Villains need hugs too

Artist, lurker, fangirls on villains quite a lot. Because Evil is both sexier and way more adorable.

So, I am wicked behind on posting! I had the ~malaise~ for a while and was having a hard time working on art, but I did finally clean up the scan of Xie Lian as the Hanged Man, and I am going to try to get back into the swing of things.

I debated whether I was gonna take his clothes off for this for a long time, but in the end I couldn't get a sketch with the robes in that didn't look odd - it's very hard to do long skirts upside down, even when you're taking as lackadaisical an approach to gravity as I did here.

In the end, I wasn't able to push the lighting/atmospheric effects as far as I wanted in this, but I'm still pretty pleased overall with how it came out. Something to continue to work on in the future.

Back in... I want to say May? for Reasons I ended up watching all of Nirvana in Fire twice in two weeks. I regret nothing, all my choices were excellent, but then I was left with a lot of feelings about how I wanted to see Jingyan with his hair down. I am sometimes a simple soul. Also, it had been long enough since the last time I drew a full background that I forgot that they're terrible.

This is also the piece that caused me to realize I need to do a more detailed re-swatching of all my paint, because I did _not_ have a proper grasp on which colors lifted too easily, and would, hypothetically, force me to try to recolor a very detailed design in colored pencil, which is not the best tool for it.

Progress pics for my current wip, Hua Cheng as Death. I have departed pretty far from traditional tarot iconography here - he should be on a horse, and there should be skeletons.

And now to discover if I have the technical skill to actually execute my vision here. Both black and red are kind of challenging colors to shade - it doesn't take much to make either read as a different color. And god knows I did myself no favors adding a lake of blood, but I had to compensate for the skeletons I didn't add _somehow_.

And now we'll see if I can push the values dark enough to execute my Vision.

Hello! If you don't mind, what scanner do you have? Your traditional work looks so nice!

Thank you!

It's an Epson Perfection v600 Photo scanner, which is kinda pricey, but which is worth the cost if you do a lot of art scanning - it handles color very well, and goes up to an insane resolution, which is the biggest factor in getting good scans. I would recommend it as a good option. (My last scanner, a cheap HP printer combo, could not handle either pinks or oranges at _all_; the amount of time this one saves in color correction is substantial.

Still working on cleaning up Binghe, but meanwhile I have at last started the pencils for Xie Lian as the Hanged Man, which was the winner in the What Should I Draw Next poll. I took most of his clothes off because figuring out how to make robes look right while upside down and tied up was hard.

Pencils done, so today I'm working on inking Xie Lian. I'm pretty happy with how the composition came out, even if I did have to take off most of his clothes to make it work.

Alright, six thousand maple leaves later, inking is done at last! (Why is there wheat you ask? Idk, the Hanged Man gives me strong corn king/harvest sacrifice vibes.) In general, I'm super pleased with this composition; looking forward to starting the watercolor tomorrow.

Day 1 of the watercolor; first pass on the skin, and starting to base in the colors of the hair and the background.

Slowly plodding my way through this tree so I can figure out the values and get the background sorted, which I need to do to figure out how dark to go with the hair and skin. Still, it's coming along.

Progress has been slow, largely because I've been busy, but we're getting there. Most of what's left is the sky, the borders, and some details. I think I'll be able to finish next weekend.

And, done. Cleaned up version will be posted later, but on the whole I'm pretty pleased with how this came out.

Meanwhile, I finished cleaning the scan of Tarot Card # 2, Binghe as the Emperor. Traditionally depicted on a throne with a mountain behind him, holding an orb and a scepter, which you will see I took some liberties with, the Emperor represents authority, control, structure, etc when upright, and tyrany, recklessness, lack of discipline, etc reversed. So this one was always gonna be Binghe.
