hot artists don't gatekeep

I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

This is cool as hell. Here are some resources I use. Brushes for Clip Studio: Frenden - great inking and pencil brushes Robogart - great texture & wash brushes

The only real life inking brush pen I use is the Zebra brush pen (size: super fine) .

Public domain wallpaper/rug/fabric patterns: https://www.rawpixel.com/search?page=1&path=3.sub_topic-688&sort=curated

You can also search for public domain patterns on Etsy and buy relatively cheap high resolution scanned collections.

Normies talking about getting whiplash from recipe blogs. You know nothing

[ID: An AO3 author’s note reading, “Sorry for vanishing, I did a little too much research on cults an coercive control for Damian’s arc, and then realized I was raised in a cult, and THEN I ran away to a fishing town cabin on the other side of the country and had to start learning to be a person in the real world. I also forgot how to write. But I’m learning again, so I’m back now! Have some more.” The “I” in “I was raised in a cult” is emphasized by sparking emojis, and the note is ended with heart emojis. /end ID]

Aaaand THIS is one of the many reasons why it’s not only not a bad thing to portray dark subject matter, but EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to do so!! You can learn a lot when writing, and others can learn a lot when reading! This can save lives, dudes.

I am so proud of the author though. That took multiple kinds of courage at once. Good job, author.

Hi! I’m the original author from ao3!

I want to thank everyone for such hilarious and kind additions/replies/tags on this post, they’ve been so amazing to read. They’ve meant more to me than you guys know. ❤️

I also want to add some information for anyone who wants to know more about recognizing the signs that you might be in a high control group.

High control groups can be small or large, religious or not, clubs, schools, online servers, friend groups, etc.

No human is invulnerable because we all have brains and emotions that can be played like a fiddle. Knowing the red flags can help us all keep ourselves safer!

igotout.org
BITE model of understanding thought and behavior control
International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA)
Crisis Text Line (highly recommend, especially if you’re not in a safe place to discuss things on the phone)

Please always protect yourself as best you can and never be afraid to reach out for help—even if you’re just wondering, even if you’re not sure about something.

No safe group or person will EVER be mad at you for being cautious and taking things slow, or for changing your mind at ANY point. You’re the one who gets to decide whether you join or stay with a group, no matter what they threaten or love-bomb you with.

If you’re not safe, there’s help.

If you feel trapped, there’s help.

If people are being actively hurt, good people want to listen, understand, and help.

We all deserve freedom. I’m grateful every morning I wake up that I get to live it now, even though it’s hard and I have a long way to go. Thank you for walking this journey with me, for one brief moment or for years, and helping me—and others like me—not be alone.

Take care, stay safe, and happy fanfiction reading!

hey ao3 can you like give the extra $38k you made from this month’s funds drive to charity

You know it legally is a charity, right?

If x charity aims for £10, but gets £15, would you expect then to give back the extra five or give it then to another charity? No. Any extra costs go into the “rainy day” fund; sometimes servers crash or break, sometimes false reports are made that require the legal team, sometimes you need to hire coders or what not to implement new features or fix bugs or deal with broken code …

The money they aimed for is the bare minimum, which goes towards things like basic server costs and domain names and legal advice and so forth, but they don’t just “pocket” the rest (as people claim). It’s not a business. It has no advertisements. It needs some “rainy day” cash to function.

You can’t ask a charity to give money to another charity.

It needs what it gets to function and improve.

kiena-tesedale replied to this post

They don’t “pocket” excess money. They have a publicly accessible budget - waaaay more info than most charities, in fact. In it, you can clearly see where each dollar goes. (Also, you are vastly underestimating either how much traffic AO3 gets or how much servers/hosting costs.)

In my experience, people who don’t work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. I’m talking “more than the library of congress” crazy. The only reason it doesn’t require Netflix levels of data serving is that it’s text based rather than video.

AO3 is in the top 300 websites in the world, and the top 100 in the US. It is the number 2 literature website.

Number 2 in the entire world. JSTOR is 20.

