Hiya! So I was raised a Catholic but practiced witchcraft for a good year or so. I've recently started going to Christian church for the past few months and am loving it and even getting baptised this weekend! But I miss my witchcraft practices and am feeling that calling again, but i'm scared. Will God punish me for practicing again?

I don’t see why. Only very specific parts of witchcraft are forbidden, and witchcraft was used in the Bible by quite a few people who are never admonished for it. My Bible and Witchcraft series has four parts and hasn’t made it out of Genesis yet.

A spooky tune for your Halloweening. Recorded at Sunday’s “Halloween Beyond Belief” it’s “Grim Grinning Ghosts” performed by Craig Cackowski, Busy Philipps, Annie Savage, Autumn Reeser, Janet Varney, and Hal Lublin. Music by Jordan Katz & the Elements of Style

This is the theme song of The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. It was composed by Buddy Baker, with lyrics written by X Atencio.

You may have heard that we’re doing ONE MORE BIG SHOW before calling it quits for quite some time!

It’s true. And that show is on Saturday, December 17th, at the Theater at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles! It’s our annual Thrilling Adventure Hour Holiday Funaround starring all of the WorkJuice Players and special guests!

The Ace is an enormous, beautiful theater. This looks to be a special evening of comedy, music, and holiday cheer. We sincerely hope you’ll join us.

Hey! Wondering if you knew of an original source for the claim that Nicnevin/Neachneohain translates to "daughter of Scathach." For the life of me I can't figure out how that would work linguistically, nor can I find an original source for that translation to clarify matters. Do you happen to know where I could find it?

It’s a two-step etymology, from the fact that her half-sisters are saints — Lasair, Latiaran, and Inghean Bhuidhe. I know among Scáthach’s worshippers there’s a suggestion that Nicnevin might be another name for one of the three.

It’s been awhile since I read it, but the earliest I found I THINK is from The Life of St. Lasair which was published in a journal called Ériu in 1910 or 1911.

I will have to dig back through my research. I didn’t put it on Wikipedia and whoever did hasn’t sourced it, but I know I’ve read it elsewhere.

Talk to your house

Your house is a sentient being with it’s own spirit and soul. Some people identify this spirit as their household deities or friendly house spirits. But some people have altogether forgotten how important the spirit of their house is. Talk to your house. Houses that have been ignored tend to be dull, tired and susceptible to hauntings and negative energies.  So talk to your house, listen to its aches and pains, say hello. Tell it that you come in peace, tell it that you are there to listen to it speak. Be grateful to your house. And watch the energies of your home transform themselves into joy.

My house had the slightest air of a sulk to it when I moved in. Listening to it helped.

This is actually the first thing I ask people when they start bringing up “my house has a sudden oppressive atmosphere,” stories to me, as we walk into a completely unhaunted, normal house.

Usually as I spin whatever they’ve given me to pay for the magic, look around and go: “Have you talked at it lately? Checked all the parts? It’s lonely and you’re ignoring it. Have a nice cuppa and a chat with it. Thanks for the blanket!”

Before you defend males being witches I think you need to step back and realize why people are hesitant about involving males in witchcraft. Historically males were the ones burning and murdering females for witchcraft. It's no coincidence why women are more strongly associated with life/death, magic, etc. It's not transphobic to say this and that men deserve no acceptance in something women were persecuted (and in some areas still are). Women own witchcraft.

I’m sorry if you thought you’d be informing me of something I had no clue of,  but earnestly this whole “Women own witchcraft” is the very most idiotic, Euro centric argument I have ever heard in Witch Discourse.

You need to get off your racist, sexist high horse right this instant.

I’ve done research and experienced witchcraft in my own culture and have knowledge of the witch hunts of the 1600s. It’s not a case of “The evil males murdering women!!!” It was a case of both women and men who used their religion to murder people horrifically and senselessly out of ignorance and fear. Both genders were the perpetrators and victims, both genders were the victims. Some women are more in tune to their spirituality and open to witchcraft due to the way western culture has brought women and men act. In other cultures, men are more likely to be spiritual leaders, or it may be perfectly egalitarian.

Saying that women own witchcraft because men in their culture fucked shit up for witches is essentially saying that atheists and pagans alone own witchcraft because Christians fucked shit up for witches.

Saying that women own witchcraft is like saying that poc own witchcraft because of imperialism’s damage to poc’s culture.

Saying that women own witchcraft is like saying that only people born to witch families own witchcraft.

Inherently, all people, males included, have the same amount of spiritual potential and energy. The way some people’s witchcraft works is recognizing that we are all witches, we are all beings with energies and spirituality and we choose to develop and partake in our own. Blocking off half the population for crimes they did not commit is disgusting.

Not to mention how GODDAMN RACIST THIS IS!

I come from Miami, and in Miami I’ve experienced a lot of the Santeria culture. Here, people mostly talk about it when there’s dead chickens washing up on shores after sacrifices or when dead animals are dropped off in bags at the courthouse, and I’m going to assume that you think witchcraft is revamped spells from the 1600s where animal bones are cutely replaced with some other herb followed by crystals sitting on the shelf.

However..

Santería is a culture of witches. Santería is very valid witchcraft, it is sometimes bloody and not cute and not adapted to Western Culture but that is the goddamn point. There are males that practice witchcraft in this culture, in fact leaders of all genders.

Native Indigenous culture have had Shamanism and related spiritualistic religions, there are so many tribes where witchcraft comes in the forms of women, men and non binary people such as the complex Two Spirit identity doing rituals, sacrifices, meditations… witchcraft is the practice of magick, and guess who practices magick?

These babies! See the things in grey! Those are called non western civilizations! Theses are places where thousands of individual communities exist, all with their own religions and native cultures! And most of them have all practiced some form of magick! Both men and women and non binary people!

