“You told me I could ask you anything.”
“And you would be honest.”
“What’s your favorite color?” He raises an amused eyebrow.
“Would have pegged you for a country boy.”
“Wouldn’t have thought you cared about my music preference.”
“I don’t. Favorite food?”
“Pizza. I know. You’re establishing a baseline for me telling the truth.”
“Smarter than he looks. Little known fact about yourself?”
“I can sing and play the guitar. Gave you two. Feeling generous today.”
“Where did you learn to shoot a bow?”
“Interesting. Do you think I’m pretty?”
“Do you want to sleep with me?”
“No.” Everything indicates he’s telling the truth, but he can’t be. She leans forward as if she’s going to kiss him, so close she see the flecks of gold in his grey eyes, but she doesn’t blink. Neither does he. After a moment she sits back.
“You didn’t try anything.”
“No. Are there more questions?”
“How many people have you killed?”
“Too many to keep count of.”
“Worst kill?” She doesn’t miss the way he swallows and it turns her stomach.
“Tell me.” He’s quiet for a long time, sipping on the coffee she’s sure is cold by now. Calloused fingers drum on the side of the cup.
“Her dad was the target. Smugglers ring. I wasn’t with Shield at the time. I was working for the highest bidder. It was a clean shot. Close range. He deserved it. But then this little girl ran out from behind the car, I didn’t even realize she was there. I turned to leave and a voice came over the comm.”
“Leave no witnesses,” he echoes.
“I promised you I wouldn’t.”
“I’d be surprised if you didn’t.”
“I won’t tell you everything.”
“You don’t have to.” She nods towards her empty mug.
“When people ask me I tell them I drink black coffee. I don’t. I put way too much cream and sugar in it.” He smiles warmly.
“I like to read. And.. I like plants a lot, but I never really stayed long enough in one place to keep one. There. I gave you two. I’m also feeling generous today.”
“If I come back tomorrow can we talk again?“
“Bring me cream and sugar for my coffee.”
“Then I’ll see you tomorrow.”