It sees about 6 million people a day. About 250k an hour. Each of those people is loading multiple pages, many are running searches that execute on literally hundreds of potential variables per search. The demands involved are astronomical.

JSTOR, btw, makes 85 million dollars a year.

It’s 18 ranks below AO3′s traffic, and takes in 650 times the amount of money.

But let’s say you think that’s an unfair comparison. Would you say that the Project Gutenberg Literature Archival Group- another text based archive that handles literature operating outside traditional copyright requirements- is more similar?

Because it sees all of 4% of the traffic that AO3 handles.

Care to guess its budget?

Double that of AO3.

AO3 is doing shit on the kind of shoestring budget that I fully, 100% cannot comprehend. And that’s just the archival service.

The 130k also pays for the OTW’s legal team, which they use to defend the right of fandom to fucking exist.

It’s absolutely batshit fucked up that people are fighting to have the OTW defunded and AO3 shut down. They are the only organized group that actually stands directly between fandom- all the art and the fics and the vids and the music and the chats and the memes and everything we love about interactive, transformative work- and an incalculable amount of lawsuits.

ok im obsessed w this tag

once in grade 6 I saw a 'pottery making club' in a ditch on the schoolyard- I assume at some point someone realized there was actually good quality clay in the ditch and when I walked up there were about a dozen 12 year olds sitting around the few girls who had brought their water bottles out to mix the clay, and a designated spot to put the finished bowls and tablets, and people going off and collecting sticks to make designs with and i really think that's the natural state of the human race

In elementary school I learned that you can make paint out of certain sedimentary rocks on the playground if you crushed them and mixed with water and at one point I had up to 25 kindergarten through third graders making cave paintings on the underside of the slides

The nature of man is such that every so often, someone recreates the neolithic era.

Yeah, every recess

@lisxdumbr excuse me as I borrow your tag for a moment, cause we’re onto something.

Rent-lowering gunshots aside, I think this highlights a pretty fundamental quality to tumblr memes, which is they’re meant to be fun, not funny.

Most Goncharov content aren’t funny. They don’t make you laugh as an audience. In fact, there’s some serious and awe inspiring quality fanarts, music, fanfics, and analysis on a non-existing flim. It’s not about making the funniest joke, it’s about having fun making the joke.

Tumblr memes aren’t meant to entertain a passive audience. The entertainment value is in the participation. And this quality is present in a lot of long-form tumblr memes. Colour theory, urban gothic (short lived but glorious), hawkeye initiative (short lived but glorious), making shitpost arguments into shakespeare, @theshitpostcalligrapher (excuse the tag) and other shitpost calligraphy. A lot of these memes are about taking silly things seriously. And even passively reblogging these memes are about participation. “I can take this seriously too.” Or, in Goncharov’s case, “yeah I’ll help collectively gaslight the internet”.

Another big part about sharing it isn’t about how funny the joke is, but how impress you are with the effort. As an audience you can feel the love artists/musicians/writers put into their Goncharov fanwork, and can’t help but have respect.

This same logic goes for how coffeeshop fics are fun to write, but they aren’t funny. The charm for the reader is that someone loved these characters as much as you did.

In contrast, when you look at viral tweets, they’re often one-shots. They’re very funny and witty but you don’t tend to get the same degree of repetition and variations. Because twitter is built for consumption and snappier participation, and the increasingly algorithm-driven navigation makes content more competitive, which means quality lies in individual tweets, and not in the whole phenomenon.

tldr; Tumblr memes/jokes are about how fun they are to make/share. Twitter jokes are about how fun they are to consume.

Tumblr humor is about being involved in something stupid. Otherwise we wouldn’t enjoy reblogging Color of the Sky, Color Theory, Out of Touch Thursday, Had to Do it To ‘Em, or any of the plethora of “no you mean [initial incorrect thing]. [ initial topic] is [also incorrect thing].” jokes.

They’re not meant to be funny, they’re meant to be silly and engaging.

