IMPORTANT: SERIOUS MEMORY LEAK

tl;dr Change all of your passwords everywhere in the below list, immediately. This is easily one of the worst security problems in recent history and not an exaggerated, unsubstantiated panic response.

Cloudflare, one of the largest CDN providers that power a huge number of highly popular websites, has been affected by a severe bug that exposed the raw contents of Cloudflare server memory to the public.

A principal engineer at Cloudflare stated: “Memory leak” in the title is misleading. This is memory disclosure, and it’s easily one of the worst security incidents of all time. What is here is disclosure of arbitrary encrypted data (but the plaintext is disclosed), for millions of domains. That data, which could include passwords, credit card numbers, and other secret data, is now sitting in caches distributed all over the world. You can even query some of it from Google right now. Simply awful.

Discord, Reddit, Crunchyroll and Humble Bundle are four of the major affected sites that you guys may be using. Check if other services that you use frequently are on the list.

Hey everyone, just to be on the safe side, check the list and, even if it is not there, change your password on your most sensitive and important websites or e-mails right now. This is a pretty big deal, so please tell your friends and spread the message.

Yeesh, this looks like a bad one. Patreon appears to be affected too, so anyone who uses that should be aware.

what’s the difference between ninjas and stage crew?

ninjas move silently around walls, stage crew moves walls around silently.

BUT YOU KNOW WHAT IS SO GREAT

The depiction of ninjas as dressed all in black comes from traditional Japanese theatre.  Actual historical ninjas didn’t dress in black because it’s conspicuous as hell in the daytime and even at night in the dark a person dressed in solid black tends to stand out; dark grey or blue is better for hiding in shadows.  Usually they just wore ordinary, like, people clothes which are far better for blending into your surroundings in than a specialised professional costume.

BUT YOU KNOW WHO DID DRESS ALL IN BLACK LIKE THAT

the stage crew in a theatre

and it was a generally accepted convention that the black-clad stagehands were invisible, so they could be on stage at the same time as the actors and move things around and the audience would just mentally CG them out

but then one day because a director was a GENIUS, during an otherwise normal performance of a play, suddenly a stagehand stepped forward, assassinated one of the main characters and then melted back into the background

THEY WERE A NINJA

AND THE AUDIENCE LOST THEIR MINDS BECAUSE IT WAS AMAZING

and eventually it lost its mind-blow value because after a while everyone had seen a play like that, so although the “stagehands wear black and are invisible” convention continued, the new “ninjas wear black and are invisible until they choose to strike” convention became established, and from then on fictional ninjas have just worn black because it looks so cool.

So in fact the answer to “What’s the difference between ninjas and stage crew?” is “You will never know until they stab you.”

Okay this is the first time I have heard the second half of this information and it’s so much better now.

Somewhere along the way fanart become worth more than fanfic to fandom.

Artists have Patreon accounts where people pay real money to view their art early or to access special pictures like scraps or tutorials.

Whereas writers are expected to produce more and more, faster, for nothing in return. No one wants to see our “scraps” and writers who do provide Tips and Tricks often get crap for “policing” how people write.

And it falls into the prevailing notion that somehow writing is something easy, something anyone can do.

This isn’t an attack on fanartists. You deserve to receive some sort of compensation and accolades for your work. And so do fanauthors.

Writing fic is hard work. Yes, anyone can type out a story, same as anyone can pick up a pencil to draw, but what makes the difference, what makes a good piece is the experience and talent of an author. It’s all the stories no one saw, it’s all the writing books we’ve read, it’s the classes we have attended, all rolled into a package that works weeks, months, years to bring the fandom their fic. Yes we write for ourselves but we also write to contribute to fandom - just like artists do.

We’re just the same - artists and authors - and we deserve the same respect for our work.