If you’re a crystal witch, male or female or nonbinary Shamans probably made or sold you your crystals. Your lore could be from a Jewish Rabbi, of Jewish Mysticism. Or the Muslim intertwining of pagan and occultism. Or it could be the literal God Of Witchcraft, Thoth, in Egyptian culture. It could be an Alchemist, such as Gilles de Rais or Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, all males murdered for their practicing witchcraft. The masks and skulls bought may very well be from Ghana tribes that were used as Talismans, or certain artifacts and rituals may come from Benin, West African tribes and communities.

You do not, never have, never will own witchcraft. No one ever will. And if you think men should be excluded, then only female, magick inherited African tribes victim to imperialism should own witchcraft.

Thank you for reading, and fuck Euro Centric supremacy.

Many people continue to think avoiding meat as infrequently as once a week will make a significant difference to the climate. But according to one recent study, even if Americans eliminated all animal protein from their diets, they would reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by only 2.6%.

According to our research at the University of California, Davis, if the practice of Meatless Monday were to be adopted by all Americans, we’d see a reduction of only 0.5%.

Shit its almost like the real problem is corporate greed causing mass pollution on an unimaginable scale.

it’s not just corporate greed. it’s also piss poor land management and agricultural practices.

you could actually use cows to stop climate change.

but capitalism doesn’t want to talk about that. nor does the USDA

^^^^^^

Not all land is suited for the same use. You can’t grow veg everywhere, and you really shouldn’t try - California is on FUCKING FIRE because corps have been doing so and have literally sunk the water table.

Lots of land out west is far better suited for livestock, and that’s just how the environment works. Trying to grow piss-poor citrus in cali is just a waste, switch to goats already.

What further makes the water table situation worse is that our modern culture doesn’t believe in collecting rain water. We cover the ground with hardscape (read: pavement, concrete, etc.) and so the water can’t soak into the ground. It floods into storm drains and gets wooshed off someone else entirely.

So our water tables can’t recover because we covered the ground in concrete. And instead of using water we collect from the sky, which is generally better for us than ground water, we just keep using the ground water and going “why won’t the water come back??????”

And then as we use ground water to water our plants n shit, we are just depositing all of the ground minerals into the land, and thereby putting salt n shit in the earth, and we go “why doesn’t shit grow like it should?????”

That doesn’t even get into the issues of monoculture vs. polyculture and how our monoculture agricultural practices literally destroy the land.

We are literally shooting ourselves in the foot.

Ugh, yeah, closer to my home it’s the monoculture bullshit with fucktons of industrial fertilizer pouring down the Mississippi Delta, and “omg why is there a giant ass dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, WHAT COULD HAVE DONE THIS?”

like those fucking sugar cane motherfuckers in FL, “oops, WHY IS RED TIDE WORSE THAN IT WAS IN THE 70′S I WONDER.”

I hate monoculture farms. They kill the land and water and a huge amount of the crop gets thrown away and AAAGGGHHHH

fwiw i feel your pain.

The bible speak out against witchcraft, oracles and psychics numerous times. But by mentioning something you are therefore validating proof of its existance….right?

...I technically have a series about actual witchcraft in the Bible, from Jacob using sympathetic magic to manipulate livestock, to Rachel and Leah using mandrake charms for fertility, to Joseph and his various forms of divination. There’s more, I’ve just never finished writing it — but witchcraft is all over the Bible

I personally identify as an episcopal christian witch but lately I have found myself at a standstill with my christian faith. I am afraid to touch my tarot and crystals. I have been unable to take communion because of college and I feel unworthy to pray...I don't know what to do and its tearing me apart. Any advice?

There’s a lot to unpack here. First, why has college gotten in the way of taking communion? Are there no churches accessible to you? First, you should know that the Episcopal Church has full communion with ELCA churches, so they will accept you for communion. Also, Morovian churches should as well. If neither of these are options, then here is what I will say: communion is a very important sacrament. It is worth taking even if from imperfect Christians that do not share your values or morals. It is worth taking even from the creepy Christian club at your school.

Now, if the communion issue has to do with a ritual you are not completing (confession for instance), then I’m not quite sure how to help you. I will only encourage you to find a way and time to participate in this rite.

Second, you should know that stagnation is unavoidable and it’s not always bad. We’ve done ourselves a great disservice by insisting we always be moving and changing and growing at all times. Perhaps this is just a time of rest, to enjoy God and the world around you. Perhaps you are called to grow in other areas and need to wait to cultivate your spiritual life at this time. That’s ok too.

Do keep practicing your faith. I cannot stress this enough. Even if you don’t feel like it, please pray, work spells, and read. You are so loved by God. Maybe take some time to call out your greviances to God. I have found that complaining has helped on many occasions. So have the prophets. 😉

And finally, if you really feel a call to grow at this time, then please find a community of believers in person or in spirit. I often read books from theologians when I feel my community is failing me. I enjoy Brian McClaren (for the most part.) Jerome Berryman is also encouraging for me as a children’s director.

Thank you for reaching out. I hope it is soon well with your soul.

Witchcraft facts:

Yes, men were persecuted for practicing witchcraft and tried as witches. In some countries, the majority of people accused of witchcraft were men. Here’s a book about it. Here are some stories about men who were executed for witchcraft. Stop saying that only women can be witches because men weren’t persecuted for witchcraft.

Witch is a gender neutral term. If you’re going to argue that witch was only ever used to describe women (it wasn’t) then you should also know that historically witches were seen as malevolent magical practitioners. Many cultures call good magical practitioners something different. One example is the benandanti, who fought witches to ensure their community’s crops didn’t fail.

In sum, stop being assholes about this, seriously.