Tumblr actually has memes is what it is. Like classical definition memes. Twitter has quips that are forced on the rest of the internet by botnets creating artificial virality. They aren’t memes because there’s no in-group knowledge. They’re just ten-cent comedy you’d get from walking down a busy street long enough to over hear from random strangers.

We make our fun interactive here, it’s why so many of us get annoyed at things like ‘prev tags’ just screenshot it ffs, get involved in the joke.

What the initial tweet also failed to realize is that Goncharov was never about bringing more users to the platform. Many Tumblr users actually dread when there are large groups of people from other social media that come here all at once. Goncharov was for us, not them. As long as we were having fun, it was fulfilling its role.

Twitter is standing on a soapbox to briefly shout at the crowd. Tumblr is climbing around on a playground and messing around in a sandbox with a bunch of your friends (and also all the other park-goers you don’t know but hey they’re there to play too, so it’s fine)

Since they don’t teach gay sex ed in school let me tell gay guys and anyone else that wants to use the back door that douching is bad for you. It will cause long term problems.

Also starving yourself all day will not work because sometimes it can take up to two or three days for something to move through you.

Just eat a bunch of fiber and use the bathroom at least an hour or two before your booty call if you can. If you hate eating fiber just get yourself some fiber pills to take with meals. If you eat enough fiber the section after the colon should remain relatively clean on its own. Just wash the outside part. Not your insides. Those clean themselves.

Also if he shames you for anything that happens by accident in the bedroom and/or refuses to use a condom he’s a jerk-wad and an idiot and you should dump him.

Yes! It dries out your colon and makes you more susceptible to micro-tears in your anal walls and makes it more likely that you’ll get constipated. There’s also a small but real chance that you could get a perforated bowel which is a medical emergency. It also washes away a natural layer of mucus in there which, while gross, is necessary.

Doing it once in a long while is probably fine but it’s not necessary unless you’re doing something super intense that goes up into your colon and you’re not willing to clean up afterwards.

If you absolutely must, use clean douching equipment and lukewarm water with a teaspoon of salt per cup of water dissolved in it. The salt mixed in will keep the water from dehydrating you because yeah, that’s another risk of douching. Your body has a very specific balance of salt it wants and plain water will sap away some of that.

Also remember to use lube, kids! It reduces your risk of getting an STD or a minor injury!

Not applicable to me, but I've always been an advocate for inclusive sex education.

Stay safe!

Douching is also bad for vaginas for anyone on this thread with those. They are self-cleaning as well and putting soap up there can mess with your ph balance and increase your risk of yeast infections. Just take a piss before and after sex to avoid a UTI and let your parts take care of themselves.

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

>:)c

May I present to you, nationalclothing.org?

It doesn't have everything, but it's still my first source when researching traditional clothing from other cultures.

There's also this resource on historical fashion: Claire’s Historical Fashion Reference & Resources

another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this

here are some resources for Indian clothing archives:

Purushu Arie's blog; started when he was studying at NIFT, the blogger has gone on to become a leader in the neo-traditional fashion scene in India.

if anyone knows more please add links !

This Sunday afternoon I was running for a tram and there was a knock at the door

I live in a city where you don't use the front door so thought "I'm already on my way out, I'll see who it is when I get round the front" (there's too much stuff in the way to even open the front door)

So I get to the front door and

... OK yeah I was a bit surprised.

A few friends know about this meme, live in the same city as me and know my address.

Four were at home and had yet to find a walrus with which to do this bit.

Two were about to leave the house to be somewhere else (same place I was going).

One is apparently in France.

Not one of them admits knows who did this.

I'm not ruling out the possibility they all know exactly who did it.

We're trying to figure out who it was on Discord and virtually everyone is saying "I wanted to, I planned on, but I didn't have the time" or "I couldn't find an appropriate walrus" or "I'd have given it fairy wings"

I feel like I'm in a reverse Murder On The Orient Express situation (spoilers I guess, sorry) where everyone had motive no-one had means but the victim just died anyway. Or in this case, received a walrus.

I'm being absolutely Agatha Christie'd on with a plush pinniped.