Fanfiction authors are the heroes of any fandom ♡ Think about it! These people write short stories or ENTIRE NOVELS, because they want too. They don’t paid for this. But they put in an incredible amount of work into their stories because they love the characters as much (if not more) then we do, and do a fantastic job of bringing said characters to life through their words. I want to take this opportunity to tag some of the amazing writers I know of on tumblr and admire, because you’re all really appreciated and we love you. X3 @imthepunchlord @thelastpilot @midnightstarlightwrites @kryallaorchid @wintermoth There are so many other brilliant authors out there too. I probably don’t know you on tumblr (as I’m relatively new, still trying to find you all!) But you’re still loved. :D Thank you for being Heroes~

SEASON 2 HYPE! No spoilers please! I’ve almost finished but I need time for the last few episodes x3

I love Voltron’s art style. It’s so comfortable  and feels a lot like my own~! I usually actually find fanart difficult to draw?  I feel like I have to change how I draw to make it look right. >.>

Anyone else get that?

How To Prevent People From Pinning from Your Website ( i.e. Hamper Art Theft)

Hello guys! This is my first How-To post, so please bear with me! Warning: Long Post ahead!

Now I know many if not most of you consider Pinterest a headache when it comes to copyright infringement, especially for artists out there who have had SO many cases of art theft and have since given up on Pinterest.

Well, did you know there is a way to stop people from pinning from your sites directly

(Please bear in mind this does not work from the dashboard).

I took the liberty of reporting some of my art found on Pinterest. Within 24 hours, I got results and those were all taken down. However, a day or so later I checked again and they were all back up. That means someone had pinned them again despite my request to have those images taken down.

As you can see, simply searching your username will already bring up all these pieces of art from you. Here’s one reason why.

image

You see this? This is found on the Chrome Toolbar if installed. That is the Pinterest extension that once clicked, immediately leads to this window.

Here, pretty much any piece of media the person has posted or reblogged is available for pinning. They can click on the URL of the post and the same thing will appear. This is one reason why it is SO easy for people to pin our images on Pinterest which basically creates another copy instead of leading straight back to our site.

Well, I did some research and it turns out there is a way to prevent this.

If you click on THIS LINK, it will lead you to the Pinterest help desk where it provides a piece of code that you can paste to the HTML of your site to prevent people from accessing the window I just showed and essentially preventing them from pinning images right from your site.

Here is the code:

<meta name=“pinterest” content=“nopin” /> or

<meta name = “pinterest” content = “nopin” description = “insert dialogue here!”/>

(EDIT: Make sure your quotation marks are directionless when you post the code.)

Next, you paste this code into the <head> section of your website.

As you can see, you can also add a description that will show a dialogue. Once you have this saved, anyone who tries to pin right from your website will get this dialogue box instead.

The Help Desk also provides a code to use for a single image (though I haven’t figured out how this works yet so if anyone else can add, be my guest!)

<img src = “foo.jpg” nopin = “nopin” />

No more Pinterest window that leads to pinning. No more pinning right from your site! Isn’t that amazing? :D

HOWEVER. Please bear in mind these next few notes:

1) They can still pin your art if they’re taking it from someone who had reblogged it from you and does not have that code on their website.

So I highly recommend SUPPORTERS AGAINST ART THEFT to have this code on your Tumblr blogs as well.

2) As mentioned earlier, this does not work from the Tumblr dashboard, most likely because this is the Tumblr code now and we have no permission to edit its interface.

3) This does not completely nip art theft in the bud but it sure should prevent some of it from happening.

4) I have no idea how this could work from mobile. So if anyone would like to add regarding this, please PLEASE let me know.

5) You can report your art on Pinterest in bulk, limit is 100 pins per copyright report. I tried it. It’s so time-consuming though.

6). It only works if they are attempting to pin directly from your site. If they saved and re-uploaded your image, you will have to report and have those taken down manually.

Please spread this around especially to artists who are frustrated with Pinterest potentially allowing copyright infringement.

EDIT: It seems like this does not prevent people from using the Find A Website feature on the Pinterest homepage :(

THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Thank you! I went and did the exact same thing as soon as I saw this!

If any of you are against art theft, please do this too!

It does not solve the problem entirely, but it will definitely help, and artists need all the help they can get.

So many artists are struggling with art theft, and its devastating.

PLEASE SUPPORT THEM.
