury News; The Sick Times; USA Today; US News.)

this holiday season, don’t forget about the people in our community who are institutionalized. Psych wards, inpatient units, and residential treatment centers are difficult and traumatizing places even on a good day, and holidays can be even more challenging days bringing reminders of everything we’re missing, spending times away from our loved ones, and having a harder time coping with the every day violence of incarceration. institutionalization is dehumanizing, creates forced isolation and cuts mad/mentally ill/neurodivergent people off from our support systems. it’s so crucial for us on the outside to make sure that people currently institutionalized know that they have not been forgotten, they matter and have a place outside of the psych ward, and that they deserve respect, care, and support.

consider trying to deliver care packages to a psych hospital near you this winter. find a hospital or ward, call a visitor information number to ask for restrictions on what you can bring, and deliver some small things to bring a tiny bit of joy into some patients day. some good things to bring can be books, some types of fidget toys, packaged snacks, and letters and cards with words of support.

if you’re in the UK, the campaign for psychiatric abolition is organizing to deliver care packages to psych hospitals throughout the UK-consider coordinating with them.

please don’t forget about people locked up, this month and always. one of the biggest contributing factors that enables psych wards to get away with abuse is the fact that so many people are willing and eager to discard mad/mentally ill/neurodivergent people and don’t want to embrace the fact that we are here and that we are living in your neighborhood. it’s a lot easier to get away with abusing us when everyone’s okay with forgetting that we exist and wanting to push us to the edges of society. just. do what you can to remind people psychiatrically incarcerated that they are not forgotten, they are valued, and they are cared. it means more than I can say.

like in general I am tired of fighting about masks as a pandemic thing

instead of fighting about paid leave and not letting employers force people to come to work while covid positiv

because we need to the systemic things so much more than any individual wearing or not wearing a mask matters

but also like. it has a smaller impact yes but it still has an impact

and this sort of approach by a hospital ER team is going to cause preventable deaths. and it's making me upset and angry and breaking my heart and just.

scream

Avatar

and like yes. doctors/nurses/techs/etc who don't mask, or mask improperly is also pretty expected, and those who don't disinfect things or don't wash their hands seem to be getting more common as covid makes anti-infection precautions "political."

so I'm used to it happening on a general level?

but.

if you have decided that I am so contagious that it is worth putting me in the super fancy, cutting edge technology isolation suite because I am "highly contagious"

maybe? then? it might be worth? pulling the mask two inches up your face? putting one on at all? washing? your? hands????

Avatar

like! to be clear! ER staff having never heard of EDS or POTS or MCAS is. disappointing but not unusual, let alone surprising

Avatar

had to go to the ER with an injury (yay, EDS!) and what I explained was an MCAS reaction, only for the ER to decide that that isn't how the immune system works and I was clearly infected with something and put me in super fancy high-contagion isolation

(like. super fancy. there were types of anti-transmission technology I've never seen before)

but. on the human side of it? some nurses with the "mask below the nose" thing going on, some with no mask at all, no handwashing, the worst glove protocol I've ever seen, and the doctor using one of the gloves he'd just used to examine me to wipe below his nose.

and just. screaming

usamericans-

this is probably going around here like several times, but you can order 4 more free covid tests starting today. if you didn't order any back in september/october (I hadn't heard about it, so I hadn't gotten more tests), you might be able to get up to 8. it just told me 'hey you can get more' and let me do it again, it was very easy to do.

if you're like 'well, I should leave that for people who need it!' don't. order them. stockpile them. the more the program is used, the more likely it is that it will remain a funded program and send the message that covid-19 is still a concern. use the program. there's no needs testing, no nothing, just put in your name and address. if nothing else, you can give a couple to a friend who has a larger family, since it's a per household thing and some people might need more or less, or a mutual aid group in your area, or something. the more people who do this, the more likely they are to keep reupping this program.
