Montreal is beautiful in May. Winter has finally released the city from its clutches after lingering for a month or two longer than you think it should be allowed to in your opinion. Leaves return to trees, flowers blossom, honey bees buzz about like they’ve got nothing better to do than get pollen drunk in the midafternoon. Perhaps your favorite, though, are the smattering of cherry blossom trees that bloom in the early weeks of May. 

Josh knows this, and so it’s not really a surprise when he suggests visiting the Montreal Botanical Garden tucked right in the heart of the city. The small picnic basket he tucks in the backseat of his car is a bit of a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. The drive from your apartment is quick, full of uncharacteristic silence. Josh isn’t the most talkative of guys, more of the silent, brooding type that you’ve been a goner for since as long as you can remember, but it’s still strange the way his smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes, or the way his left hand shakes ever so slightly against the steering wheel. You try not to dwell on it, focusing on the blurring landscape of the city you were just beginning to feel at home in.
